You can use a phone in a YouTube Live setup, but YouTube’s standard mobile app instructions do not document selecting a saved video file and looping it. To stream prerecorded video from a phone, you need an encoder app that explicitly supports local-file playback and looping, plus a phone and connection that can sustain the stream. What you need to know before trying this
YouTube documents two different workflows: starting a mobile live stream, generally using the phone’s camera, and connecting an encoder to YouTube Live with a stream URL and key. Its standard mobile instructions do not describe choosing a video stored on the phone as the live source. An encoder app may offer that capability, but YouTube’s documentation does not verify file playback, looping, unattended operation, or 24-hour reliability in any particular app.
So the practical answer is conditional: use a mobile encoder only after confirming that its current version can play and loop a local video and remain connected as needed on your specific phone. Test it with an unlisted broadcast before relying on it. If you need uninterrupted playback without the phone staying on, use a cloud-based workflow instead.
Check whether your channel can go live from mobile
YouTube’s mobile live-stream requirements apply regardless of whether you are in India. Before setting up an encoder, check that your channel meets the mobile eligibility rules:

- A verified channel.
- No live-streaming restriction on the channel during the past 90 days.
- Live streaming enabled.
- A supported Android or iOS device.
First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance also sets a minimum age of 16. Check the current YouTube mobile live-streaming requirements and live-streaming basics before planning a broadcast. A location list shown for a specific YouTube feature, such as Playables, should not be treated as a definitive list of countries where ordinary mobile live streaming is available.
Choose a phone-based prerecorded-video workflow
Why the YouTube app alone may not be enough
The standard YouTube mobile live flow is not documented as a way to pick a saved video and broadcast it on repeat. If you want prerecorded playback from a phone, you need a separate encoder app or service that supports local media as an input. YouTube’s encoder help page lists mobile-capable third-party apps, including Larix Broadcaster for Android and iOS, but that listing does not establish that a listed app can play local files, loop them, run unattended, or stay reliable for a full day.
Verify the encoder before you rely on it
Before installing or configuring an app for a long broadcast, check its current documentation or ask its maker whether it supports all of the functions you need. In particular, verify:

- Local video-file input from your phone, rather than only camera capture.
- Continuous looping, including what happens when the file reaches its end.
- Background operation and whether Android or iOS may suspend the app.
- Reconnection behavior after a network interruption or YouTube disconnect.
- Supported video and audio formats, plus any file-size or duration limits.
- How the app behaves under sustained heat, battery use, and mobile-network conditions on your model of phone.
These are app- and device-specific questions, not capabilities established by YouTube’s encoder listing. Run a short unlisted test using the same phone, file, network, and settings you plan to use for the real broadcast.
Connect an encoder to YouTube Live
- Enable live streaming. If this is the channel’s first live stream, enable it in YouTube and allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the live event. Choose an unlisted test if you are checking the setup privately.
- Get the connection details. In the Live Control Room, use the server URL and stream key provided for the event. In the encoder app, select its YouTube or custom RTMP connection option and enter the details as directed by the app.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to the key may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not post it publicly or share it with an untrusted app or person.
- Choose the video source and start the encoder. Select the local-file or media-playback source only if the app explicitly provides it, then enable looping if available. Start the encoder and wait for YouTube’s preview in the Live Control Room.
- Check the event before going public. Confirm that video and audio are present, the preview is stable, and the event is accessible as intended. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring streams; do not assume a successful connection proves the app can keep looping for 24 hours.

Plan for upload bandwidth and an unstable connection
Your upload connection must be able to carry the selected stream bitrate continuously. YouTube states: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” It recommends leaving 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. For example, the connection should have more upload capacity than the combined video and audio bitrate, not merely match it.

- Use the most reliable connection available to you and test it at the time and place you expect to stream.
- Monitor video and audio during the broadcast, especially after changing networks or encoder settings.
- Do not assume a particular Indian carrier, mobile plan, or Wi-Fi connection will sustain a 24-hour upload. The sources here do not establish India-specific coverage, data charges, or network uptime.
- Check whether the encoder retries after a disconnect and whether it resumes the file, restarts it, or requires manual action. YouTube’s instructions do not guarantee automatic restart or seamless continuity for a phone-based encoder.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance
If you need a complete YouTube archive, avoid treating one 24-hour broadcast as a reliable recording plan. YouTube says that a stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” This is archive guidance; it does not promise that a long stream will restart automatically or that back-to-back broadcasts will have no gap.
For an archive, plan shorter sessions and keep a separate local recording backup if the encoder and phone support it. Confirm how the chosen app handles recording while streaming, since that capability is not established by YouTube’s encoder documentation.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party material. Its help guidance says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match may cause a placeholder to appear, interrupt the stream, or terminate it.

You must have the necessary rights to stream the video and audio, including music, and comply with applicable law. Owning a downloaded copy or having permission to upload a video to YouTube does not by itself establish permission to retransmit it live. If a rights holder has licensed material for your stream, YouTube advises that the channel may need to be allowlisted through Content ID to avoid interruption. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams before broadcasting.

Troubleshooting a phone-based stream
YouTube does not show a preview
- Check that live streaming is enabled and that first-time activation has completed.
- Recheck the event’s server URL and stream key in the encoder. If you suspect the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Confirm that the encoder is actually sending data and that the event is still open in the Live Control Room.
The video does not play or loop
- Confirm that the app supports local-file playback and looping in its current version; a camera-only source will not play a saved recording.
- Check the file format and any app-specific duration or size limits with the app maker.
- Run an unlisted test through the end of the file to see whether playback repeats as expected.
The stream drops or becomes unstable
- Check available upload bandwidth against the total audio and video bitrate, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Test the connection from the actual streaming location. A phone’s signal bars alone do not establish that its upload can sustain the stream.
- Check the encoder’s reconnect settings and observe what happens to playback after a brief interruption; do not assume it resumes automatically.
The broadcast stops or audio/video is interrupted
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room for stream warnings or copyright notices.
- Review all video and audio rights, including music, and address any Content ID allowlisting needs with the rights holder and YouTube guidance.
- Check whether the phone or operating system suspended the encoder, or whether heat, power, or network conditions affected operation.

How many subscribers do I need to live stream on YouTube mobile?

Will YouTube save a 24-hour live stream?
