Yes. You can use FFmpeg on a Linux server to read a video file at real-time speed and send it to YouTube Live; OBS is not required. Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then configure FFmpeg with that stream’s ingest URL and key. Use the RTMPS URL YouTube provides when available, and test the preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast.
What you need before starting
- A Linux server with the video and audio file you want to broadcast, enough upload capacity for the chosen stream settings, and FFmpeg built with the required input, muxer, and encoder support.
- A YouTube channel that can create a live stream. YouTube’s setup and channel requirements are described in its encoder livestream setup guide.
- The ingest URL and stream key for the stream you create or select in YouTube Studio. They are specific to your stream, not universal constants.
Do not put a real stream key in a public script, article, screenshot, or command you may leave in shell history. Treat it like a password: keep it out of shared files and logs, and rotate it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
Create the YouTube stream and get its credentials
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or select an existing one.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Keep both private. Use the actual URL YouTube displays rather than copying an endpoint from an example.
- If you schedule the broadcast, be ready to start the encoder first. Once YouTube shows the incoming preview, confirm the scheduled broadcast by clicking Go live in Live Control Room.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted form of RTMP. Its guidance says the protocol must be rtmps, the server and path must be valid, and the connection uses port 443. The URL shown in Live Control Room is the authority for your stream; see YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guidance.
Check FFmpeg and choose a compatible output
Having FFmpeg installed does not guarantee that a particular codec or RTMPS client support is available in that build. Check the installed build before choosing a command. For example, ffmpeg -version reports build configuration, while ffmpeg -encoders lists available encoders. Select an encoder your build actually provides and confirm that it can produce the format you intend to send.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance accepts H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For SDR, its advanced recommendations include progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, and Rec. 709. Stereo audio guidance is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps. See the full YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for the mode you plan to use.
Choose resolution and frame rate based on the source, encoder support, and reliable upload capacity. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; do not assume these values apply to other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and using a representative video-and-audio test. Its live input is automatically transcoded into output formats for viewers.

Send the file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s documented real-time file-to-RTMP pattern is ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. That is a generic protocol example, not a tested YouTube command or a complete universal encoder configuration. The template below shows where the pieces go; replace every placeholder and select options compatible with your file, installed build, YouTube’s current guidance, and available upload bandwidth.
ffmpeg -re -i "<LOCAL_MEDIA_FILE>"
-c:v <VIDEO_ENCODER_SUPPORTED_BY_YOUR_BUILD>
<VIDEO_OPTIONS_FOR_YOUR_CHOSEN_MODE>
-c:a <SUPPORTED_AUDIO_ENCODER>
<AUDIO_OPTIONS>
-f flv "<RTMPS_URL_AND_STREAM_KEY_FROM_LIVE_CONTROL_ROOM>"
In this template, -re reads the file at real-time speed rather than sending it as fast as the server can process it. The input path must point to a file the server can read. The video and audio options are deliberately placeholders: set the video codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio parameters to values supported by your FFmpeg build and suitable for the source. Configure the output using the URL and key YouTube gave you; do not assume that every URL is constructed by appending a key in the same way.

Protect the credential when you turn the template into a real command or service. Avoid committing it to source control or placing it in a world-readable script. A secret-management approach suitable for your server is safer than pasting a key into a command that may be retained in shell history. FFmpeg’s official documentation describes the generic real-time input pattern in its protocol documentation; the sources do not establish one complete command that works across all Linux distributions, media files, codec builds, and RTMPS clients.
Verify the preview, stream health, and ending
- Start FFmpeg and watch Live Control Room for the incoming preview. For a scheduled stream, click Go live after the preview appears.
- Test with representative movement and audio, not just a still frame or silent section. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and adjust the configuration if the preview or health status shows a problem.
- When the broadcast should end, stop FFmpeg from sending content and use Live Control Room to confirm or end the event as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not treat that as a guarantee for streams lasting 12 hours or longer.
Common problems and fixes
- No preview appears: Confirm FFmpeg is still running, the source file can be read, and the stream URL and key came from the selected Live Control Room stream. Check the FFmpeg output for connection or input errors.
- RTMPS connection or TLS failure: Verify that you are using the RTMPS URL YouTube supplied, including its server and path, and that the client supports RTMPS and port 443. Do not substitute an assumed endpoint.
- YouTube reports an encoder or stream-health issue: Check codec, CBR, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio settings against YouTube’s current table. Test a lower mode if the server’s upload connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate.
- Video or audio is missing: Check that the input contains the expected streams and that the chosen encoders and mappings suit that file. The template intentionally does not assume that every source contains both video and audio in the same layout.
- The stream disconnects or the file ends: A single FFmpeg process reading one file is not, by itself, a guarantee of automatic reconnection, continuous looping, or seamless transitions. Those behaviors depend on configuration and supervision not established by the basic file-to-RTMP workflow.
Rights and YouTube policy still apply
Streaming a prerecorded file does not change the rights or platform rules that apply to its contents. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream requirements before going live. Avoid assuming that permission to use a track or video in one context automatically covers a public livestream.
