If a Roku streaming player is connected to a TV from another brand, use that TV’s remote: press Input or Source, then select the HDMI port the Roku uses.
First, identify which setup you have
The steps depend on whether Roku is built into your television or you have a separate Roku player connected to a TV. A Roku TV lists HDMI devices on its Home screen. With an external Roku player and a non-Roku TV, the television—not the Roku player—selects the HDMI port that displays it.

Change HDMI input on a Roku TV
- Turn on the Roku TV and the HDMI-connected device you want to use.
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- On the Home screen, select the tile for the port the device is connected to, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
- To return to Roku streaming, press Home.
If you are connecting a device for the first time, connect it to the TV, turn it on, and follow any on-screen setup prompts. Roku says you can add or change connected devices later under Settings > Remotes & Devices > Add Devices. Menu labels can vary by TV model and software version. Roku’s guide to connecting devices to a Roku TV covers the setup.

Switch to a Roku player on another brand of TV
- Check which HDMI socket the Roku player is plugged into. The port may be labeled on the TV, for example, HDMI 1.
- Use the television’s remote and press Input, Source, or a similar button.
- Select the HDMI number that matches the Roku player’s connection, then give the TV a moment to detect its signal. Roku’s setup guidance says to wait about 10 seconds.
The Roku remote generally does not select the active HDMI input on a non-Roku television. If the Roku screen is missing, Roku advises using the TV remote and pressing the button labeled Input, Source, or Video. Roku’s black-screen troubleshooting guide includes this check.

Can a Roku player switch other HDMI devices?
Roku players have an optional TV Inputs feature for switching among connected devices. This is different from using a non-Roku TV’s own input control to display the Roku player.
- On the Roku player, go to Home > TV Inputs.
- The first time, choose Find inputs, then select the device tile you want.
- If you have a compatible voice remote, you can also hold its microphone button and ask to switch to a named input.
For a Roku TV, the TV and Roku player need to be on the same network, and the TV software should be up to date. With another TV brand, HDMI-CEC must be enabled; the manufacturer may use a name such as Anynet+, Bravia Sync, or Simplink. See Roku’s guide to switching TV inputs for setup details. Some Roku TV switching errors may also involve Settings > System > Control other devices (CEC) > 1-Touch Play.

Fix a missing HDMI input or “no signal” message
The Roku screen is not visible
- Use the TV remote to cycle through its inputs and select the HDMI port where the Roku player is connected.
- Confirm the Roku player is powered on and the HDMI cable is firmly connected at both ends.
- If there is still no picture, try another HDMI port and reconnect the cables. If the player reports low power, check its power connection and use the supplied power adapter.
See Roku’s black-screen troubleshooting steps for additional checks.
The Roku player cannot find a connected device
- Turn on the device you want to use.
- Check HDMI-CEC settings on the TV and connected device, if available.
- Reconnect the HDMI cable securely and try another HDMI port.
- If the connection still appears faulty, try another cable. Roku recommends the supplied cable where possible; its guidance calls for a High Speed HDMI cable for TVs limited to 720p or 1080p, and a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for TVs supporting 4K/HDR.
Those cable categories are troubleshooting guidance, not a reason to replace a cable when the existing one works. More checks are listed in Roku’s input-switching guide and black-screen guide.

Check that HDMI connections are secure, test another HDMI input, and install available TV firmware updates. If the behavior continues, review the TV’s HDMI-CEC or one-touch-play settings; those features can affect input switching.
