DeWalt uses more than one trimmer head, and line size and loading instructions differ by model. For the DCST922 QuickLoad head, use the model-specific steps below; for another trimmer, check its manual before loading line.
Before you start: check the model and line
Find the model number on the trimmer and confirm the head type in its manual. The DCST922 and DCST925 manuals specify 0.080-inch (2.0 mm) line and identify DWO1DT801 and DWO1DT802 as replacement line models. The DCST922 manual warns that other line sizes can reduce performance, damage the tool, or cause injury. Check the manual for your exact model before buying line: DCST922 manual and DCST925 manual.

Do not assume that a line size or winding method listed for one DeWalt head applies to another. For example, DEWALT’s DCST972 product page specifies dual 0.080-inch line and also says the trimmer works with DEWALT 0.095-inch line; that model has its own reloading instructions: DCST972 product details.
How to reload a DCST922 QuickLoad head
- Make the trimmer safe. Turn it off and remove the battery pack before touching the head. The DCST922 manual warns about accidental start-up during service.
- Cut the line. Cut no more than 20 feet of 0.080-inch (2.0 mm) line.
- Align the head. Turn the spool housing until its eyelets line up with the arrow on the spool grip cover.
- Feed the line through. Push one end through an eyelet and out the opposite eyelet. Adjust it so both ends are the same length.
- Wind the line. Hold the spool cap steady and turn the spool grip cover counterclockwise.
- Stop at the right length. Leave about five inches of line extending from each side. If line extends beyond the cutting blade, trim it back to the blade’s length.
Use the arrow on the head to confirm alignment and winding direction. These instructions are for the DCST922 QuickLoad arrangement, not every DeWalt trimmer.

Why the loading steps vary by model
DeWalt’s QuickLoad support instructions give a maximum loading length of 25 feet and describe aligning the eyelets with the arrow, feeding line through until both sides are even, then winding counterclockwise until about five inches remain on each side. That support article names the DCST920, DCST970, and DCST991: QuickLoad line-replacement instructions.
Compatibility information can also depend on the specific head. DEWALT’s DWO1DT995 compatibility page lists the DCST920, DCST925, DCST970, DCST990, and DCST991. It says that head can use line up to 0.095 inch if it is spiral-shaped with smooth, round edges: DWO1DT995 compatibility details. Those specifications should not be treated as a blanket allowance for other models or heads.

If you cannot identify the head or model
Look up the trimmer in DEWALT’s service documentation by model or part number; the type number may also be needed. If the head has been replaced, verify the head’s own markings and compatibility as well as the trimmer model. DEWALT provides model and part-number lookup through its service documentation page.
Reload the head or replace it?
If the head is intact and simply out of line, reloading it avoids replacing the assembly. If it is worn or damaged, DEWALT describes the DWZSTH999 Quickload replacement spool head as accepting 20 feet of 0.080- or 0.095-inch line and as compatible with all DEWALT cordless string trimmers. Confirm the fit for your exact tool and head before purchasing: DWZSTH999 product details.
