How to Switch OBS Scenes Between Product Demos on YouTube Live

Set up separate OBS scenes for product demos and switch with hotkeys, Studio Mode, or window focus. The documented window switcher is not a timed loop.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To switch between product demos in OBS, create a scene for each demo, then change scenes with hotkeys or OBS Studio Mode as you present. If each demo runs in its own application window, OBS’s Automatic Scene Switcher can change scenes when you focus the associated window. That is window-triggered switching—not a timed scene loop. The documented OBS workflow does not establish automatic rotation at set intervals.

Choose the switching method that fits your demo

Method What triggers the switch Best fit Important limit
Scene hotkeys You press the assigned keyboard shortcut. Live narration where you decide when each demo appears. Requires an operator to advance scenes.
Studio Mode You prepare a scene in preview, then apply a transition to the live output. Presentations where you want to check the next scene before putting it on air. Requires an operator to transition.
Automatic Scene Switcher The configured application window becomes active. Demos kept in separate application windows. The documented OBS example is based on window focus; it does not establish timed rotation.

OBS’s overview documents scene hotkeys, Studio Mode, and transitions. Its OBS 31.1+ League of Legends guide demonstrates configuring scenes for relevant windows and switching when a configured window is focused. That example is useful for window-based demos, but it is not evidence that OBS will cycle through scenes on a schedule.

Build one OBS scene for each product demo

  1. Create the scenes: In OBS, add a scene for each demo and give it a name you can recognize quickly, such as “Demo – Setup” or “Demo – Checkout.”
  2. Add the right sources: For each scene, add the source or sources that show the demo. OBS supports inputs such as application or game capture, display capture, browser content, images, and audio. Use the capture type that matches how the demo is presented.
  3. Check the scene composition: Confirm that the relevant content is visible and that any needed audio source is included. Keep the scene names distinct so you can identify them during the broadcast.
  4. Decide how to advance: Assign a separate hotkey to each scene if you want direct keyboard control, or use Studio Mode to prepare the next scene and transition it to the live output.

For a narrated presentation, hotkeys give you direct control over when a demo changes. Studio Mode adds a preview/edit scene alongside the live scene, letting you prepare the next view before transitioning. OBS’s overview documents both options and its available transitions.

Switch scenes automatically when demo windows change

If each product demo is open in its own application window, the built-in Automatic Scene Switcher may suit your setup. The documented OBS 31.1+ example uses the Tools menu to configure Automatic Scene Switcher, associate scenes with windows, and activate the switcher. When a configured window is focused, OBS switches to its associated scene.

  1. Make a separate OBS scene for each application window you intend to show.
  2. Open Tools and configure Automatic Scene Switcher for those scenes and their matching windows.
  3. Activate the switcher, then focus a configured application window to trigger its scene.

Window focus can be convenient when you move among separate demo applications, but it is not a scheduled carousel: the source documentation demonstrates switching in response to the active window, not advancing every set number of seconds. If your requirement is a hands-free timed rotation, verify that a current OBS feature or maintained plugin supports that exact behavior before relying on it; the documented workflow here does not establish it.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Create or schedule an encoder stream: In YouTube Studio, create a live stream for an encoder. Scheduling lets you promote the stream and offer reminders.
  2. Copy the connection details: Get the YouTube Live server URL and stream key from the stream setup.
  3. Enter them in OBS: In OBS’s stream settings, select the relevant service and enter the server URL and stream key. YouTube’s instructions state: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
  4. Start the encoder and check the preview: Start streaming from OBS, then wait for the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Check that the correct scene, picture, and audio are reaching YouTube before you go live.

YouTube recommends setting up the encoder in advance, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video quality during the broadcast. An unlisted test stream is useful for rehearsing scene changes and checking the picture before a public presentation.

Plan a YouTube Live loop realistically

A sequence of OBS scenes controlled by hotkeys or window focus can present demos in order, but the switching methods above do not by themselves create an unattended timed loop. If you need demos to rotate at fixed intervals without an operator, confirm the current behavior of any additional OBS feature or plugin you plan to use; do not treat manual switching or window-focus switching as scheduled playback.

YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is a YouTube workflow detail, not a guarantee that a long-running loop will remain live indefinitely. For a long session, plan to monitor the broadcast and check the current YouTube and OBS behavior that applies to your setup.

Troubleshoot common scene-switching problems

  • A hotkey does not switch scenes: Check that the shortcut is assigned to the intended scene and that another application or OBS action is not intercepting it. Test the shortcut before the live event.
  • Studio Mode shows the new scene only in preview: That is expected until you apply a transition. Use the transition control to put the prepared scene on the live output.
  • Automatic switching selects the wrong scene or does not switch: Confirm that the intended application window is associated with the right scene in Automatic Scene Switcher, that the switcher is active, and that the matching window is actually focused.
  • You expected scenes to advance on a timer: The documented Automatic Scene Switcher example is triggered by window focus. It does not establish timed rotation. Verify a separate current feature or plugin for scheduled switching before using it.
  • YouTube has no usable preview: Check the OBS stream URL and key against the details for the intended YouTube stream, confirm OBS is sending, and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Do not go live until the preview shows the expected scene.
  • Viewers report missing audio or a poor picture: Check the relevant OBS sources and the YouTube preview, then monitor the live output as YouTube advises.
