A layoff can create urgent financial and coverage questions as well as career uncertainty; the person affected gets to decide which to address first.
Offer help the person can accept or decline
A studio closure or layoff is not a verdict on someone’s skill or value. Avoid assuming the person wants to job-hunt, revise a portfolio, or talk about what happened right away. A simple question gives them room to say what they need: “Would practical help, company, or some space be best today?”

Make the offer concrete and easy to refuse. For example:
- “I saw a gameplay programmer role at a studio that seems relevant. Want me to send it?”
- “Would you like a portfolio review, or would you rather not work on applications yet?”

- “If you want, I can help find the right unemployment or health-coverage information for your location.”
Follow through on what they choose. If they are not ready to act, checking in later without demanding an update can be more useful than unsolicited advice.

Where can laid-off game developers find work and peer support?
IGDA career channels and mentorship
The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) Career Center points job seekers to game-industry postings, free Discord job-opportunities and looking-for-work channels, networking through local chapters and discipline-based Special Interest Groups, and its Global Mentorship Program. IGDA says mentors may offer career, résumé, portfolio, and networking advice. Check the current access or membership conditions for a particular service before telling someone it is available to them: IGDA Career Center.
IGDA’s layoff resource list
IGDA’s Resource Consolidation Initiative brings together resources intended to help developers experiencing layoffs as well as people advancing their game-development careers. Its page links to a layoff resource list: IGDA Resource Consolidation Initiative. You can offer to look through it together rather than sending a long list without context.

What the industry figures do—and do not—say
In its 2026 State of the Game Industry report, GDC Festival of Gaming said it surveyed more than 2,300 game-industry professionals. Among respondents, 28% said they had been laid off in the previous two years; the figure was 33% among U.S.-based respondents. Half said their current or most recent employer had conducted layoffs in the previous 12 months. These are survey responses, not a census or a count of every game worker: GDC 2026 State of the Game Industry.

What immediate financial help may be available?
UVW-CWA Game Worker Hardship Fund
Game Developer reported on July 2, 2026, that union members at United Videogame Workers-CWA established a hardship fund for affected workers in the United States and Canada. The report said nonmembers could also seek assistance and described a smaller amount of up to $1,000 or a larger amount between $1,000 and $5,000 for needs such as groceries, medical bills, and rent. Those are the terms reported at that time, not a promise that the fund is still accepting applications, has funds available, or will approve a particular request. U.S. Rapid Response services
In the United States, Department of Labor Rapid Response teams may provide information and services before a layoff date. Services can include unemployment-insurance information, health-coverage options, training, career counseling, job-search assistance, and résumé or interview workshops. Availability depends on the state and the layoff situation. Ask whether the worker has been offered a Rapid Response session; if not, help them locate their state or local team through the Department of Labor’s Rapid Response services page.

Unemployment insurance
For someone in the United States who has become unemployed, the Department of Labor advises contacting the state unemployment-insurance program as soon as possible. State laws and other requirements determine eligibility and benefits, so do not promise that a particular worker qualifies. Direct them to the relevant state program through the federal unemployment-insurance information page and help them organize questions or paperwork if they want assistance.

Health coverage after job loss
Some U.S. workers may be eligible to continue employer group health coverage under COBRA, but employer size, plan coverage, and other conditions matter. Federal guidance describes a 60-day election period measured from the later of the notice date or the date coverage ends; the person may have to pay the full premium plus a 2% administrative fee. Encourage them to read their official election notice and compare available options rather than assuming COBRA is available or the best choice. U.S. federal guidance does not establish rights or benefits in other countries. For a worker elsewhere, help identify the appropriate national or regional employment, unemployment, and health agencies and check their current rules; do not assume the U.S. process applies.

Keep worker organizing in perspective
UVW-CWA’s March 25, 2026 announcement described organizing activity and a proposed Game Workers’ Bill of Rights. It also listed a virtual conference for May 22–23, 2026, dates that have passed. The announcement is useful as a record of organizing, not as a current event listing: CWA’s UVW-CWA announcement.
GDC’s 2026 survey also found that 82% of U.S.-based respondents supported game-industry unionization, 5% opposed it, and 13% were unsure. That describes the views of surveyed respondents, not every U.S. game worker. If a colleague asks about organizing, share information without treating union membership or participation as a condition for support.
