To stream a recorded lesson with subtitles using OBS, add the recording as an OBS VLC Video source, enable its subtitle track, and send the scene to YouTube Live through OBS. That puts subtitles into the outgoing picture, where they remain visible to viewers. It does not by itself create YouTube’s viewer-toggleable closed captions (CC); those require a separate caption-data workflow.
Choose the subtitle experience you need
There are two different ways subtitles can reach viewers. Choose before setting up the stream, because the OBS subtitle-track method and YouTube’s live-caption workflow produce different results.

| Method | What viewers see | What it requires |
|---|---|---|
| Subtitles displayed in the video picture | Text is part of the image and stays visible to everyone. | An OBS source that renders the lesson’s subtitle track, or subtitles rendered into the video before streaming. |
| YouTube live captions | Captions are supplied as caption data for YouTube’s live-caption experience. | An embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 caption workflow or supported software that sends caption data to YouTube over HTTP POST. YouTube says live captions must be sent to it as caption data; visible text alone is not enough. YouTube’s live caption requirements describe the supported approaches. |
If your goal is simply to make the lesson readable while it plays, use picture subtitles. If viewers must be able to switch captions on and off with YouTube’s CC control, arrange and test the separate caption-data route.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrepare OBS and the lesson file
Install the required media support
OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS documents that you need 64-bit VLC as well. The OBS documentation describes a selectable subtitle track but does not specify every supported subtitle-file format, so verify that your particular lesson and subtitle file work together before scheduling the event. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.

Add the recording as a VLC Video source
- In OBS, choose the scene for the lesson. In the Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video.
- In the source properties, add or select the recorded lesson media.
- Turn on Subtitles Enabled, then select the subtitle track that contains the lesson text.
- Confirm the picture and subtitles appear in the OBS preview. Check that the text is legible and timed correctly against speech throughout the recording, not only at the start.
OBS describes the VLC Video source’s subtitle property as controlling whether subtitles are displayed. This is picture rendering in the OBS scene; it does not establish that caption data is being sent separately to YouTube.
If the subtitle track does not render as intended
Do not assume every subtitle file or codec is compatible simply because OBS exposes a subtitle-track setting. Test with the exact media file, subtitle file, and OBS installation you will use. If the track cannot be read reliably, create a version of the lesson with subtitles rendered into the picture, or build a timed text overlay in the OBS scene. These are alternative workflows, so rehearse them with the complete recording to check synchronization, appearance, and scene behavior.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder live stream in Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with viewers.
- Use RTMPS where available; YouTube recommends it. Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR), use a keyframe interval of 2 seconds (do not exceed 4 seconds), and choose a resolution and frame rate suited to the lesson and your available upload connection. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Set video bitrate according to the selected output and connection. As a starting example, YouTube’s cited settings table recommends H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of stable streaming; its guidance varies with codec, resolution, frame rate, and upload capacity.
- Start the OBS stream and check the Live Control Room preview before the public event. Confirm that the lesson picture, subtitle timing, and audio are correct.
Rehearse before teaching
Run a complete test before relying on the setup for a lesson. YouTube recommends testing, checking the Live Control Room preview, monitoring audio and video, and checking the watch page on mobile devices. An unlisted stream can be useful for rehearsal. Follow YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- Inspect subtitle timing at several points, including any scene changes or pauses.
- Check that the text is readable in the viewer-facing stream, not just in the OBS preview.
- If you need YouTube CC, verify that the caption-data path works independently; picture subtitles are not proof that live captions are active.
- Check playback and audio from the watch page, including on a phone if viewers are likely to use one.
- After the lesson, end the event in YouTube Live Control Room and stop the encoder when the event has ended.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No subtitles appear in OBS | Subtitles are disabled, the wrong track is selected, or the source cannot read the media’s subtitle track. | Reopen VLC Video source properties, enable Subtitles Enabled, and select the intended track. Test the exact files; if they still fail, render subtitles into the video or use a timed OBS overlay. |
| Subtitles appear in OBS but not as YouTube CC | The text is part of the picture, not caption data sent to YouTube. | Set up a supported embedded-caption or HTTP caption-data workflow and verify it separately with YouTube’s live caption requirements. |
| Subtitle timing or legibility is wrong | The selected track may not match the recording, or its timing and display have not been checked in the viewer output. | Confirm the intended track and rehearse the full lesson. Adjust or replace the subtitle workflow before the public event. |
| YouTube preview is missing or unstable | The encoder connection, stream key, or stream settings may be incorrect, or the upload connection may not sustain the selected output. | Recheck the event’s stream URL and key, use YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, and test at the intended resolution and bitrate before going live. |
Copyright and lesson rights
Before streaming, make sure you have the rights or permission needed for the lesson video, audio, and any included music or other material. A private or unlisted rehearsal does not establish that you have permission for a public stream. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and the rights attached to all media used in the lesson.
