You can move useful context when switching AI assistants, but no single export or import carries your entire setup. Treat chats, reusable preferences, project files, connected tools, and account access as separate things to preserve. The right method depends on the source and destination: ChatGPT’s personal-account upload is reference material, Gemini offers memory and chat-history imports with limits, Claude exports data but does not support importing it into another personal Claude account, and coding-agent setup has its own import route.
What to preserve before you switch
Start by deciding what “your workflow” means in practice. An assistant’s chat archive is only one part of it; active project context, saved preferences, files, tool permissions, and access to a plan or organization may live elsewhere.

- Important conversations: identify the chats you may need to consult again, rather than assuming an export will recreate them in the new assistant.
- Reusable context: collect preferences, recurring instructions, and project briefs. A concise brief is often easier to reuse than a large archive.
- Files and projects: keep source files independently of an assistant’s chat history or project feature.
- Tools and coding setup: record connected services, MCP configuration, hooks, commands, and any prompts that depend on particular paths or arguments.
- Account access: check subscriptions, workspace membership, and organization policies before cancelling or merging accounts.
Export while you can still sign in, download and inspect the archive, and save irreplaceable material separately. Then use a destination’s documented import feature only for the material it actually accepts.

Move ChatGPT personal-account conversations as reference
OpenAI’s documented method is to export conversations from an eligible personal ChatGPT account and upload the conversation file into a new conversation in another personal ChatGPT account. ChatGPT can then use the content as reference. OpenAI describes the limitation directly: “This is not a full account migration.” See OpenAI’s transfer instructions.

The export ZIP contains conversations.json; larger exports may include numbered JSON files. If the files are too large to upload together, upload numbered files separately, split a large JSON file, or include only the conversations you need. This workflow does not merge accounts, restore the old sidebar, recreate each conversation as its own chat, or bring over settings, memory, custom GPTs, files, subscriptions, or workspace access.
OpenAI says exports from Business and Enterprise workspaces are not available through ChatGPT settings. Edu export depends on administrator enablement, so check with the administrator rather than assuming the personal-account route applies.

Understand what Claude’s export does—and does not do
Anthropic’s Privacy Center page, dated July 8, 2026, says individual Claude Free, Pro, and Max users can request conversation and account data from Settings > Privacy on the web app or Claude Desktop. The export is not available from Claude’s iOS or Android apps. A Team or Enterprise organization’s Primary Owner can access organization exports. See Anthropic’s export guidance.
Anthropic sends a download link by email. You must be signed in to use it, and it expires 24 hours after delivery. Most importantly, Anthropic says exported data cannot be imported into another personal Claude account; it does not document personal-account migration through this archive. Moving a personal account into a Team or Enterprise organization is a separate process.

Import memory or chat history into Gemini
Google documents two distinct import paths on desktop. Both require a personal Google Account, saved chats and memory on the source platform, and an account holder aged 18 or older. They are unavailable for work, school, or supervised Google accounts, and in the EEA, Switzerland, and UK. Check Google’s Gemini import instructions for the current flow.
Bring over a memory summary
- In Gemini, request its suggested prompt for transferring memory from another AI platform.
- Paste that prompt into the old assistant and ask it to generate the requested summary.
- Paste the resulting memory response into Gemini. Gemini creates a new chat and uses the information in future conversations.
Bring over chat history
Prepare the chat-history ZIP file from the source platform and upload it through Gemini’s import flow. Google allows ZIP files up to 5 GB and up to five ZIP uploads per day; processing may take up to a day. Imported chats contain text, not images or files from the old app, and this tool does not import project files.

Move a coding-agent setup separately
ChatGPT desktop can import supported setup and recent work from Claude Code, Claude Cowork, or Cursor. Codex CLI supports imports from Claude Code or Cursor and lets you select setup, project files, and recent chats. The CLI import includes up to 50 chats from the last 30 days. These are coding-agent workflows, not general consumer chat migrations. See ChatGPT’s “Import from another agent” documentation.

After import, review permissions, MCP authentication and environment settings, hooks, marketplaces, and command prompts that rely on particular arguments or file paths. ChatGPT desktop’s import can be configured to update automatically and keep imported work in sync.
Treat a ChatGPT organization merge as a separate decision
Moving a personal workspace into ChatGPT Business or Enterprise is not the same as switching between consumer assistants. OpenAI says supported cloud conversations, files, projects, some saved memories, personalization, automations, and other eligible assets may transfer; some content and connections do not. After the merge, the destination organization’s access and retention policies apply. Review OpenAI’s personal-workspace migration guidance before proceeding.
The merge cannot be undone to move content back to the personal workspace, and some old or long-running conversations may not be retrievable afterward. Save important content and make a personal export first. Items may appear gradually, so check the destination after transfer. An active personal subscription is cancelled on a Business merge except subscriptions purchased through mobile app stores, which should be handled through the store.

Verify the new setup before you rely on it
- Open the imported material in the destination and confirm that the chats, files, or setup you expected are present.
- Test whether the new assistant can use the project brief and follow the preferences you supplied.
- Reconnect tools deliberately and review their permissions, authentication, and environment settings.
- Check workspace membership, account access, and any subscription changes.
- Only after the new workflow works should you decide whether to cancel or merge the source account.
