You can switch between Meta AI and ChatGPT without rebuilding everything from memory, but the official help sources do not document a direct way to import one service’s chat history into the other. Export what you can, collect the reusable context and files, then recreate the parts of your workflow you actually need.
What transfers—and what does not
ChatGPT and Meta AI document service-specific ways to export or manage information, not a Meta AI-to-ChatGPT or ChatGPT-to-Meta AI history import. Treat an export as an archive to consult, not as a file you can upload and turn into native conversations in the other assistant.

The most reliable things to carry forward are durable details: project goals, preferences, source documents, reusable prompts, and examples of the output format you want. Preserve full conversation histories only when they are useful; a concise workflow brief is easier to maintain and reuse.

List the recurring tasks you expect the new assistant to handle, then note the context and tools each one needs. This helps distinguish important material from a long archive of one-off questions.

- Task: What do you regularly ask the assistant to do?
- Context: Which goals, preferences, project facts, or constraints affect the answer?
- Inputs: Which source files, links, or reference materials must be available?
- Instructions: Do you reuse a prompt, a required structure, or a particular output format?
- Entry point and mode: Do you use text, images, voice, web information, or a particular app or device?
- Persistence: Should a conversation be saved, or do you need a temporary, non-persistent chat?
Meta AI is available through multiple entry points, including its website, mobile app, and Meta’s social and messaging apps. Meta lists text, image, voice, files, and web-information capabilities; availability can differ by market and rollout. Identify the specific Meta AI surface and task you use rather than assuming every feature is available in every app. See Meta’s Meta AI assistant overview and its 2025 Meta AI app announcement.
Export the history you may need
Export ChatGPT data
For an eligible ChatGPT account, request an export from Settings > Data controls > Export data, or use the OpenAI Privacy Portal. OpenAI says the ZIP includes chat history and other relevant account data. Check that the archive downloaded and locate the conversations you need before deleting chats or changing accounts. An export cannot restore conversations already deleted.

The download link expires 24 hours after receipt, and preparing an export can take up to seven days. OpenAI’s self-service export is unavailable for Business, Enterprise, and Healthcare workspaces; Edu eligibility depends on the user’s role and workspace settings. If you use one of those workspaces, check with its administrator rather than assuming the personal-account export path applies. Keep the ZIP secure: it may contain sensitive account information.

Download Meta AI history from WhatsApp
WhatsApp documents a specific download flow for its Meta AI chat. In WhatsApp, open the Meta AI chat, go to Chat history, choose a conversation, and send /download-all-ai-info. The help page says a download link will be provided. This procedure is documented for WhatsApp; it should not be assumed to export history from the Meta AI app, website, or other Meta products.

You cannot request or download this history if the Meta AI chat or your WhatsApp account has been deleted. See WhatsApp’s instructions for downloading Meta AI chat history and export anything important while the chat and account remain available.
Build a portable workflow brief
Once you have the relevant material, turn it into a short document you control. Use your archive to recover details, but do not treat it as a ready-made migration. Keep original reference files separate so you can attach or organize them in whichever service you use next.

- Write down the recurring task. State what you want done and what a useful result looks like.
- Record durable context. Include project facts, audience, preferences, constraints, terminology, and decisions that still matter.
- Save reusable instructions. Copy prompts and output requirements you use repeatedly, editing out stale details.
- Collect source material. Retain the original documents and links needed to do the work; do not rely on a chat transcript as the only copy.
- Keep only useful examples. Save a small number of conversations that clarify a process or decision, rather than carrying forward every exchange.
This brief is a practical manual handoff, not an official conversion format. Avoid uploading a full archive by default: review it first, remove material you do not need, and check the destination service’s privacy and data controls before sharing sensitive content.

Use a Project for ongoing work
In ChatGPT, a Project can group related chats, files, and project instructions. Add the workflow brief and relevant source files to the project, then put stable task guidance in its instructions. If an existing chat is eligible to move, use the move-to-project option described in OpenAI’s Projects guide. This organizes work in ChatGPT; it does not import Meta AI conversations as native ChatGPT chats.

Check Memory rather than treating it as an archive
ChatGPT Memory may use relevant available context, but it is not a complete record of every conversation. OpenAI states, “Memory does not retain every detail from every conversation.” Review the Memory settings and manage saved memories separately from chat history; deleting a chat and deleting a saved memory are distinct actions. For important instructions or project facts, keep an explicit brief or project file instead of relying on the assistant to remember them. Memory behavior and feature availability can vary with plan, region, platform, and workspace.
Re-create the workflow in Meta AI
If you are moving in the other direction, bring the same brief and source files to the Meta AI entry point you intend to use. Check whether that specific app or surface supports the input and task modes you rely on; Meta’s feature list does not guarantee identical availability everywhere. Do not assume a ChatGPT export can be imported as Meta AI chat history, because the official sources cited here do not establish such a feature.
Test the handoff before relying on it
- Choose one low-stakes recurring task from your list.
- Provide the new assistant with the relevant brief, prompt, and source files.
- Check whether it has the required context and can produce the format you expect.
- Confirm you are using the right app or device and that any needed mode—such as image or voice input—is available to you.
- Revise the brief or instructions where the result misses a requirement, then try the next recurring task.
Account for chats that are not saved
In ChatGPT, Temporary Chats do not appear in chat history or create memories, according to OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ. Meta announced Incognito Chat for WhatsApp and the Meta AI app as a mode whose conversations are not saved and whose messages disappear by default. In its May 13, 2026 announcement, Meta said rollout would continue over the coming months, so check whether the option is available in your account. Do not use a temporary or incognito chat as the sole location for work you need to retain.
Keep the archive and the working context separate
Store downloaded exports in a location you control and protect them as sensitive files. Keep the portable brief and current source documents separate from the full archive: the brief is for rebuilding a workflow, while the archive is a reference copy. Before sharing either with another service, review the contents and its data settings so you do not disclose conversations or account information unnecessarily.
