Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou will not lose your saved logins if you stage the change. Set up the password manager first, export or migrate credentials from the browser, import them, and test your important accounts and autofill on every device you use. Only then turn off the browser’s save prompts and remove its stored copies. Delete any temporary CSV immediately after verification because it contains readable passwords.
The safe order for switching
The handoff is easiest when you treat the browser as the source and the password manager as the destination. Disabling browser storage first can leave you with no convenient copy to import; deleting an export file too early can force you to repeat the process.

- Choose and install the destination manager. Add its browser extension or integration and mobile app where you sign in.
- Inventory the source. Open the browser’s saved-password area and note important accounts, duplicate usernames, and any logins stored on another device or browser.
- Export or migrate. Use the browser’s supported export, migration wizard, or CSV process.
- Import into the manager. Resolve rejected rows, duplicates, and entries whose site or app name landed in an unexpected field.
- Verify before cleanup. Test high-value accounts, multiple usernames for the same site, and autofill on desktop and mobile.
- Stop competing prompts. Turn off browser password saving and, where available, browser password autofill.
- Delete the export and retire old copies. Remove the CSV, then delete browser-stored credentials after the new manager has worked through a normal sign-in cycle.
This sequence preserves convenience while limiting the period in which two stores can diverge.

Choose a destination that can replace your browser
Do not select a manager solely because it imports a CSV. It needs to work in the places you actually sign in: your desktop operating systems, browsers, phones, tablets, and apps.

| Capability to check | Why it matters during the handoff | Questions to answer before importing |
|---|---|---|
| Browser and device coverage | A manager that works on a laptop but not your phone will push you back toward browser storage. | Are extensions or integrations available for every browser you use? Does mobile autofill work in your operating system? |
| Import formats | Export files differ in column names and handling of notes, identities, and duplicates. | Does it accept the browser’s CSV directly, or must you map fields first? |
| Duplicate handling | Several browser profiles or devices may contain the same account with different passwords. | Will the importer merge, skip, or create separate records? |
| App autofill | Many sign-ins happen in mobile or desktop apps rather than a browser tab. | Can the manager offer credentials in apps as well as websites? |
| Recovery and authentication | You need a way back into the vault if a device is lost or the master credential is forgotten. | What recovery options exist, and which additional authentication methods can you enable? |
| Passkey support | Passwords and passkeys are different credential types. | Does the manager support the passkeys you plan to use, and what separate enrollment steps are required? |
No single product is established as universally best by the documented migration guidance. Make the choice based on your device coverage, import behavior, autofill experience, and recovery plan.
Move saved passwords out of Chrome
Export a CSV from Google Password Manager
On a computer, open Chrome’s password-management area (the menu labels can change with updates; current Chrome places it under Passwords and autofill and Google Password Manager). Use the export command and save the resulting file only long enough to complete the import.
Google’s import instructions specify a .csv file whose first row uses the column names url, username, and password. Keep those headers exactly as required by the importer you are using; another manager may require a different template or a field-mapping step.
- Chrome documents a limit of 3,000 passwords per import.
- A Google Account can hold up to 10,000 passwords under the documented product limits.
- Those figures are service limits, not measurements of security, reliability, or typical user behavior.
If the browser has more entries than one import permits, split the work into smaller files according to the destination manager’s instructions. Do not create a larger file by editing headers or combining rows blindly.

Expect imperfect field placement
Google notes that some app or site names may not appear in the field you expect after import. Search the destination vault by domain, username, and the application name you remember. Open suspicious entries and move values into the correct login fields rather than assuming that an apparently empty record is missing.
Protect the exported file
A browser-exported CSV is readable text. Google warns that anyone who can use the device may be able to open an undeleted export. Do not email it, upload it to shared storage, leave it in a synced folder, or keep it on removable media as a casual backup. Import it, verify the result, and securely delete it from the computer and recycle/trash location.
Move credentials from Firefox
Use Firefox’s transfer or CSV tools
Firefox documents exporting logins to CSV and importing logins from another application or file. Open Firefox’s password manager (often labelled Passwords or Logins and Passwords), then use its menu to export or import. Because Mozilla changes menu wording and migration availability, follow the labels shown in your installed version.

Important Chrome-to-Firefox limitation from Firefox 140
Mozilla states that beginning with Firefox 140, automatic Chrome-password import is not available on Windows or Linux. On those platforms, use a CSV file through Firefox’s migration wizard. The restriction is version- and operating-system-specific; check the wizard on your machine rather than assuming that a one-click Chrome import will appear.
Even when automatic migration is offered on another platform or version, inspect the resulting records. Browser profiles can contain duplicates, obsolete passwords, and multiple usernames for one service.
Account for Microsoft Edge’s password-protection change
Microsoft’s guidance about Edge’s Custom Primary Password concerns protection of passwords stored in Edge. Microsoft says that feature is being retired for opted-in users, with device-based authentication replacing it after June 4, 2026. This changes how Edge protects its own vault; it does not change how a third-party manager imports credentials.
If Edge is your source browser, export or migrate its saved credentials using the controls available in your current release, then test the destination manager before deleting Edge entries. Do not interpret the primary-password retirement as an import method or as evidence that credentials have moved automatically.

Verify the new manager before disabling browser storage
Import completion is not proof that every login is usable. Verification catches malformed rows, wrong usernames, old passwords, and entries that were stored under an unexpected site name.
Prioritize accounts that are hard to recover
- Your primary email account and any recovery email account.
- Financial, government, health, work, school, and cloud-storage accounts.
- Accounts with more than one username or profile.
- Services you use on both a browser and a mobile or desktop app.
Run a practical sign-in test
- Open a private or logged-out browser window so an existing session cannot mask a missing credential.
- Visit the account’s real sign-in page and invoke the manager’s autofill control.
- Confirm that the offered domain, username, and password record are the intended ones.
- Sign in, then repeat from the mobile app or second browser if that is part of your routine.
- Test a second username for any service where the same domain hosts several accounts.
Do not change all account passwords merely to make the migration look complete. Change a password only when the imported value is wrong, obsolete, or the service requires a reset. Keep a separate recovery plan for the new manager account before removing the old browser copies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Stop Chrome and Firefox from saving new passwords
Chrome
After the tests succeed, open Chrome’s password settings and switch off Offer to save passwords and passkeys. The setting is in Chrome’s password-management controls; current menu paths generally begin with the three-dot menu, then Passwords and autofill, followed by Google Password Manager. If your version uses different wording, search Chrome Settings for “save passwords.”
Recommended Free Tools
Turning off the offer prevents new credentials from being split between Chrome and the destination vault. It does not by itself erase credentials already stored in Chrome, which is why cleanup comes later.
Best Value
Firefox
In Firefox’s password settings, clear Ask to save passwords once the destination manager is filling correctly. Firefox also provides an exception mechanism so you can stop prompts on particular websites while leaving the global behavior unchanged. Use the exception only when you have a deliberate reason to keep browser prompts for that site.
Other browsers
Browser-extension help pages commonly document controls for Chromium-based browsers, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. Look for separate switches for saving credentials and offering autofill; disabling one may not disable the other. Menu names vary by release, so confirm the visible setting and test one sign-in after changing it.
Remove old copies and the temporary export safely
Delete the CSV first
Once your priority accounts and autofill checks pass, delete the export file. Empty the operating system’s recycle bin or trash if the file was stored locally. If it was copied into a synced or shared location, remove that copy too. The objective is to eliminate readable credentials, not merely hide the original filename.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Then remove browser-stored logins
Return to the browser’s saved-password list and remove entries only after the destination manager has passed your tests. Start with duplicate or low-value records, then continue through the remaining list. Keep the new manager’s recovery information available; deleting the browser copy is not a recovery strategy.
Do not keep a CSV as a convenience backup
A USB drive, downloads folder, or cloud drive containing an unencrypted CSV is another password store that can be opened by anyone with access. If you need a recovery plan, use the destination manager’s supported recovery and account-protection options rather than retaining a plaintext export.
Common problems and precise fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The importer rejects the file. | The file is not CSV, the header row is wrong, or the destination expects a different template. | Open a copy, confirm the required format, and use the destination manager’s template. For Chrome’s documented format, check for url, username, and password headers. |
| Some accounts are missing. | They may be in another browser profile, an older device, or beyond an import limit. | Check every profile and source device, count rows, and import in batches within the documented limits. |
| A record exists but autofill offers the wrong value. | Duplicate usernames, an old password, or an incorrect domain field. | Open the record, compare the URL and username, and keep only the current credential after confirming it works. |
| An app login does not appear. | The app name may have landed in an unexpected CSV field. | Search by service name, domain, and username; then correct the record’s fields. |
| Chrome still asks to save passwords. | The save switch remains enabled, or a browser update changed its location. | Search Chrome Settings for “save passwords,” disable Offer to save passwords and passkeys, and test again. |
| Firefox offers to save a login. | Ask to save passwords is still enabled, or the site is not excluded. | Turn off the global setting or add that website to Firefox’s exception list. |
| Firefox cannot import Chrome passwords automatically. | On Windows or Linux, Firefox 140 and later require CSV migration for Chrome passwords. | Export from Chrome and use the CSV option in Firefox’s migration wizard. |
| The old browser and manager both fill credentials. | Browser storage was not disabled after the handoff. | Turn off the browser’s save prompt and remove old entries only after verifying the manager. |
A completion checklist
- The manager is installed on every computer, phone, and tablet used for sign-ins.
- The browser export or migration finished without unreviewed errors.
- High-value accounts and multiple-username services were tested from a logged-out state.
- Desktop and mobile autofill supplied the intended record.
- Chrome’s Offer to save passwords and passkeys is off, or Firefox’s Ask to save passwords is off.
- The CSV and all synced or trashed copies are deleted.
- Browser-stored entries are removed only after the new manager works.
- A recovery method for the destination manager is documented and available.
What happens to convenient sign-in after the switch?
Convenience moves from the browser’s built-in store to the manager’s extension and mobile autofill service. The practical difference is that one deliberately chosen vault becomes the source of truth instead of several browser profiles collecting new credentials. The handoff is complete when the manager fills the accounts you actually use, browser prompts no longer create duplicates, and no plaintext export remains on the device.
