You can switch between prerecorded game VODs without ending your YouTube livestream: keep the same YouTube broadcast running and change the video source in the encoder sending it. YouTube receives the encoder’s feed; the encoder controls which picture and sound viewers see. The exact playlist and source-switch controls depend on the encoder.
How a continuous stream can show different VODs
YouTube distinguishes the incoming stream from the viewer-facing broadcast. A broadcast is a distinct YouTube video, bound to a stream; an encoder sends the live audio and video to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. Changing the encoder’s active source changes what viewers see without inherently requiring a new broadcast. Google for Developers explains the broadcast and stream distinction.

That makes source changes an encoder-side production task. YouTube’s documentation explains connecting an encoder, but does not establish one universal playlist interface or button-by-button process for switching prerecorded files. Menu names and steps vary by encoder and version.

- Choose an encoder. Use software or a cloud encoder that can send a continuous feed to YouTube and can load or sequence the VOD files you want to play. YouTube names OBS and other software and cloud encoding services as examples, not endorsements; do not assume every listed service supports scheduled VOD playlists. YouTube’s encoder guide lists examples.
- Create or select the YouTube livestream. In YouTube Live Control Room, choose the stream or event you intend to use. Copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s connection settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel. See YouTube’s live stream settings guide.
- Load and order the VODs in the encoder. Add the prerecorded game videos as media sources or use the encoder’s playlist feature, if available, then arrange them in playback order. The precise controls depend on your chosen encoder; YouTube’s documentation does not specify playlist steps for a particular product.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Before presenting the event as live, inspect the Live Control Room preview, confirm the correct video and audio are present, and check that viewers can access the event from your channel or its watch page. YouTube recommends monitoring quality and verifying the stream before and during the broadcast. YouTube’s livestreaming tips.
- Change sources while keeping the broadcast live. When it is time for the next VOD, advance the playlist or switch the active source in the encoder. A brief slate or transition scene between files is optional production advice, not a YouTube requirement. Keep an eye on the preview and audio after each change.
- Record a local backup and verify it is progressing. YouTube advises checking that local archive files are growing. Plan for an archive and viewer rewind limitations on streams longer than 12 hours, rather than assuming a very long continuous session will be fully captured or rewindable.
Rights, archives, and long broadcasts
Confirm you may rebroadcast the footage and audio
Livestreams must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Permission to rebroadcast a particular game recording, soundtrack, or VOD depends on the relevant rights and permissions; a creator should not assume that owning a recording grants permission to stream it again. Review YouTube’s live streaming eligibility and policy guidance and obtain any permissions that apply to your content.

Account for the 12-hour archive and DVR caveat
YouTube says livestreams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable. These are reasons to keep your own local recording and to choose session length based on whether a dependable YouTube archive or rewind matters. See YouTube’s archive guidance and YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Choose a local or cloud workflow
| Workflow | What to compare | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Local software encoder | Playlist or source-switch support, transitions, local recording, operating-system compatibility, and monitoring needs. | You control the local media and outgoing feed; the computer and connection used for encoding must remain available while it sends the stream. |
| Cloud or managed encoder | Whether it supports prerecorded-file scheduling, automation, recovery, setup needs, and cost. | Capabilities vary. YouTube’s examples do not establish that every cloud service can schedule game VOD playlists, and the cited guidance does not compare prices. |
YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started. A capture card, stream controller, or microphone is useful only if your inputs or production call for it; none is required simply to switch between prerecorded files. YouTube’s livestreaming tips.

Troubleshoot common switching problems
- The next VOD does not appear. Check that the encoder’s playlist advanced or that the intended source became active. Confirm the new file is loaded and that the Live Control Room preview shows it.
- Video changes but audio is missing or wrong. Check the selected source’s audio routing or playback settings in the encoder, then monitor the preview before continuing.
- The broadcast stops when changing files. A source change should be made in the encoder while the YouTube broadcast remains selected and live. Check whether the encoder stopped sending its feed or whether the broadcast itself was ended; reconnect using the intended stream URL and key if needed.
- The stream key does not connect. Verify that the encoder has the correct stream URL and key for the selected YouTube event. Keep the key private and replace it if it has been exposed.
- The archive or rewind is incomplete. Check the session length: YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond that duration. Preserve a local recording for backup.
