To show a YouTube Live loop in portrait, set up YouTube’s vertical format before you go live. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, edit the vertical layout and choose a crop or fit that suits the video. If you use a third-party encoder, configure separate horizontal and vertical outputs and use the corresponding stream keys. YouTube says you can’t add the vertical format after a stream has started.
Choose how to make the loop vertical
YouTube’s built-in Live Control Room can produce horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 versions together. It is the simpler option if you want YouTube to arrange the vertical view from your existing stream. A third-party encoder is the alternative when you can provide and configure both feeds yourself.

Set up portrait layout in YouTube Live Control Room
- On a computer, open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live.
- Open your scheduled stream from the Manage tab.
- In the vertical preview, select Edit layout.
- Choose Center crop, Fit to phone width, or Stacked. Adjust zoom and position in the canvas, then inspect the preview to ensure the important content remains visible.
- Leave dual stream enabled if you want YouTube to serve both horizontal and vertical versions. YouTube documents disabling the vertical output by turning off Dual stream in the Stream tab’s settings.
The default vertical view is a center crop of the horizontal stream. A wide loop may have titles, lyrics, or other key details near the edges that the crop cuts off. Trying another layout and checking the preview is a practical way to catch that before viewers see it; the result depends on the source composition.

Configure a third-party encoder for dual output
- Open the stream’s Stream tab in Live Control Room.
- Change the vertical preview setting from Auto to Encoder.
- Select RTMP(S) and choose the second stream key for the vertical output.
- Configure the encoder to send the horizontal and vertical versions to their corresponding stream keys. Make sure each feed has the intended aspect ratio; changing a file’s aspect ratio in YouTube Studio does not reconfigure an external encoder.
- Start the stream from YouTube Studio only after both outputs are configured and checked.

Check the loop before you go live
- Preview the framing: Check the vertical preview for cropped text, faces, artwork, or other essential material.
- Test the stream: YouTube recommends preparing ahead, previewing in Live Control Room, and monitoring audio and video quality. See its live streaming tips.
- Check encoder settings separately: Resolution, codec, frame rate, keyframes, protocol, and bitrate are encoder settings, not layout controls. YouTube’s recommended settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use its encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the configuration you use.
- Set portrait up before starting: The vertical format cannot be added once the live stream has begun.
What viewers see with dual stream
YouTube uses one shared stream URL and sends subscribers one go-live notification. Viewers browsing the mobile Shorts feed see the vertical version; other viewers see the horizontal version. Both versions share the same live chat. Vertical live streams can also appear while browsing Shorts in the YouTube mobile app, subject to YouTube’s display and eligibility rules.
