For JPEGs, you can remove EXIF metadata without recompressing the image data. ExifTool edits JPEG metadata without modifying the encoded image data, and jpegtran can remove metadata while performing lossless JPEG operations. The exact result depends on the tool and format: removing metadata changes the file, and “no quality loss” means preserving image data—not keeping every byte of the original file.
What “no re-encoding” means
JPEG image data is compressed. A workflow that decodes and recompresses that data can change it and reduce image quality. Metadata editing is a separate operation: ExifTool documents that it does not modify JPEG image data when editing metadata (ExifTool FAQ). This supports a no-recompression claim for the documented JPEG operation; it does not guarantee that every app, file format, or metadata block behaves identically.

Removing EXIF does not make the whole file byte-for-byte identical. The metadata is part of the file, so deleting it changes the file contents. The relevant goal is to preserve the JPEG image data while removing the metadata you do not want.
Remove metadata with ExifTool while protecting color information
ExifTool documents metadata deletion and notes that color-space information may be needed to preserve how an image is rendered. Its FAQ demonstrates removing metadata while preserving the ICC profile and restoring color-space tags (ExifTool FAQ). That makes color handling an important part of a cautious JPEG cleanup—not a reason to assume every metadata field should be removed.

ExifTool’s general documentation covers its metadata-editing options (ExifTool Application Documentation). Choose the deletion and preservation options for the file and metadata you intend to handle; the FAQ example is a JPEG approach, not a universal command for every image format or application.
Use jpegtran for a JPEG-specific alternative
jpegtran works on compressed JPEG data without fully decoding it, and its manual describes removing metadata while performing lossless transformations. The manual states that its transformations are lossless; that claim applies to jpegtran’s JPEG transformations, not to arbitrary metadata-removal tools or other file formats (Mozilla / MozJPEG jpegtran manual).

Check the result before deleting the original
- Keep a source copy. ExifTool preserves originals by default when writing, appending
_originalto the original filename (ExifTool Application Documentation). - Inspect the output metadata. Use a metadata-reading tool to confirm that the fields you meant to remove are gone and that any color information you chose to preserve remains.
- Open the cleaned JPEG. Check that it displays as expected, including its colors. Do not discard the source copy until you have confirmed the output.
This workflow is specifically grounded in JPEG documentation. For another image format, or an app whose behavior is not documented, verify that it preserves the encoded image data rather than assuming that “remove metadata” means “no re-encoding.”
