Start the number transfer with the carrier you’re joining—not T-Mobile. Before you submit the request, get the T-Mobile account details, generate the right transfer PIN for your account type, and turn off Port Out Protection on the line if it’s enabled. T-Mobile calls this process transferring your number to another carrier, or “porting out.”
Before you start, check the new carrier’s requirements
Contact the carrier you plan to join and ask how to submit a port-in request, what account details and PIN it requires, and whether your number is eligible. Requirements can differ by carrier, and T-Mobile’s instructions do not establish that every number can move to every destination.

Keep your T-Mobile service active while the new carrier processes the request. If the transfer stalls, contact the new carrier about the request and T-Mobile about any account or PIN issue. T-Mobile’s instructions do not give a verified completion-time estimate for a transfer from T-Mobile to another carrier.

What to gather from your T-Mobile account
- T-Mobile account number: Find it in your T-Mobile account or on a bill.
- Temporary Port Out PIN: Personal-account customers need this PIN. The primary account holder must generate it.
- Account PIN or passcode: T-Mobile lists this among the details the receiving provider may request. Confirm the destination carrier’s exact requirements.
How to port out a personal T-Mobile number
- Ask the new carrier to start the transfer. Confirm its port-in process and the information it needs before submitting the request.
- Find your T-Mobile account number. Check your account or bill, and make sure you have the account PIN or passcode if the destination carrier requests it.
- Have the primary account holder generate a Temporary Port Out PIN. T-Mobile says this can be requested through T-Life or T-Mobile.com. Its instructions may require using the T-Mobile device on T-Mobile’s network with Wi-Fi turned off.
- Check Port Out Protection for the line. If it is enabled, turn it off before using the temporary PIN. On postpaid accounts, the primary account holder must remove the protection.
- Submit the port request to the new carrier. Enter the details it requests carefully. Incorrect account information can require validation or correction.
- Follow up if the port does not progress. Ask the new carrier to check the submission and contact T-Mobile for help with transfer-PIN issues.
T-Mobile’s Transfer your phone number support page has the current account steps and app labels; check it before requesting the PIN because those details may change.

Prepaid, business, and government accounts
Prepaid
Prepaid customers have a separate “Request Transfer PIN” flow in their account profile. Turn off Port Out Protection first if it is active. If you need help with the prepaid account route, contact T-Mobile.
Business and government
Do not assume the personal-account steps or permissions apply. T-Mobile provides separate guidance for business transfers, and government-account customers must contact T-Mobile to get started.

Why Port Out Protection matters
T-Mobile describes Port Out Protection as a feature that blocks unauthorized transfers. If it is active on the line, the temporary PIN cannot be used until the protection is removed. The FCC has also discussed authentication methods and the accessibility limits of requiring app-based one-time PINs in its 2023 order on port-out fraud protections.
How long does a T-Mobile number transfer take?
T-Mobile’s published estimates of 10 minutes to 3 hours for wireless transfers and 3–10 days for landline transfers apply to transfers into T-Mobile. They are not estimates for moving a number from T-Mobile to another carrier. Ask the receiving carrier for its current timing guidance; the available T-Mobile instructions do not establish a universal outbound completion time.
