How to Switch Podcast Episodes Automatically on a YouTube Live Stream in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To play prerecorded podcast episodes one after another on a YouTube live stream, put the files in an OBS Studio VLC Video source playlist, arrange them in order, and leave shuffle off. Enable looping only if the sequence should repeat. Then connect OBS to a YouTube live event using the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. This handles episode playback; changing the on-screen layout for each episode requires a separate scene-switching setup.

Choose what should switch automatically

“Switch episodes” can mean advancing between audio-video files, changing the visual layout, or both. These are separate tasks:

  • Advance between recordings with the same layout: use one ordered playlist in an OBS VLC Video source.
  • Change title cards, guest graphics, or layouts per episode: prepare separate OBS scenes or sources and add an automation method that can trigger a scene change when a file ends. OBS documents scenes and transitions, but the official materials cited here do not provide a complete, version-specific recipe for end-of-file switching.
  • Repeat the sequence: enable playlist looping and check the transition from the final file back to the first.
  • Begin at a chosen time: schedule the YouTube live event separately from preparing the encoder’s episode sequence. Scheduling the event does not create or run the playlist.

Set up automatic episode playback in OBS

  1. Prepare the episode files. Keep local copies of the recordings you want to play. Decide whether they should run once, repeat, or play in a shuffled order. For a deliberate episode sequence, use the intended order and leave shuffle off.
  2. Install VLC if needed. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. Match the VLC build to OBS: OBS notes that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. If the VLC source is missing from OBS, check that VLC is installed with the matching architecture, then reopen OBS.
  3. Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will show the episodes. Add the files to its playlist and arrange them in playback order. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes playlist playback, loop, and shuffle controls: OBS Media Sources.
  4. Set playback behavior. Turn on looping only when you want the playlist to restart after its last file. Keep shuffle off for a fixed sequence. Review the source’s visibility and playback settings so the media behaves as intended when the scene is active.
  5. Check the scene composition. A single playlist source is usually the simpler arrangement when the same picture or layout stays on screen. If the visuals must change with each episode, build the required scenes and transitions separately; verify that your chosen automation method supports the end-of-file trigger in your installed version before relying on it.
  6. Test the complete run. Preview the sequence, including the end of the final file, the start of the next episode or loop, audio continuity, and any scene changes. YouTube allows live-event visibility options such as private or unlisted, which can be useful for a rehearsal before a public event.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or schedule one in Live Control Room.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish or share it.
  3. Start the encoder output in OBS. Follow the Go Live step shown in Live Control Room for the workflow you selected; a scheduled event and an encoder sending video are distinct parts of the setup.

YouTube’s encoder instructions cover creating or scheduling a live stream and entering the stream URL and key in an encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. YouTube’s encoder overview describes software and hardware encoder categories: YouTube encoder setup.

Episode playlists are not YouTube HLS playlists

OBS’s VLC playlist is your list of podcast episode files. An HLS playlist is part of the video-transport method used to send segments to YouTube; it does not choose which episode plays next. YouTube’s HLS setup specifies 1–4 second segment duration, Transport Stream format, HTTPS transfer, and no more than five outstanding segments. These are ingestion requirements, not episode-scheduling controls. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.

What to know about using this workflow in India

The YouTube and OBS documentation cited here describes a general workflow, not an India-specific eligibility or availability guarantee. It does not establish local account requirements, network reliability, or latency. The documented steps are to build the sequence in the encoder and connect that encoder to the YouTube live event.

Troubleshooting

  • VLC Video is not available as a source: install VLC and confirm its architecture matches OBS (for example, 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS), then reopen OBS.
  • Episodes play in the wrong order: review the file order in the VLC Video playlist and make sure shuffle is off.
  • The playlist stops after the last episode: enable looping if you want it to restart. If it should play once, stopping at the end is expected.
  • The live event is scheduled but shows no program: scheduling does not produce the video feed. Check that OBS is sending output and that its stream URL and key match the YouTube event.
  • The picture changes but the episode does not, or vice versa: playlist playback and scene switching are distinct. Check the VLC playlist for episode order, and separately verify the scene automation trigger and transition setup.
  • A stream connection or playback fails during a run: check the OBS output, YouTube Live Control Room status, local source playback, and network connection. The cited materials do not establish a guaranteed unattended procedure, so test the full sequence before relying on it.
