How to Switch to Wireless Android Auto When Your Cable Keeps Disconnecting

A cable that keeps disconnecting may be replaceable. Learn how to troubleshoot wired Android Auto, check wireless compatibility and pair your phone while parked.

Wireless Android Auto removes the repeated USB plug-in, so it can be more convenient when a cable keeps coming loose. It is not automatically more reliable: your phone and car must both support wireless Android Auto, and an adapter only helps if the car’s wired Android Auto connection already works. If the connection used to work and recently stopped, check the cable and car’s USB port before switching.

First check whether the cable or the car is the problem

A USB port in the dashboard does not by itself mean the car supports Android Auto. Google says the vehicle must be Android Auto compatible or use a compatible aftermarket receiver; confirm support for your exact car or stereo with its manufacturer. Google’s connection troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking that you are using the USB port intended for Android Auto.

If Android Auto worked before but now disconnects, start with the simplest likely cause: the cable or its fit. Google notes that not every USB cable works with every car and recommends a high-quality cable under 1 metre (3 feet). Connect directly, without a hub or extension. A replacement cable may resolve a connection that used to work, but it cannot fix a loose vehicle port, incompatible receiver or other hardware problem.

  1. Check that the cable fits securely at both ends and that you are using the car’s Android Auto-enabled USB port.
  2. Try a high-quality data cable under 1 metre, with connectors that fit your phone and car. Do not use a USB hub or extension.
  3. If the connection still fails, check that Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment system, then restart the system.
  4. For an aftermarket receiver, check with its manufacturer for a firmware update. If the issue persists, follow Google’s troubleshooting steps or contact the vehicle manufacturer.

What wireless Android Auto changes—and what it does not

With native wireless Android Auto, the phone connects without a recurring USB cable connection. That removes cable handling and the cable itself as a source of interruptions. It does not prove that wireless will be more stable in every car, nor does it resolve a faulty infotainment system. Google’s guidance and the manufacturers’ product information cited here do not establish a universal advantage for connection reliability, speed, sound quality or battery use.

Wireless may suit you if you want to get in and connect without plugging in each trip. Wired may suit you better if you prefer to charge through the car’s USB connection or your setup is already stable. Decide based on your phone and car’s compatibility, how the connection behaves in your own vehicle, and whether you want to plug in to charge.

Check wireless compatibility before changing your setup

Google lists a compatible Android phone, an active data plan, 5 GHz Wi-Fi support and a compatible car or stereo among the requirements for wireless Android Auto. Eligibility details can depend on the phone and may change, so check Google’s current requirements for your specific device and confirm wireless support for your exact car or receiver with its manufacturer.

There are two routes to wireless: a car or stereo with native wireless Android Auto, or an adapter for a vehicle that supports wired Android Auto but not native wireless. The latter is not a universal repair: the existing wired Android Auto system and USB port need to work, and compatibility varies by vehicle. Check the adapter maker’s compatibility information before buying. Motorola and AAWireless describe this use case in their support materials: Motorola MA1 support and the AAWireless FAQ.

Set up a wireless connection while parked

  1. Confirm that both the phone and the car or stereo support wireless Android Auto, and that the phone has mobile-data coverage.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services on the phone. Leave them on during setup.
  3. With the car parked and its infotainment system on, pair the phone and car over Bluetooth. Google’s setup guidance says, “The first time you connect wirelessly, you will need to pair your phone and car via Bluetooth.”
  4. Follow any prompts on the phone or car screen. Android Auto should start a few seconds after pairing, though you may need to accept prompts. See Google’s setup instructions.

If your car lacks native wireless support, first make sure wired Android Auto starts and remains connected. Only then consider a compatible wireless adapter; it uses the car’s existing Android Auto-capable USB system and will not repair a bad port or faulty head unit.
