Steam Frame can stream PC games over your home Wi-Fi, but Valve says that connection tends to be more congested and less reliable than the included wireless adapter’s direct link. For the usual setup, connect and pair the adapter with your PC, then select Stream on a game in the headset’s Steam Library.
Choose how Steam Frame connects to your PC
There are two paths: use the included wireless adapter for a direct PC-to-headset link, or stream through your existing home Wi-Fi network. Valve describes the adapter as a dedicated, plug-and-play 6 GHz connection for low-latency streaming. Steam Frame’s dual radios let that link carry audio and visuals while the other radio connects to Wi-Fi.

Home Wi-Fi is an available alternative, not a promise that a particular router, Wi-Fi generation, distance, or channel will perform like the direct link. The official guidance cited here does not establish a router model or Wi-Fi 6E as a Steam Frame requirement.

Set up the included adapter and start a game
- Plug the included Steam Frame wireless adapter into the PC. Valve recommends using a USB 3 port when possible.
- Launch SteamVR. Accept the prompt to install the adapter driver.
- Follow the pairing prompt. Enter the pairing code shown in the headset when asked.
- In the headset, open the Steam Library, select the PC game you want to play, and choose Stream.
For ordinary gameplay, start streaming from a game in the headset’s Steam Library. Valve describes the direct-PC option in the VR dashboard as primarily intended for development.

If the pairing prompt does not appear
- Check that the headset is logged in to the same Steam account as the PC.
- Valve’s setup instructions say to opt the PC Steam client into the Steam Beta Update and reboot if necessary when pairing does not appear.
- Valve also recommends beta branches on the headset, Steam client, and SteamVR for the latest updates. Beta participation and setup instructions can change, so consult Valve’s current Steam Frame setup documentation rather than assuming a beta branch is always required.
Improve a home Wi-Fi stream
If you want to use the home network, Steam Support’s general Steam Link guidance recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi instead of the more congested 2.4 GHz band. It also warns that simultaneous wireless traffic between the PC and router, and between the router and streaming device, can interfere and make streaming choppy. Steam Support’s network guidance covers these general points.
- If the stream stutters, reduce other wireless activity on the network and try the headset closer to the access point. Moving closer is general troubleshooting advice, not a Valve performance guarantee.
- Where practical, connect the gaming PC to the router with Ethernet while leaving the headset wireless. Steam Remote Play’s published VR minimum requirements list a wired PC-to-router connection, a 5 GHz channel, and a Wi-Fi 5 router. Those requirements appear in a section naming Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro as supported headsets; they are general Steam Link VR guidance, not a Steam Frame-specific requirement. - Try the included adapter if home Wi-Fi remains unreliable. Valve’s guidance favors the direct connection, but does not provide a router-specific setting or guarantee that a particular home network will match it.
What Valve says about Foveated Streaming
Valve says Steam Frame’s Foveated Streaming optimizes detail where the user is looking and “typically offers over a 10x improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth.” That is Valve’s vendor-reported claim; the cited product information does not provide a test protocol, and it is not an independently measured comparison. Valve’s Steam Frame product information describes the feature.

Do you need to buy a router or cable?
The wireless adapter is included, so it is not an extra purchase for the direct-connection setup. A Wi-Fi 6E router is not established as necessary for Steam Frame in the Valve pages cited here. Consider changing home-network equipment only if you specifically want to stream over Wi-Fi and have a network limitation to address; no router model is endorsed by the cited sources.

An Ethernet cable may be useful if you want to wire the PC to your router, but the wired-PC recommendation comes from Steam Remote Play’s general VR requirements section for Meta Quest headsets, not a Steam Frame-specific requirement.
