For Android Auto that projects an Android phone onto your car display, switch assistants in the Gemini app on the phone: tap Menu, your profile picture or initial, Switch to Google Assistant, then confirm Switch. Android Auto uses the phone’s selected assistant; there is no separate assistant-selection switch in the projected Android Auto interface. If your car has Google apps and services built in, use its in-car settings instead.
Switch back to Google Assistant in phone-projected Android Auto
- Park safely, then open the Gemini app on your Android phone.
- Tap Menu, then your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Switch to Google Assistant.
- When prompted, tap Switch to confirm.
- Connect the phone to your Android Auto-compatible vehicle. Activate the selected assistant by saying “Hey Google,” tapping the microphone on the car screen, or pressing and holding the steering-wheel voice-command button if your vehicle supports it.
Google says this change also makes Google Assistant respond to “Hey Google” and the phone’s touch activation, such as pressing and holding the power button. The exact phone navigation can vary by Android device or manufacturer.

How to activate the assistant in Android Auto
- Wake phrase: Say “Hey Google.” Voice activation requires both Voice Match and “Hey Google” to be enabled.
- On-screen microphone: Tap the microphone on the car display.
- Steering-wheel control: Press and hold the voice-command button if one is available and supported by the vehicle.
Android Auto voice tasks include calls, messages, directions and media. Google says Gemini understands the same commands as Google Assistant and also supports more natural speech and detailed questions, but that does not guarantee identical behavior for every third-party app or feature. - Gemini selected as the phone’s digital assistant.
- A vehicle compatible with Android Auto.
- Availability for the language and region in use.
If Gemini is not installed, you may need to download it from Google Play before selecting it as the primary assistant. Google’s requirements and availability details are listed in its Gemini in Android Auto help page.
Google says Gemini is replacing Assistant on most mobile devices, but rollout and availability are not identical for everyone. Its Android Auto help says further transition details will be shared as it works toward upgrading Assistant users to Gemini in 2026. The option you see can depend on rollout, device and region.

Changing the assistant in a car with Google built-in
These instructions apply only to cars with Google apps and services built into the vehicle, not to Android Auto projecting a phone. On the car display:

- To return to Assistant, open Settings > Google > Gemini > Switch to use Google Assistant.
You must be signed in and have a language setting compatible with Gemini. Eligibility also varies by car maker, language, region and data plan. Check Google’s instructions for Gemini in cars with Google built-in.

Does switching back delete Gemini activity?
No. Changing the active assistant does not automatically delete saved Gemini Apps Activity. You can review and delete that activity separately in your Google Account. Switching assistants and managing saved activity are separate actions; see Google’s Gemini Apps Activity information.

The setting determines which assistant Android Auto invokes through its available voice controls. Gemini can handle the same commands Google lists for Assistant and allows more natural speech; the specific results can still vary by task, app and vehicle. Google’s Android Auto Gemini guidance covers current compatibility and behavior.
