Keep the same YouTube live event running and switch the program in your encoder: use OBS scenes or independently controlled audio sources to move between prerecorded or live guidance and quiet periods. Decide first whether “silence” means no voice with ambience still playing, or no audio at all.
What controls the transition?
OBS (or another encoder) sends the live program to YouTube. YouTube is the destination; the encoder controls what viewers hear and see. Switch OBS scenes or change source audio while leaving the encoder and YouTube event running. YouTube Live Redirect is not an in-stream transition feature: it hands viewers off after a stream ends.

For a continuous event, the encoder, network, audio chain and monitoring must keep working throughout. YouTube Help recommends continuously monitoring streams for audio and video quality. Its encoder instructions also state that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is an archiving detail, not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation or a recommendation for an indefinite stream.

OBS supports common audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV as media sources. A VLC Video Source can provide an ordered playlist. The right choice depends on whether narration is live or prerecorded, whether ambience continues, and whether transitions are manual or playlist-driven.

Set up OBS for prerecorded guidance
- Add the guidance: In OBS, add a Media Source for an audio file, or add a VLC Video Source if you want an ordered playlist. Install VLC if using the VLC source.
- Make the states explicit: Create a “Guided” scene and a “Silence” scene, or keep the sources in one scene and control narration and ambience separately. OBS scenes can contain media and audio sources.
- Define silence: For voice-free ambience, disable or mute only the narration source. For true silence, mute all program audio sources. Use the OBS mixer mute control and level meters while rehearsing.
- Set switching controls: Assign OBS hotkeys for the relevant scene or source visibility controls if you will switch manually. Rehearse the change so you can confirm the correct source state without stopping the stream.
- Check file boundaries: If using a playlist, confirm how the source behaves when a file ends, whether it loops as intended, and what happens when the source is hidden. Do not assume a media file ending will leave the live event in the desired state.
Use live spoken guidance instead
Add a dedicated audio input for the microphone and monitor its level in OBS. During the quiet period, mute or hide that narration input; leave ambience enabled if the quiet state includes it. When returning to guidance, unmute or show the input and confirm that speech is reaching the output.
A USB microphone is optional hardware for this workflow, not a requirement for prerecorded guidance. OBS warns that capturing the same device globally and again as a scene source can create echo; choose one capture route and monitor the output during rehearsal.

Connect OBS to the YouTube event
- Create or schedule the encoder stream: In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live event and open its Live Control Room. Controls and eligibility can vary, so verify the current interface and that your channel can go live before the planned session.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key: Enter them in OBS’s streaming settings (or the equivalent fields in another encoder). Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview: YouTube recommends arranging the encoder stream ahead of time, starting the encoder before the event, and checking the Live Control Room preview before going live.
- Keep the event and encoder running: Make guided-to-quiet changes inside OBS. Do not stop the encoder or end the YouTube event for a normal transition.
Preflight the transition and stream quality
- Run through guided, voice-free ambience (if used), and true-silence states. Confirm what the audience hears in each one.
- Check narration return, media playback, playlist behavior at file boundaries, and that switching scenes or sources does not stop the encoder.
- Watch OBS meters and the YouTube preview for unexpected audio, echo, silence when ambience should remain, or a source that fails to restart.
- Leave upload capacity headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% room beyond the total stream bitrate; this is bandwidth headroom, not a target encoding bitrate.
- Monitor audio and video quality throughout the event rather than relying only on the initial preview.
The official documentation cited here does not prescribe meditation interval lengths or transition durations. Choose timings for your program and test them in advance.
Copyright, archives and continuity limits
Use audio and video you have the rights to stream. YouTube’s copyright and live-stream rules still apply to a meditation broadcast; a quiet interval does not change the status of music or other material already in the program. Review YouTube’s current rules and check any third-party recordings or ambient tracks before using them. This workflow does not establish meditation-specific platform rules or therapeutic effects.

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Treat that as an archive behavior, not proof that an encoder or network can run without interruption, and do not infer from it that an indefinite live stream is guaranteed.
Troubleshooting
