The right way to restring a BLACK+DECKER trimmer depends on its model and spool design. Before opening the head, disconnect power, identify whether the spool uses one line, two lines, or bulk line on an auto-feed spool, then check the model manual for the correct line size and winding directions. BLACK+DECKER says to “use only the size and type of line recommended in your manual.”
Before you open the trimmer head
- Make it safe: Unplug a corded trimmer or remove the battery before opening the head or handling the spool.
- Find the model number: Look it up in BLACK+DECKER support if you do not have the manual. The model determines the correct line and compatible replacement spool.
- Identify the spool design: Check whether yours is a single-line spool, a dual-line spool with two winding sections, or an auto-feed spool intended for bulk line. Use the instructions for that design; the winding steps are not interchangeable.
Follow the arrow molded into the spool for the winding direction. In every design, wind neatly and evenly, without crossing the line, leaving it loose, or filling past the spool’s limit.

How to rewind a documented dual-line spool
This is BLACK+DECKER’s procedure for its documented dual-line spool. Your model manual takes precedence if its head differs.

- Unplug the trimmer or remove its battery.
- Press the housing tabs, remove the cover, and lift out the empty spool. Remove any old line.
- Feed about 2 cm of line into a slot in the spool’s upper section. Wind in the direction of the arrow, keeping the line in neat layers rather than crossing it.
- When the line reaches the spool recesses, cut it and park the end in the slots on one side of the spool.
- Repeat with a second line on the lower section, then park its end in unused slots.
- Refit the spool according to the model instructions. Before operating, release both line ends from their parking slots and confirm both spool sections contain line.
How to load bulk line on an auto-feed spool
Use this separate process only for an auto-feed spool designed to be rewound with bulk line.

- Disconnect power, remove the cover and spool, and discard the old line.
- Insert about 12 mm (1/2 inch) of new line into the hole in the spool.
- Wind snugly and evenly in the arrow’s direction until the line reaches the rim notches. Do not overfill.
- Route the line through the eyelet in the spool hub. Keep tension on the line while placing the spool in the hub, and check that no line is trapped underneath.
- Refit the cover. Use only the line size and type specified in the manual for your trimmer model.
Choose line or a replacement spool by model
BLACK+DECKER does not specify one line size for every trimmer. Its product listings show different sizes and compatibility lists, so check the manual or the manufacturer’s listing for your exact model before buying.

These are examples, not a universal fit guide. A prewound spool must match the trimmer model, while bulk line must match the specified diameter and type. If the model is unknown, do not choose a spool based on line diameter alone.

If the line will not feed
BLACK+DECKER describes its AFS mechanism as using centrifugal force to monitor line use and feed more as the cutting line shortens. If line does not advance, inspect the winding before replacing the head: poorly wound or trapped line can prevent feeding.

- Disconnect power before removing the cover or spool.
- Check that the line is laid in even layers and has not crossed or loosened.
- Look for line caught beneath the spool or routed incorrectly through the hub eyelet.
- If needed, remove and rewind the line using the instructions for the spool design and model.
