Open Facebook’s Feeds tab from the shortcut bar or Menu, then choose the combined feed or a filter such as Friends, Favorites, Pages or Groups. Where Facebook still shows Most Recent, select it for newest-posts-first ordering. The Home tab remains a ranked, personalized feed, so Feeds or Most Recent is the destination to revisit when you want chronological posts.
What Facebook’s chronological feed is now
Facebook does not provide a universal switch that permanently changes the opening Home tab into a chronological timeline. Instead, it provides a separate destination called Feeds. Feeds is designed for posts from people and communities you already connect with, displayed in recent-post order rather than ranked according to predicted interest.

Meta introduced the Feeds tab on July 21, 2022, describing it as a way to find the most recent posts from friends, Favorites, Pages and groups. The practical distinction is important: opening Facebook normally takes you to Home, while choosing Feeds takes you to the newest-first view.

Before you start: what “chronological” means on Facebook
Chronological means that newer eligible posts are placed ahead of older eligible posts. It does not mean Facebook will show every item created anywhere on the service. Your account must be connected to the source, and the selected filter determines which sources qualify.
For example, a Friends view can show recent posts from friends but not a Page update. A Pages view can show Pages you follow but not a friend’s status. The combined Feeds view is broader, yet it still covers connected people and communities rather than the entire public Facebook catalog.
Chronological also does not mean uninterrupted. Ads remain in Feeds, and a post can disappear because it was deleted, made unavailable to you, or belongs to a source outside the selected filter. Think of Feeds as newest-first ordering for eligible connected content, not a permanent archive.
Switch to newest posts on the Facebook mobile app
The exact location of tabs can differ by device, country, account and app version. On iOS, the shortcut bar may appear at the bottom of the screen; on Android, Meta says it may appear at the top. The tabs shown can also change according to usage.
- Open the Facebook app.
- Open Feeds. Tap Feeds in the shortcut bar if it is visible. Otherwise tap Menu and choose Feeds.
- Choose the scope you want. Select the combined Feeds view, or narrow it to Friends, Favorites, Pages or Groups.
- Use Most Recent when available. If your app shows Most Recent in the Feed Filter Bar or Shortcuts menu, tap it. This explicitly requests newest posts first.
- Return through the same destination. Home may still be the first screen the app opens next time, so use the shortcut bar or Menu to return to Feeds whenever you want the chronological view.
A filter changes which connected sources you see. For example, Friends limits the view to friend posts, while Pages shows posts from Pages you follow. The combined view is broader, but it still concerns connected people and communities rather than every public post on Facebook.
Switch to chronological posts on desktop
- Sign in to Facebook in your browser.
- Find Feeds. Choose Feeds from the left-side navigation or another navigation area where Facebook has placed it.
- Open the desired filter. Use the combined feed or select Friends, Favorites, Pages or Groups.
- Select Most Recent if it is listed. Older or transitional desktop layouts may show the control in a Feed Filter Bar, Shortcuts menu or navigation menu.
If Feeds is not immediately visible, open Facebook’s Menu, use navigation search if available, and inspect shortcut customization. Desktop placement is not fixed, so the destination matters more than the location of its link.
After selecting a filter, verify the heading or active tab before judging the result. If the page says Home, you are still on the ranked discovery surface. If it says Feeds, Friends, Pages, Groups, Favorites or Most Recent, you have selected a connected-source view.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFeeds versus Home: what changes
Home and Feeds are different surfaces, not two display settings for the same page. Meta says Home uses a machine-learning ranking system with thousands of signals to order content according to what it predicts a person will value. Feeds is the practical route for checking connected sources in recent-post order.
| Characteristic | Home | Feeds / Most Recent |
|---|---|---|
| Ordering | Algorithmically ranked and personalized | Newest posts first when using Feeds or Most Recent |
| Source scope | Connected content plus discovery recommendations | People and communities you already connect with |
| Available filters | Not the dedicated chronological filter destination | Combined view, Friends, Favorites, Pages and Groups |
| Suggested For You posts | May appear as part of the discovery experience | Not included in Feeds |
| Advertisements | May appear | Still included |
| Role when Facebook opens | Opening tab | Separate destination to select |
Because Home is still ranked, seeing an older post there does not mean Feeds failed. It means you are looking at the discovery surface rather than the chronological destination.

Choose the right Feeds filter
Combined Feeds view
Use the combined view when you want recent activity from the connected sources Facebook makes available through Feeds. It is broader than a single category, but it is not a complete archive of every post you could theoretically access.
Friends
Choose Friends when your priority is posts published by personal connections. Posts from Pages or groups are outside this filter. If you are checking for a particular person’s latest update, this is usually the least distracting starting point.
Recommended Free Tools
Favorites
Favorites prioritizes selected friends and Pages. Meta’s 2021 announcement said you could select up to 30 friends and Pages for this list. That limit applies to the Favorites selection described in that announcement; the exact management screen can vary by account. Favorites is therefore useful for a small priority list, not for every account you follow.
Pages
Pages limits the view to Pages you follow or otherwise connect with. It is useful when you want recent updates from organizations, publishers or creators without friend posts mixed in.
Groups
Groups focuses on activity from groups you are part of. Group privacy and membership still determine what can appear; the filter does not expose groups or posts you cannot access.
Where the Most Recent option went
Most Recent was made easier to reach through Facebook’s Feed Filter Bar and Shortcuts menu. Meta’s March 31, 2021 announcement said Android users could reach the bar by scrolling up on News Feed, with iOS support announced for the following weeks. Facebook has since emphasized Feeds as the main destination, so some interfaces show Feeds without a separate Most Recent label.

If you find Feeds but not Most Recent, use Feeds and select the relevant source filter. The chronological destination can exist even when the older label does not.
Pin Feeds so it is easier to reach
Facebook allows shortcut customization, although the controls and labels vary. If Feeds is useful, pin it to the shortcut bar rather than relying on a remembered position.
- Open Facebook’s Menu or shortcut customization controls.
- Find Feeds in the available shortcuts.
- Choose the option to pin, show or add it to the shortcut bar.
- Save the change, then use the new shortcut the next time you want recent posts.
Pinning changes navigation convenience; it does not convert Home into a permanent chronological default.

What appears in a chronological Feeds view
Feeds is limited to people and communities with which you already have a connection on Facebook. Depending on the selected filter, that can include friends, Favorites, Pages and groups. Meta specifically says Feeds has no Suggested For You posts.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Advertisements are still included. Chronological ordering therefore does not mean an ad-free stream, nor does it guarantee that every item is an ordinary post from a friend.
A filter can narrow the result further. For that reason, Feeds should not be described as every post on Facebook or as a complete historical record of all activity from every account you follow.
Why Facebook shows old posts first on Home
Home is intentionally ranked rather than chronological. Meta says its machine-learning system considers thousands of signals and orders content according to what it believes will be most valuable to you. That ranking can place an older post above a newer one.
To see posts in publishing order, leave Home and open Feeds or Most Recent. Refreshing Home, scrolling farther, or changing engagement settings does not turn that surface into a newest-first list.
An old item in Feeds can still be explained by scope rather than ranking: perhaps newer posts belong to a different filter, are from a source you do not connect with, or are unavailable to your account. Check the active filter before assuming the order is wrong.
Troubleshoot a missing or different Feeds menu
Feeds is not in the shortcut bar
Open Menu and look for Feeds there. If it is available, use shortcut customization to pin it. Facebook changes which tabs are displayed and where they appear, so absence from the bar does not necessarily mean the feature is unavailable.
Menu wording does not match these steps
Labels and placement can differ by country, app version, device and account. Search the navigation area for Feeds, inspect Shortcuts, and look for a Feed Filter Bar or a Most Recent control rather than relying on one fixed screen layout.
You see Feeds but the list is not what you expected
Check the selected filter. Friends, Favorites, Pages and Groups each have a different source scope. Switch to the combined view if you want a broader set of connected sources.

Ads still appear
This is expected. Meta states that ads are included in Feeds. The absence of Suggested For You posts does not mean the view contains only unpaid friend updates.
Facebook opens Home again
That behavior is expected under Meta’s documented model. Feeds and Most Recent are separate access points, while Home remains the opening ranked feed. Keep Feeds pinned or use Menu to reopen it.
The Most Recent label is gone
Use Feeds as the current route. The label has not been documented as a permanent control in every interface, and Facebook has changed navigation over time.
A filter is empty or nearly empty
An empty result can simply reflect the filter’s scope. Friends does not include Pages, Pages does not include group posts, and Favorites only covers the friends and Pages you selected. Try the combined view to determine whether the issue is filtering rather than availability.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The shortcut moved after an update
Check both the top and bottom areas of the app, then open Menu and shortcut customization. Meta says shortcut tabs can change with usage, so a moved tab is not proof that chronological viewing was removed.
A practical routine for keeping up with new posts
- Open Feeds before browsing. This avoids confusing ranked discovery results with recent updates.
- Start with the combined view. Use it when you want activity across connected friends, Pages and groups.
- Narrow the scope when necessary. Switch to Friends, Favorites, Pages or Groups for a focused check.
- Use Most Recent when it is visible. It is the explicit newest-first command in interfaces that retain it.
- Pin Feeds. A shortcut reduces the chance that you will accidentally return to Home and assume the chronological view has stopped working.
For a quick daily check, open Feeds, scan the combined view, then use Friends or Favorites if you are looking for personal updates. Switch to Pages or Groups when you want organization or community activity without unrelated posts. This sequence keeps the ordering and source scope clear.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Important limits to the chronological view
- It is not a permanent Home replacement. Facebook does not document a universal setting that makes chronological ordering the opening default for every account.
- It is not an all-Facebook timeline. Feeds covers connected sources and can be narrowed by filter.
- It does not remove ads. Advertisements remain part of Feeds.
- It does not include Suggested For You posts. That discovery category is excluded from Feeds.
- The interface is variable. Country, device, account, app version and usage can affect labels, tab position and availability.
- Filters are mutually limiting in practice. A focused filter may omit newer content that would appear in another filter or in the combined view.
Key dates behind Facebook’s feed controls
| Date | Announcement or capability |
|---|---|
| March 31, 2021 | Meta product manager Ramya Sethuraman announced easier access to Most Recent through the Feed Filter Bar and Shortcuts menu, describing it as chronological with newest posts first. |
| July 21, 2022 | Meta announced Home and Feeds as distinct destinations, with Feeds focused on recent posts from connected friends, Favorites, Pages and groups. |
Bottom line for Facebook users
For newest-first posts, open Feeds, select the source filter you need, and choose Most Recent whenever that control appears. Treat Home as a separate ranked discovery surface. If Feeds disappears from the shortcut bar, find it through Menu or shortcut customization; navigation can change, but the destination remains the reliable route to chronological updates.

Why is Facebook showing old posts first?
You are probably viewing Home, which is ranked by a machine-learning system using thousands of signals. Leave Home and open Feeds or Most Recent for recent-post ordering.
Where did the Most Recent option go?
Facebook has emphasized Feeds and does not show the older label in every interface. Check Menu, Shortcuts, shortcut customization and the Feed Filter Bar. Feeds remains the current route to connected posts in recent order.
Can I make Facebook show newest posts first every time it opens?
Facebook does not document a universal setting that permanently replaces Home with a chronological default. Pin Feeds to the shortcut bar so it is quick to open, but expect Home may still load first.
Does Facebook’s chronological feed include every post?
No. Feeds covers people and communities you already connect with, and filters can narrow it further. It is not a complete archive of every public or historical post on Facebook.
Are ads removed in Feeds?
No. Meta says ads are included in Feeds. The view excludes Suggested For You posts, but it is not an ad-free stream.
What is the difference between Friends and Favorites?
Friends covers posts from your friends. Favorites prioritizes the friends and Pages you select; Meta’s 2021 description allowed up to 30 friends and Pages in that list.
Why can’t I find Feeds on my phone?
Shortcut tabs vary by account and usage. Check the shortcut bar, Menu, Shortcuts and shortcut customization. On iOS the bar may be at the bottom; on Android it may be at the top.
