How to Stream With Apple Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS)

Apple LL-HLS needs coordinated support from the packager, origin, HTTP delivery path, and player. Learn the implementation steps, Apple’s part-duration guidance, and how to test common failure points.

To stream with Apple Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS), your packager must publish partial media segments and the HLS origin and HTTP delivery path must support LL-HLS playlist requests, including blocking reloads. Compatible players can then follow the live edge without waiting for a full segment and repeated playlist-polling cycles. A player setting alone cannot make an ordinary HLS stream low-latency.

This is a delivery-protocol workflow: it requires an LL-HLS-capable packager, origin, cache or CDN, and player. Apple’s guidance includes a recommended one-second part target, but actual latency depends on the end-to-end deployment. The steps below cover the implementation and the checks that matter.

What changes when you use LL-HLS?

Both ordinary live HLS and LL-HLS deliver HLS playlists and media over HTTP. The key difference is that LL-HLS makes partial segments available before their parent segment is complete, and coordinates playlist and media requests so a player can advance sooner. The media, playlist, origin, HTTP caches or CDN, and player must work together; partial segments alone do not guarantee lower latency.

Area Ordinary live HLS Apple LL-HLS
Media availability The player generally waits for complete segments to appear. The packager publishes partial segments as they become available, within the parent-segment timeline.
Playlist updates Clients commonly request playlist updates repeatedly to discover new media. Blocking playlist reload lets the server hold a request until the requested playlist state exists.
Delivery requirements Requires compatible HLS packaging and HTTP delivery. Also requires LL-HLS server behavior, including blocking requests and correct handling of partial media and hints.
Playback behavior Uses ordinary HLS live playback behavior. A compatible client can follow partial segments; Apple says clients may fall back to ordinary-latency playback when a required server capability is absent.

Apple’s LL-HLS supplement explains the protocol behavior; Apple’s authoring specification supplies device-facing playlist requirements. Apple says the LL-HLS rules were moved into the HLS specification in 2020, and the supplement now serves as explanatory guidance. The authoring specification’s search-result revision history extends through June 26, 2025, and says LL-HLS must meet the profile in HLS2 revision 7 or later. Check Apple’s current HLS specification for exact edge-case requirements before deployment.

What you need before implementation

  • A packager that emits LL-HLS correctly. It must publish partial segments, update playlists as media becomes available, and preserve segment timing across renditions.
  • An LL-HLS-capable origin and delivery path. The origin and any HTTP cache or CDN must support the required playlist and media request behavior. Apple expects LL-HLS to be delivered through CDNs and other HTTP caches; support by a specific provider must be verified rather than assumed.
  • A compatible player. The player must understand LL-HLS playlists and their request behavior. If a required capability is missing, Apple says a client can fall back to ordinary-latency playback.
  • Aligned media renditions. Variant streams need coordinated timing and boundaries so a player can move between bitrates without losing its place.
  • Operational visibility. You need to inspect playlist contents and request timing through the real delivery path, not just confirm that a playlist file loads.

How to publish an LL-HLS stream

1. Author a valid live HLS presentation

Start with the ordinary HLS presentation and make sure segment durations are represented accurately, renditions are aligned, and Apple device authoring requirements are met. Apple’s authoring specification includes requirements such as at least six segments in a live playlist, gzip delivery for playlists, and correctly declared media formats. Check the current specification for the full set of requirements; do not treat those examples as a complete validation checklist.

2. Package and publish partial segments

Configure the packager to expose partial media as it becomes available while retaining the intended parent-segment timeline. Keep variant boundaries synchronized so clients can switch renditions cleanly. If you insert ads, preserve ad boundaries, discontinuities, and key rotation consistently across the partial and completed segments, as described in Apple’s LL-HLS guidance.

3. Advertise the LL-HLS server behavior in playlists

The playlist must describe the LL-HLS capabilities the server actually supports. Apple’s LL-HLS supplement identifies these tags: EXT-X-SERVER-CONTROL, EXT-X-PART-INF, EXT-X-PART, EXT-X-PRELOAD-HINT, EXT-X-RENDITION-REPORT, and EXT-X-SKIP.

  • EXT-X-PRELOAD-HINT points to an expected upcoming media resource so a client can request it before it is ready.
  • EXT-X-RENDITION-REPORT reports recent sequence and part state for another rendition to help a client switch bitrates with fewer discovery round trips.
  • EXT-X-SKIP is used for playlist delta updates where supported.

Only advertise features that your server and delivery path implement. A tag in a playlist is not evidence that the corresponding request will work through the deployed cache or CDN.

4. Implement blocking reload and delivery directives

With blocking playlist reload, a client can ask the server to wait for a future playlist state instead of repeatedly polling while nothing has changed. Apple defines these request parameters in its LL-HLS supplement:

  • _HLS_msn=<M> asks the server to wait until the playlist includes media sequence M or later.
  • _HLS_part=<N> asks for a specific partial segment and requires _HLS_msn.
  • _HLS_skip=YES or _HLS_skip=v2 requests a playlist delta update.

The origin must hold a blocking request until the requested state exists and return the appropriate response. Validate how these parameters pass through any intermediary caches: a cache that serves a stale playlist or mishandles a waiting request can defeat the behavior the player needs.

5. Set part duration and hold-back for the network path

Apple’s HLS Authoring Specification for Apple Devices gives these tuning rules:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Part target duration: it must be no shorter than the expected 95th-percentile (P95) round-trip time between clients and server. Apple says it should be at least three times that P95 and recommends a one-second part target duration.
  • Part hold-back: it must be at least three times the part target duration.

These constraints mean the one-second recommendation is not a universal setting to apply without measuring the expected client-to-server path. If the target duration is too short for the network’s P95 round-trip time, requests may not complete reliably. Tune against the actual audience and delivery path, then validate playback behavior rather than relying on the configured value alone.

6. Make preload hints safe to follow

A preload hint forecasts the next partial-segment resource, allowing a client to request it before it is available. Apple’s WWDC20 session Discover HLS Blocking Preload Hints describes the hint as the URL of the next partial segment the packager expects to appear. Treat that URL as a forecast, not immutable content: a changed segmentation plan may alter the expected resource or prevent its publication. The origin and player must tolerate that outcome rather than treating a hint mismatch as a fatal stream error.

  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

7. Keep rendition reports and cross-rendition timing current

Publish rendition reports with the recent media-sequence and part state of other renditions. This gives the client information it can use to switch bitrates without an extra discovery cycle. Check that the reported state corresponds to media actually available through the same delivery path; an up-to-date origin playlist is not enough if an intermediary serves stale data.

8. Offer playlist delta updates where appropriate

Apple says services with live playlist windows longer than two minutes should offer playlist delta updates. If you offer delta updates and use EXT-X-DATERANGE, Apple says to use CAN-SKIP-DATERANGES=YES. Confirm that the server’s skip behavior and the client’s playlist interpretation agree, particularly when date ranges matter to your application.

Validate latency through the complete delivery path

Test using the deployed origin, cache or CDN, and player. Apple’s guidance establishes the need for this cooperation but does not certify a particular CDN or packager. A successful origin-only test does not establish that tune-in or blocking behavior will work after caching and routing are involved.

  1. Inspect playlists and media availability. Confirm that partial segments appear as packaging progresses, durations are accurately represented, and variant timelines remain aligned.
  2. Exercise blocking reloads. Send requests using the expected _HLS_msn and, where appropriate, _HLS_part values. Verify that requests wait for the requested playlist state and complete when it becomes available.
  3. Test preload-hint requests. Check that a request for a hinted resource behaves correctly before and after the part becomes available, including when the packager changes its segmentation plan.
  4. Check caches and tune-in freshness. Verify that playlist updates, blocking requests, and partial media are not made stale or delayed by intermediary HTTP caches.
  5. Test rendition changes and discontinuities. Switch between bitrates and check that reports, segment boundaries, ads, discontinuities, and key rotation remain consistent.
  6. Measure end-to-end delay. Measure from the live event to playback on the actual player and network conditions you care about. Apple’s WWDC20 overview described the extensions presented there as combining HLS quality and scalability with a delay of two seconds or less. That is a statement about the 2020 presentation, not a guaranteed result or a universal measurement for every deployment.

Common LL-HLS problems and fixes

  • Playback starts, but latency remains like ordinary HLS: the packager may be publishing only complete segments, or the player may not be following partial segments. Inspect the playlist and verify that the packaging and player support the intended LL-HLS profile.
  • Blocking requests time out or return stale playlists: the origin may not implement blocking reload correctly, or an intermediary cache may mishandle the request. Test _HLS_msn and _HLS_part through the production delivery path and check cache behavior.
  • Requests for hinted media fail: a preload hint is a forecast and can change when segmentation plans change. Ensure the packager, origin, and player can handle a hinted resource that is not published as expected.
  • Players fall back to higher-latency playback: a required server capability may be missing or not visible along the delivery path. Check server-control behavior and the required LL-HLS playlist and request support; Apple documents fallback to ordinary-latency playback in this situation.
  • Bitrate switching stalls or jumps: renditions may not share aligned boundaries, or rendition reports may not reflect current sequence and part state. Validate alignment and report freshness across variants.
  • Ads, discontinuities, or encryption transitions break playback: partial and complete segments may not preserve the same boundaries or key-rotation behavior. Check ad insertion, discontinuity signaling, and key rotation across the entire parent-segment timeline.
  • Playlist deltas fail around date ranges: if the service offers delta updates and uses EXT-X-DATERANGE, check Apple’s requirement to use CAN-SKIP-DATERANGES=YES.
