You can replace an old Fitbit without losing health history that has already synced to your account. The key is to use the same Google Account that currently shows your Fitbit data, sync the old tracker before switching, and set up the new tracker in the Google Health app. Exporting a backup is optional for a normal same-account replacement; erasing the old tracker before handing it off is a separate step.
How to switch trackers and keep your history
- Confirm which account holds your history. Open the Google Health app and check that your existing Fitbit history appears under the Google Account you plan to use. Do not create or choose a different account for the new tracker if your history is under another one. Google’s current account requirements say people who used an original Fitbit account need to move to a Google Account to access Google Health. If you cannot sign in or cannot find your history, contact Google support before setting up the replacement under another account.
- Sync the old Fitbit. Keep the tracker near your phone, open the Google Health app, and allow it to sync. Google says data syncs automatically throughout the day and when you open the app with the device nearby. To try a manual sync, go to Connections > Sync. The sync instructions also say multiple Fitbit devices can sync to one account.
- Decide whether to export a backup. Exporting is not required to use a replacement tracker with the same account. If you want a separate copy, Google Account users can use Google’s data download flow and select Google Health. Google’s export help also describes downloads for original Fitbit logins; large archives can take a few days to prepare. If you cannot access the account, resolve that first rather than relying on an export as a substitute for account access.
- Check phone and model compatibility. The Google Health app currently requires Android 11 or later, or iOS 16.4 or later. Google notes that some phones listed as compatible can still have issues. Check compatibility for your exact phone and tracker model before buying or setting up a replacement.
- Set up the new tracker in Google Health. Follow the app’s setup flow for the specific model and use the same Google Account. The exact screens vary by model, so follow the instructions shown in the app rather than assuming every Fitbit uses the same pairing steps.
- Verify that both history and syncing are present. Check that your past summaries are visible, then open Connections and confirm the new tracker has a recent sync status. If history is missing, first check the signed-in account; if the new tracker has not synced, keep it nearby and retry the app’s sync option.
- Reconnect partner apps if they need attention. If a third-party app or service used Fitbit data, check Connections > Partner Apps for a “Needs Action” notice and follow that service’s reconnect process. Google says Fitbit Web APIs will no longer be supported starting October 30, 2026; this change does not delete historical data already synced to Google Health, but future data transfer depends on the partner’s integration.
- Erase the old tracker before giving it away. Use the erase or factory-reset instructions for that exact model before selling, donating, or recycling it. Account deletion and erasing a device are different actions; deleting the account does not automatically clear data stored locally on the tracker.
Replacing a tracker is different from migrating an old Fitbit login
A device replacement and an account migration are related but separate tasks. If your existing history already appears in Google Health, the usual replacement path is to keep that account and add the new tracker. If you still use an original Fitbit login, account access must be addressed as well.

| Transition | Account access | What to do about history | Export | Partner apps |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Replace a tracker while using the same Google Account | Use the Google Account that already displays your Fitbit history. | Sync the old tracker, then set up the new one in Google Health under that account. | Optional backup; not required for the normal replacement. | Check for “Needs Action” if you depend on a connected service. |
| Move from an original Fitbit login to a Google Account | Google’s current help says original Fitbit-account users need to move to a Google Account to access Google Health. Access may require support if you cannot sign in. | Follow the account migration and access steps; do not treat setting up a new tracker as a substitute for migration. | Google’s help documents data downloads, but an export does not itself move history into another account. | Review connections after you regain access; requirements depend on each partner service. |
Google announced Fitbit account migration on April 11, 2023, saying users would retain access to historical health and wellness data after moving to a Google Account. Its current help page now says Fitbit-account users needed to move by May 19, 2026 to access Google Health, and that data could be downloaded or deleted before deletion processing began July 15, 2026. Those dates have passed. If you are affected and cannot access your history, contact current Google support rather than relying on an old Fitbit-login path.

No. Your synced history is associated with the account, not held only on the old tracker, so buying a replacement is not necessary to preserve data already synced. If the old device still works, you can keep using it. If you do replace it, compare the new model’s phone support, tracking features and form factor, and check charger and band compatibility for that model. Google’s current device list includes models such as Charge 6; it does not establish that every model or accessory works with every phone or older Fitbit accessory.
