You can optionally let individual users switch between the Classic and Block editors. This restores the old post-editing screen, but it does not turn a block theme’s Site Editor or templates into the classic interface.

What switching back actually does
The Classic Editor plugin restores the previous WordPress post-editing screen and the associated “Edit Post” workflow. It can make the Classic Editor the site default and, when you permit it, expose controls for choosing an editor per user or per eligible post.

This is an editor-interface change, not an automatic content conversion. A post that already contains blocks remains block-based unless you deliberately edit or convert that content. The plugin also does not replace the Site Editor used by block themes, nor does it automatically restore the old widgets screen.
- Posts and pages: the configured editor can be Classic instead of the Block Editor.
- Existing block content: changing the default editor does not promise a perfect conversion to classic markup.
- Block themes and Full Site Editing: templates, styles, navigation, and Site Editor controls remain block-based.
- Widgets: the widgets editor is a separate feature and needs its own setting or plugin.
Before you change the setting
Check your theme and content model
Look at Appearance in the dashboard. If the site uses a block theme and offers a Site Editor, decide whether you only need a classic screen for posts and pages or whether you are trying to restore every older WordPress interface. Classic Editor can address eligible post and page editing, but it cannot make a block theme’s templates and global design controls behave like a classic theme.

Back up production content
Changing the editor default is reversible, but editor plugins can affect how fields, shortcodes, custom post types, and third-party metaboxes load. Take a current database and files backup, and test the change on a staging copy when the site is business-critical. Pay particular attention to posts with complex columns, galleries, embeds, reusable blocks, or custom fields.
Check administrator access
You need permission to install and activate plugins and to change Settings → Writing. If those menus are missing, ask a site administrator or hosting provider to make the change.
Install and activate Classic Editor
- Sign in to the WordPress dashboard.
- Open Plugins → Add New.
- Search for Classic Editor.
- Choose the plugin published by WordPress.org. The WordPress-maintained repository describes it as the official plugin that restores the previous WordPress editor and “Edit Post” screen.
- Click Install Now, wait for installation to finish, and select Activate.
Do not install several plugins that all attempt to disable or replace Gutenberg. If another editor-disabling plugin is already active, decide which approach you want before changing settings; overlapping replacements can load redundant scripts and produce unexpected or untested behavior.
Make Classic Editor the site default
- In the dashboard, open Settings → Writing.
- Find the editor settings added by Classic Editor.
- For the default editor, choose Classic Editor.
- Choose whether users may switch editors. Leave switching disabled when every author should use the same interface; enable it when some users need the Block Editor.
- Click Save Changes.
Open a post or page after saving. A new or eligible edit screen should load in the classic interface. If your role is allowed to switch, the screen may also show an action such as Switch to block editor; a block-based screen can expose Switch to classic editor. The exact link appears only where the plugin considers the other editor available.
Allow a mixed Classic/Block workflow
When mixed editing is useful
Mixed editing can be practical during a migration, when a design team maintains block layouts while an editorial team prefers the classic toolbar, or when a custom post type has not been tested in the Block Editor. It also lets administrators move individual authors gradually instead of changing everyone at once.

How users choose
Enable the plugin’s user-switching option under Settings → Writing. Eligible users can then select an editor from their profile, and eligible posts can expose links to open them in the other editor. The site’s default still determines the starting editor for users who have not chosen a different preference.

Document which editor is expected for each post type. Switching back and forth on the same post can make the editing experience confusing, especially when a layout contains blocks that have no direct classic equivalent. Keep a backup and agree on who owns any cleanup when a post is opened in a different editor.
What happens to posts that already use blocks
Classic Editor changes the interface WordPress opens; it does not guarantee that every block layout will be translated into old-style content. A post created with paragraphs, images, columns, buttons, or other blocks may still contain block delimiters and block-specific markup when opened through a classic screen.
Before editing an important block-heavy post, duplicate it or test on staging. Check the rendered page after saving, including responsive layout, links, captions, galleries, embeds, and custom blocks. If the classic screen cannot represent a block’s controls, use the Block Editor for that post or plan a deliberate content-conversion and review process rather than assuming the conversion is lossless.
- Simple text: usually easier to review in either editor, but still verify formatting after saving.
- Complex layouts: columns, nested groups, query displays, and custom blocks need a visual check.
- Reusable or synced content: treat it as shared content; changing one instance may affect other locations.
- Shortcodes and custom fields: confirm that the plugin or theme that supplies them still loads its metaboxes and output.
Block themes and Full Site Editing: the important limit
The official Classic Editor documentation states that the plugin does not work with Full Site Editing and block themes in the sense of replacing their block-based editing system. A block theme’s templates, template parts, styles, navigation, and global settings are built from blocks and continue to be managed through the Site Editor.

If you only want classic post editing
You can still use Classic Editor for eligible posts or pages while the block theme remains active. Treat this as a split workflow: content editing may use the classic screen, while site-wide design and templates remain in Appearance → Editor (the exact menu label can vary with WordPress version and theme).
If you need the old template workflow
Classic Editor is not the solution. You would need a compatible classic theme and a separate, carefully planned theme change. That is a design and migration project, not a plugin toggle; export or document customizations and test templates before changing a live site.
Restore the older widgets screen separately
Post editing and widgets are independent. Installing Classic Editor does not automatically remove the Widgets Block Editor. Gutenberg’s developer documentation identifies three separate approaches:
- Activate Classic Widgets: use the dedicated plugin when you want the former widgets screen.
- Remove theme support: a theme can remove
widgets-block-editorsupport so WordPress uses the classic widgets interface. - Use the filter: a theme or site-specific plugin can return
falsefromuse_widgets_block_editor.
A minimal PHP filter is:
add_filter( 'use_widgets_block_editor', '__return_false' );
Place custom code in a site-specific plugin or a child theme that you control, not in a parent theme that will be overwritten by updates. Test widget areas, menus, sidebars, and theme updates after applying it. A widget-specific change does not alter the post editor, so use it only when the widgets screen is part of your requirement.
Classic Editor versus other ways to disable Gutenberg
There is no single setting that covers every WordPress editing surface. The following comparison separates the documented scope of the main approaches.

| Approach | Primary scope | Control model | Block-theme compatibility | Widgets covered? | Important caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Editor | Restores the classic post-editing screen and “Edit Post” workflow. | Site default, with optional user and eligible-post switching. | Does not replace Full Site Editing or block-theme templates. | No; widgets require a separate solution. | Do not assume block content converts perfectly to classic markup. |
| Disable Gutenberg | Broader controls, including a documented Complete Disable option. | Can disable Gutenberg more broadly, depending on its settings. | Does not turn a block theme’s underlying templates into classic templates. | Scope depends on its configuration; verify before relying on it. | Its documentation warns not to combine it with another replacement such as Classic Editor. |
| Classic Widgets | Widgets screen only. | Dedicated widget-editor replacement. | Does not alter block-theme Site Editor behavior. | Yes, specifically. | It does not restore the classic post editor. |
Choose one post-editor replacement rather than stacking Classic Editor and Disable Gutenberg. Add Classic Widgets only when the widgets interface is a separate requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify the change safely
- Open a new test post and confirm that the classic toolbar and content area appear.
- Open an existing simple post and check paragraphs, headings, links, images, and featured-image controls.
- Open a post with blocks or custom fields and confirm that its content and metaboxes are intact before saving.
- Preview the post while logged out, or use a private browser window, to verify the front-end output.
- Test an author account if you enabled user switching. Confirm that the intended editor preference and switch links are available.
- Visit Appearance → Widgets and Appearance → Editor separately if those interfaces matter to your site.
If the classic screen loads but a custom field, taxonomy box, or publishing control is missing, the problem may be an integration or compatibility issue rather than the default-editor setting. Temporarily test with a staging copy and the minimum necessary plugins, then reintroduce extensions one at a time.
Troubleshooting common problems
The Block Editor still opens
- Return to Settings → Writing and confirm that Classic Editor is selected as the default.
- Check whether user switching is enabled and whether your profile has a preference that overrides the site default.
- Confirm that the plugin is active, not merely installed.
- Make sure another editor-disabling plugin is not competing with Classic Editor.
- Clear any page or object cache only after confirming the setting; cached dashboard assets can make a recent change appear ineffective.
There is no switch link
Switch links are conditional. They appear only when switching is enabled and the current user, post type, and editor state are eligible. A site administrator can check the setting and test with a permitted account.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The layout looks different after saving
Do not treat the interface change as a conversion guarantee. Reopen the post in the Block Editor, inspect block warnings, or restore the backup copy if the rendered result is wrong. For a complex page, keep the original untouched until the replacement has been reviewed.
Widgets are still block-based
That is expected: Classic Editor does not control widgets. Activate Classic Widgets, remove the theme’s widgets-block-editor support, or use the documented use_widgets_block_editor filter instead.
Best Value
The site uses a block theme
Keep expectations narrow. Classic Editor may help with eligible post/page editing, but the Site Editor and block templates remain. If the objective is to restore classic templates, evaluate the theme separately rather than adding more editor plugins.
How to undo the change
To return to the Block Editor as the normal workflow, go to Settings → Writing, select the Block Editor as the default, and save. If you enabled user switching, decide whether to turn that option off so profiles cannot continue selecting a different editor. You can then deactivate and remove Classic Editor after testing the site.
If you used Disable Gutenberg or a widget-specific plugin, reverse those changes independently. Removing Classic Editor does not automatically restore widget settings, theme support, or content that was manually edited during the period it was active.
Recommended decision checklist
- Need the old post and page screen only? Install Classic Editor and set it as the default.
- Need different editors for different authors or posts? Enable the plugin’s switching option and document the policy.
- Need to keep a block theme’s templates and Site Editor? Classic Editor can coexist for eligible content, but it will not replace those block interfaces.
- Need the old widgets screen? Handle widgets separately with Classic Widgets, theme support, or the documented filter.
- Need a broad Gutenberg shutdown? Evaluate one alternative such as Disable Gutenberg, but do not combine it with Classic Editor.
- Editing block-heavy content? Back it up, test on staging, and verify the front end after every significant save.
Bottom line
For most sites that simply want the former WordPress writing screen, the supported path is straightforward: activate Classic Editor, choose it under Settings → Writing, and decide whether users may switch. Treat block themes, widgets, and existing block layouts as separate concerns. That scope-aware setup avoids plugin overlap and lets a site keep the classic workflow where it is actually compatible.
