You can remove selected metadata from a JPEG without re-encoding its image data: parse the JPEG’s marker segments, omit the metadata segments you intend to remove, and copy the retained bytes unchanged. That is different from deleting every kind of metadata, and it requires more care than searching for the byte sequence FF E1.
What “strip EXIF” does—and does not—mean
JPEG files can store metadata in marker segments alongside the compressed image stream. Removing a selected segment at the byte level can avoid decoding and re-encoding the image. The pixels’ compressed data can remain unchanged, so this operation does not introduce the quality loss associated with recompressing a JPEG.

But EXIF is only one metadata family. A privacy-focused cleanup may also need to consider XMP, IPTC/Photoshop information, comments, or C2PA/JUMBF provenance data. Removing EXIF alone does not establish that those other categories are gone.

Choose the metadata policy before writing code
Decide which segments the tool should remove and which it must preserve. A broad “delete all APP segments” rule is unsafe as a default: APP segments can carry information that is useful or necessary, including color profiles.
| Segment or category | Example policy | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| APP1 EXIF | Remove for EXIF cleanup, including GPS information stored in EXIF. | This is the principal target when a reader asks to remove EXIF. |
| APP1 XMP and Extended XMP | Remove if the goal includes XMP cleanup. | These are metadata, but removing EXIF alone does not remove them. |
| APP13 IPTC/Photoshop IRB | Remove if the policy includes IPTC or Photoshop metadata. | This is a distinct metadata category. |
| APP11 JUMBF/C2PA | Remove only if the policy calls for removing this provenance-related data. | It is separate from EXIF and may be important to provenance workflows. |
| COM comments | Remove if comments are in scope. | Comments are another segment category that may carry user-supplied text. |
| APP2 ICC profile | Usually preserve unless the product has a specific reason not to. | Color-space metadata can affect color rendition; ExifTool’s FAQ cautions against discarding it indiscriminately: ExifTool FAQ. |
| APP0 JFIF, coding tables, frame headers, compressed image data | Preserve. | These are not targets in the example metadata-removal policy described by the repository. |
The repository describes a policy that removes APP1 EXIF, XMP and Extended XMP; APP11 JUMBF/C2PA; APP13 IPTC/Photoshop IRB; and COM comments, while preserving APP0 JFIF, APP2 ICC, coding tables, frame headers, and image data. That is one implementation’s policy, not a universal definition of “strip EXIF.”

How a byte-level JPEG edit works
- Validate the input. Check that the byte sequence is a supported JPEG and reject malformed or unsupported input safely instead of attempting a best-effort rewrite that could corrupt it.
- Walk JPEG structure, not arbitrary byte matches. Parse marker segments according to JPEG framing and their declared lengths, with bounds checks before reading or copying each segment.
- Classify segments using the chosen policy. Omit only the metadata markers the product intends to remove. Keep non-target segments, including ICC profiles if color preservation is required.
- Copy retained bytes unchanged. Preserve the compressed image data rather than decoding it to pixels and encoding a new JPEG. Handle the transition into the entropy-coded data using JPEG-aware parsing; do not keep treating every byte as an ordinary marker segment.
- Verify the output. Confirm that the resulting JPEG opens, inspect the metadata categories relevant to the policy, and test that retained image bytes are unchanged where the implementation promises that guarantee.
A naive scan for FF E1 is not a sufficient parser. Marker-like byte patterns can occur within image data, where JPEG marker parsing rules matter. Correct handling also depends on validating lengths and defining behavior for malformed input and JPEG-specific edge cases.

For EXIF-only manipulation, a library may be the simpler choice. The piexifjs Functions documentation lists load, dump, insert, and remove(jpegData). Its documented input forms include JPEG strings beginning with data:image/jpeg;base64,, JPEG start bytes, or Exif. The cited API documentation establishes an EXIF removal function; it does not establish that the function removes XMP, IPTC/Photoshop data, comments, or C2PA/JUMBF.

| Decision point | Hand-written byte-level parser | piexifjs |
|---|---|---|
| Metadata scope | Can implement a specified policy across multiple marker categories, if those cases are correctly handled. | Documented here as an EXIF API; removal of other metadata categories is not established by the cited documentation. |
| Input interface | Can be designed around byte arrays such as Uint8Array. |
Documentation describes JPEG string input formats, including a data URL prefix or JPEG start bytes. |
| Preservation behavior | Can copy non-target bytes unchanged, but that guarantee depends on the parser and its edge-case handling. | The cited API documentation does not establish byte-for-byte preservation of non-EXIF content. |
| Implementation burden | Requires correct marker parsing, bounds checks, an explicit policy, and meaningful fixtures. | Offers a documented EXIF removal method without requiring a custom segment parser. |
| EXIF editing caution | Removal-only behavior can avoid rewriting unrelated tags if implemented as segment omission. | The documentation warns that setting EXIF values does not verify that they reflect actual values; this is especially relevant when editing tags. |
ExifTool’s documentation also describes multiple JPEG metadata families, including ICC and Photoshop-related information; its FAQ notes that color-space metadata may be needed to preserve rendered color. See ExifTool JPEG tag documentation and the ExifTool FAQ. These references support treating ICC and other APP segments separately from EXIF, rather than assuming every APP segment is disposable.

“Without re-encoding” is a testable claim about what the program preserves. Tests should distinguish the image data from metadata removal and should cover the failure modes the parser is designed to handle.

For a removal-only workflow, avoid changing unrelated EXIF values or rebuilding metadata unless that is explicitly part of the feature. piexifjs’s warning about values set without validation is primarily relevant when writing tags, not evidence that its documented removal call performs that validation.
