To strip wood in Minecraft, use an axe on a log or stem. The block changes to its stripped variant in place; this is an in-game interaction, not a crafting-table recipe. A block of bamboo can also be stripped in the Java snapshot feature described below.
How to strip a log or stem
- Find or place the log or stem you want to change.
- Select an axe in your hotbar.
- Use the axe on the block. A log becomes a stripped log; a stem becomes a stripped stem.
The exact key or button depends on your edition and input device. The cited reference does not establish current controls for every Java and Bedrock platform, so use the action your game assigns to using an item on a block.

What changes when wood is stripped?
The block remains a placeable building block, and stripped logs and stems act like their regular counterparts. Stripped variants also have crafting uses. To find a particular recipe and its required materials, check the in-game recipe book.
Can you strip a block of bamboo?
Minecraft’s official Java Snapshot 22w45a announcement says that a block of bamboo “can be stripped like other wood logs.” The same announcement says the block can be crafted from 9 bamboo. This confirms the feature in that Java snapshot context; it does not establish the current behavior or controls in every edition.
