The right opening varies with difficulty and the map, so there is no universal build order or stockpile number. Watch your settlement’s live resource totals and adjust to what your people actually need.
Choose a settlement site with food and safety in mind
Before placing the Town Center, scan the nearby area for natural food sources. Crate Entertainment’s basics guide names berry bushes, fish, and deer as examples. The same guide cautions players to account for threats, including boars and wolves, when choosing a location.

Use the Harvest tool to gather trees and rocks for construction, but focus on what the settlement needs soon. Harvesting farther afield takes workers away from other tasks, so clearing a large area immediately can compete with gathering food and preparing for winter.
Feed the settlement with what the map provides
In the first year, build around natural food sources already within reach rather than relying on fields to solve an immediate shortage. The game’s food guide describes foragers collecting berries and herbs, hunters bringing in game, and fishermen using nearby water. Availability depends on the location you chose.
#1 Best Overall
- A META-COOPERATIVE SURVIVAL EXPERIENCE: Step into a world where humanity teeters on the brink of extinction. Dead of Winter immerses players in a small colony of survivors facing flesh-craving monsters and the unforgiving winter cold.
- PSYCHOLOGICAL SURVIVAL: Delve into a story-centric game. Survivors grapple with personal psychological imperatives. Collaboration is crucial to fend off external threats, resolve crises, scavenge for supplies, and maintain the colony's fragile morale.
- STRATEGIC DECISIONS: Frequent challenging decisions require you to weigh the greater good of the colony against personal interests. The survival of the colony, the battle against the undead, and the dynamics among survivors all hang in the balance.
- COOPERATION AMIDST CHAOS: While coping with their own psychological burdens, players must find ways to cooperate, defend against external dangers, and ensure the colony's survival. Trust is a rare commodity in a world gone mad.
- UNIQUE CHARACTERS: Dozens of unique characters each have their own stories and motivations. Experience an emergent narrative. Navigate wildly-varying decisions, ensuring that no two games are alike. But beware, as a betrayer may lurk within your ranks.
| Food source | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Berries and herbs | Foraging uses resources present on the map; herbs also have a treatment role if disease occurs. |
| Game | Hunting can provide meat and hides, but depends on game being available nearby. |
| Fish | Fishing is an option where the settlement has suitable nearby water. |
| Crop fields | Preparing and tilling fields takes significant labor, which can make them a poor first-year fix for an immediate food need. |
There is no documented food reserve that guarantees survival across all starts. Starting resources vary with difficulty, and the map determines which natural sources you can use. Check the in-game resource summary and food stocks rather than aiming for a fixed number.
Produce firewood before winter
Raw logs do not remove the need to plan for firewood. The Firewood Splitter is available from the start, and Crate Entertainment’s buildings guide describes it as an early structure. The basics guide warns that running out of firewood when winter arrives can quickly put the settlement in danger.

- Who will avoid becoming tonight’s dinner and make it off the mountain alive? And who are the suspicious scoundrels hungry for human flesh?
- A fast-paced game of social deduction in which cannibals and pioneers face off in a fight for survival
- A party game that's rowdy, outrageous, and full of playful deception
- Ages 12 and up, 4-10 players
- Includes game board and 62 identity (Pioneers, Cannibals, and more!) and playing cards
Set up firewood production in advance and keep an eye on stored resources in the top HUD. The official guidance gives no universal firewood target; the appropriate stock depends on your settlement’s needs, so use your own resource totals to judge whether production is keeping pace.

Provide shelter, including near remote work
Food and shelter are both basic needs identified in the official basics guide. Make sure villagers have housing rather than spending all available labor and materials on production.
Rank #3
- EXPANSION FOR NATURE BOARD GAME – CORE GAME REQUIRED: This is not a standalone game. The Nature Board Game (sold separately) is required to play. Combine with other modules to create entirely new ecosystems.
- SURVIVAL AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD: A frozen landscape where food is brutally scarce and the bitter cold threatens everything alive. Only the toughest species make it out.
- NEW TRAITS TO MASTER: Hibernate through the freeze, migrate before food runs out, or evolve cold-weather adaptations that let your species thrive where others collapse.
- SOLO MODE INCLUDED: New automated opponent species cards built for Arctic Tundra. The most challenging solo experience in the Nature game system — fully compatible with all modules.
- BEAUTIFULLY MADE: Breathtaking arctic wildlife art by Danea Fidler. All components biodegradable — no plastic.
For people working far from the town, Temporary Shelters can provide nearby shelter and let them work longer. The buildings guide points to remote workplaces such as mines and work camps as useful places to consider them. Build for an actual distance or work need instead of creating a large housing surplus that consumes labor and resources.
Protect gathered food from spoilage
Food spoils, and spoiled food cannot safely be eaten. A food guide explains that root cellars preserve food better than storehouses; upgraded storage improves insulation, barrels delay spoilage for many foods, and processing can extend shelf life.
Rank #4
- A city-survival escape room-style game in which every decision comes with a cost.
- 1-4 Players
Check the resource summary for spoilage timing and storage conditions. Producing more perishable food than you can store well may not help as much as improving storage or balancing production with what the settlement can preserve.

Guided Start
Crate Entertainment’s v1.1.0 patch notes, posted April 9, 2026, say Guided Start is enabled by default for a first settlement and supplies objectives to help players reach Tier 2. It is a useful in-game guide to the opening systems if you are learning how food, shelter, and production fit together.
Best Value
- Face a fearsome sect of the Children of Atom, led by the Last Son of Atom, in an action-packed, open-ended and non-linear sandbox questline that can take characters from level 1 - 21.
- Within the 248-page Winter of Atom quest book you will: Meet brand new groups of survivors, from beatniks and circus big tops, to traveling casinos and religious weaponsmiths.
- Create characters with new origin options: Generation 3 Synths, Protectrons, and Children of Atom. Enhance your game with new rules for surviving the harsh winter and gaining reputation with settlements.
- This book requires the core rules found in the Fallout: The Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook but could be played using the rules and pregen characters found in the Fallout: The Roleplaying Game Starter Set.
Shelter Inside
The v1.1.1 patch notes, posted May 14, 2026, describe a Shelter Inside command at the Town Center. It orders villagers to garrison there when possible and sends the rest to their homes. Activating it pauses all production until you deactivate it, so treat it as an alert or protection action—not a way to heat homes through winter.
