What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You cannot move every part of ChatGPT to another assistant with one click. The reliable approach is a staged handoff: export the account archive, create a separate profile of durable preferences and project context, import each item through the destination’s supported route, then test your real work before changing subscriptions.
What actually moves when you switch assistants?
“ChatGPT history and memory” are not one file. Treat the information you want to keep as separate assets, because each destination handles them differently.

| Asset | What it contains | Best handoff method |
|---|---|---|
| Conversation history | Past prompts, responses and conversation metadata | ChatGPT data export, followed by a destination-specific archive import or reference upload |
| Memory and response preferences | Writing style, recurring preferences, durable facts and standing instructions | A reviewed, plain-text profile pasted into the new assistant’s memory feature or an initial setup conversation |
| Project instructions and decisions | Goals, constraints, definitions, status and open decisions for active work | A project brief plus any destination project feature |
| Uploaded files | Documents, spreadsheets, images, code and other source material | Keep a separate copy and upload required files manually unless the destination explicitly supports them |
| Generated images and files | Outputs created inside the old assistant | Download and organize them separately; they are not guaranteed to be included in an import |
An export is therefore an archive, not a universal restore point. A destination may import text while excluding project files, generated media or account settings. Plan for a combination of automated import and selective rebuilding.
Make an inventory before you request the export
Do this while you can still sign in to the old account. An inventory prevents the common failure mode of discovering, after cancellation, that an important instruction or file existed only in one chat.
#1 Best Overall
List durable preferences
- Preferred answer length, tone, formatting and level of explanation.
- Spelling, language, date, measurement and code-style conventions.
- Topics the assistant should ask about before acting, and tasks it should never perform without confirmation.
- Facts you deliberately want retained, such as your role, audience, recurring tools or accessibility needs.
List active work
- Each ongoing project’s objective, current status, deadline and next action.
- Decisions already made and the reasons behind them.
- Definitions, naming conventions, system architecture and other context that would be expensive to reconstruct.
- Recurring workflows, prompts, checklists and templates that you use repeatedly.
Mark hard-to-recreate conversations and files
Do not assume a keyword search later will find everything. Record conversation titles or dates, then download source files and generated outputs into folders you control. Keep the original filenames where they help identify a project, and add a short note describing how each file was used.
Export your ChatGPT data while you still have access
For a personal signed-in account, OpenAI documents this path:
- Open the profile menu in ChatGPT.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Select Export data.
- Choose Export, then confirm the request.
OpenAI says the archive is delivered by email or SMS and can take up to seven days. The download link expires 24 hours after delivery, and you must be signed in to the account that requested it when opening the link. Start the request before your planned move rather than on the day you cancel.
Secure the downloaded ZIP
The ZIP can contain chat history and other account data, including sensitive information. Download it to a device or encrypted storage location you trust, restrict access, and avoid uploading it to an unfamiliar conversion service. Make at least one backup copy before you begin importing or reorganizing files.
Deleted conversations cannot be restored by requesting an export. If a conversation matters, confirm that it is present in the archive and preserve any associated files separately.
Create a portable profile instead of relying on the archive
A destination can often use a concise profile more reliably than thousands of old conversations. Ask ChatGPT to draft a profile, then edit it yourself. The profile should describe only information you want another provider to receive.
Use a prompt such as:
Create a migration profile for another AI assistant. Organize it under these headings: my role and audience; response style and formatting preferences; durable facts I want remembered; recurring workflows; active projects with status, constraints and next actions; important decisions and definitions; tools and file conventions; and questions that remain open. Separate confirmed facts from assumptions. Do not include secrets, passwords, payment details, private third-party information or temporary chat details. Keep the result concise enough to review manually.
Review and redact the draft
- Delete credentials, API keys, health information, financial details and other secrets.
- Remove information about other people unless you have a clear reason and permission to share it.
- Correct guesses and stale project status; an assistant may present an inference as if it were a fact.
- Split unrelated projects into separate briefs so the new assistant does not mix contexts.
- Keep a dated copy of the final profile so you know what was transferred.
Memory import and archive import are separate operations. A profile captures what should persist; the ZIP preserves historical reference material. Use both when the destination supports both.

Gemini documents two distinct paths: paste a text summary to import memories, and upload a ZIP to import ChatGPT chat history. Treat the two operations independently.
Import the memory profile
Open Gemini’s memory or personalization settings and use the documented prompt-and-paste flow. Paste the reviewed profile, not the unedited export. Ask Gemini to show the memory entries it created, then correct or remove anything inaccurate.
Import the chat archive
In Gemini settings, choose the option for importing chat history and upload the ChatGPT ZIP. Google’s help guidance specifies a maximum ZIP size of 5 GB and up to five ZIP uploads per day. The import can take up to a day, so leave time for processing before you judge the result.
Imported conversations are handled separately from ordinary new chats, and the settings page controls how they are deleted. If you upload the same Gemini ZIP again, Google says the system adds new conversations and overwrites previously imported ones. Do not re-upload casually; keep one known-good archive and track which version you used.
Know what Gemini excludes
Google says project files cannot be imported, and generated images or files from the previous assistant do not transfer through the chat-history import. Chat text can transfer, but the files referenced by that text may still be absent. Upload essential documents and media separately, then reconnect them to the relevant project brief.
Import into Claude
Anthropic’s documented route is a text-based memory import. Provide the exported profile to Claude’s memory import flow and review the entries it produces.
Anthropic labels this feature experimental and warns that it may not retain every item. The documented focus is work-related information, so unrelated personal details may be omitted. Compare the resulting entries with your approved profile; do not assume that a successful import means the profile is complete.
Rank #3
The documented flow does not establish a full ChatGPT ZIP migration into Claude’s native conversation history. Keep the ZIP as an external archive and bring individual conversations or excerpts into Claude when a current task needs them.

Move to another ChatGPT account
OpenAI’s account-transfer guidance describes exporting conversations and uploading the file into a new conversation in the destination account as reference material. This does not merge the accounts and does not recreate the old archive in the new account’s chat history.
For a clean handoff, start a conversation in the new account with three items: your reviewed profile, a short index of important archived conversations, and the specific export file or excerpts needed for the current task. Ask the assistant to confirm what it can access before relying on it.
Use a manual route for any other assistant
When a service offers no documented importer, do not treat a raw ZIP as a universal format. Use a small, controlled set of files:
- Keep the original export untouched as your legal and historical archive.
- Create a plain-text profile for durable preferences and memory.
- Create one brief per active project with status, decisions, files and next actions.
- Copy only the conversations needed for current work, preferably as text or PDF reference files accepted by the destination.
- Upload files in batches and verify that the assistant can quote or summarize each one accurately.
This takes longer than a single upload but avoids giving a new provider an opaque archive it cannot parse or search.

Rebuild project materials and generated outputs
Projects are where migrations most often lose context. Preserve the material outside the assistant before you switch.
For documents and data
- Keep the original file and a readable export when possible.
- Record the file’s purpose, version date and the project conversations that used it.
- Upload only the files needed for a task if the destination has storage or context limits.
- After upload, ask the new assistant to list the files it can see and identify any missing pages, sheets or attachments.
For generated images and files
Download outputs directly from the old service and store them with the prompt, date and any usage notes. A conversation may mention an image or generated file without embedding a portable copy. Gemini’s documented exclusions make this especially important when moving there.

For instructions
Place project-specific rules in the project brief rather than burying them in a long transcript. Include acceptance criteria, prohibited changes, preferred tools and the exact definition of “done.”
Verify the new assistant before cancelling the old plan
Run a deliberate acceptance test instead of asking whether the migration “looks right.” Keep the old account available until these checks pass.

- Project check: Give it an active-project brief and ask for the current status, next action and unresolved decisions. Compare the answer with your source brief.
- Archive check: Search for several important conversations or open the reference files you supplied. Confirm that dates, names and key decisions are intact.
- File check: Ask the assistant to identify the files available to it and summarize a known section. Do not infer that an upload worked merely because the interface accepted it.
- Workflow check: Run representative daily tasks: drafting, coding, analysis, meeting preparation or whatever you actually do. Check formatting, terminology and instruction-following.
- Recovery check: Confirm how to delete imported chats or memory entries and how to remove a file if you uploaded the wrong version.
OpenAI’s account-transfer guidance also recommends reviewing active Plus or Pro subscriptions before deciding which account to keep. Confirm the destination’s billing, workspace access and required features before ending the old plan. Avoid deleting the old account as a routine step; retain it until the archive, imports, files and billing are all accounted for.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check account and workspace eligibility
Self-service ChatGPT exports are documented for signed-in Free, Go, Plus and Pro users. Business, Enterprise and Healthcare workspaces should route export requests to the workspace owner. Edu export availability can depend on administrator enablement.
Managed workspaces may impose their own retention, access and organization policies. A personal-account procedure may therefore fail or expose less data in a work account. Ask the owner or administrator which export and retention rules apply before copying workspace material to a personal destination.
Keep privacy controls straight
Three settings are easy to conflate:
- Saved chats: the conversations retained in the account and included in an export when available.
- Memory: durable information the assistant may use across conversations.
- Model-improvement controls: settings governing whether content is used to improve models.
Turning off model improvement does not delete saved chats, and changing memory controls does not erase an exported archive. Handle each setting separately, then apply the destination provider’s privacy and retention controls to the material you upload.
Do not send the ZIP to a third-party converter simply to make it easier to import. If conversion is unavoidable, understand that service’s storage, deletion and access terms first, and remove sensitive material when a smaller excerpt will do.

Troubleshoot common migration failures
The export email has not arrived
Allow the documented delivery window of up to seven days, check the account’s email and phone notifications, and verify that you requested the export from the account you still control. If the link arrives after 24 hours, request a new export rather than relying on an expired link.
The destination rejects the ZIP
Check the file size and the destination’s accepted format. Gemini’s documented limit is 5 GB per ZIP and five uploads per day. For a service without a ZIP importer, keep the archive intact and use a profile, project briefs and selected conversation files instead of repeatedly changing the original.
Memories are missing or wrong
Compare the destination’s memory entries with your approved profile. Add missing items explicitly, remove incorrect entries, and separate temporary instructions from durable preferences. Claude’s experimental import may omit items, so manual review is required.

That is expected where the destination imports text but excludes project files or generated media. Upload the source files separately, then update the project brief with their filenames and versions.
A duplicate import created confusion
Stop uploading the archive again. In Gemini, a repeated upload can add new conversations and overwrite previously imported ones. Identify the intended import, delete or organize duplicates using the destination’s controls, and maintain one local master archive.
The new assistant gives generic answers
Start with the profile and a focused project brief rather than an entire transcript. Ask the assistant to restate constraints before it works, attach the exact source files required, and preserve successful prompts as reusable workflow documents.
A migration pattern that remains maintainable
After the switch, keep four small, provider-neutral records outside any assistant:
- Profile: durable preferences and facts, reviewed whenever they change.
- Project briefs: one per active project, with status, decisions, files and next actions.
- Workflow library: tested prompts, checklists and templates.
- Archive index: dates, conversation names and locations for historical material.
Update these records during normal work instead of waiting for another migration. The assistant then becomes a replaceable tool: your context lives in organized documents, while each provider receives only what it can safely and accurately use.
