To switch prerecorded videos automatically during a 24/7 YouTube stream, use a playout system to schedule and transition between files, then send its continuous output to YouTube through an encoder. YouTube Live handles the incoming stream; its auto-start and auto-stop settings do not select or switch video files. The exact playlist and transition controls depend on the playout software or hosted service you choose.
How automatic video switching works
The setup has two jobs:
- Playout: Stores or accesses your videos, decides what plays next, and switches between files.
- Encoding and ingest: Sends the resulting continuous audio-and-video feed to YouTube Live using the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
You can run playout and encoding locally, use a hosted service for continuous prerecorded-video streaming, or combine local and hosted components. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains how an encoder sends a feed; it does not provide a universal playlist-switching workflow. YouTube lists Gyre in its verified-encoder directory as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos. Check the service’s current documentation for its scheduling, transitions, recovery, and storage controls before choosing it.
Set up automatic switching with a local playout system
1. Choose and configure your playout method
Select a local playout application or dedicated system that can create a continuous output from your files and advance through a playlist automatically. Confirm that it supports the schedule, ordering, repeat behavior, and transitions you need. The particular controls vary by product; YouTube’s instructions do not specify buttons or settings for switching local files.
If you use a separate hardware encoder, verify the specific model supports unattended operation and the desired input or source switching. YouTube’s general encoder guidance establishes that standalone hardware encoders can send a feed, but does not certify a particular model as a video playlist system. A separate playout computer or service may still be required.

2. Enable live streaming and create a stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Enable live streaming on the channel if it has not been enabled, then create or select the stream you plan to use.
- Allow for activation time: YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours.
3. Connect the encoder to YouTube
Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the Live Control Room into your encoder’s connection settings. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s address and password, so treat it as a credential: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send a feed to your stream. Use the encoder’s own documentation for the exact field names and save or apply the settings there.
4. Test the complete playlist and feed
- Start a test feed and check the Live Control Room preview before relying on unattended playback.
- Confirm that the encoder remains connected when the playout system advances to the next video, and check that both audio and video continue as intended.
- Check that viewers can reach the event from the channel and watch pages, including on a mobile device.
- Monitor stream quality. If you have a backup encoder, test its failover rather than assuming it will take over correctly.
5. Keep your own archive
Do not assume YouTube will retain a complete archive of a 24/7 broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording or other archive backup if you need the full program.

Choose where the switching should run

YouTube’s documentation does not compare these approaches or establish current service pricing. For a hardware encoder, check the manufacturer’s documentation for that exact model; a generic encoder listing is not proof that it can schedule or switch files.
Copyright and channel considerations
Before scheduling a video, make sure you have the rights needed to livestream its picture, music, and other included material. A video being prerecorded or already uploaded does not by itself establish that you may rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright requirements in YouTube Studio and use the copyright safety checklist as a preparation aid. Separately, check YouTube’s current monetization policies if earning from the channel is part of your plan; copyright permission and eligibility for monetization are distinct questions.
