You can broadcast a prerecorded sermon as a YouTube Live stream by scheduling an event in YouTube Studio, then using FFmpeg on a Linux server to send the recording to YouTube’s ingest service. For a scheduled event, sending the file is not the final step: check the preview in Live Control Room and select Go live when you are ready to begin.
Before you start
Confirm that the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility well before the service. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips for current requirements.
Prepare the recording and server
Put the final sermon recording on a Linux machine that can stay powered on and connected for the entire broadcast. A VPS is optional; a suitable machine you control can also run FFmpeg. In either case, the connection needs enough sustained outbound capacity for the stream, and the server must remain available until the broadcast ends.
- Play the recording before broadcast and check its picture, sound, duration, and beginning and ending.
- Confirm that the file’s container and audio/video codecs are suitable for the output you plan to send. The right choice depends on the actual file; there is no single command that fits every recording.
- Keep the YouTube stream key private. YouTube treats it as the encoder’s password and address. Do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs; reset it if you believe it has been compromised. See YouTube’s streaming setup guidance.
Schedule the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule the stream. Scheduling gives you an upcoming watch page to share, and viewers can opt in to reminders. See YouTube’s guidance on scheduling a live stream.
- In the event’s stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. Use the RTMPS URL shown for that event if available; do not assume that a remembered or default RTMP address is the secure one.
- Set the event’s visibility, title, description, and other details in Studio, and verify the upcoming watch page is the one you intend to share.
Configure FFmpeg to send the sermon
Choose the output settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and must not exceed four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on the chosen resolution and frame rate; use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table rather than treating one bitrate as universal. RTMPS is YouTube’s secure extension to RTMP.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Decide whether the source can be sent without transcoding or needs to be converted to match the planned ingest settings. FFmpeg can read a file and write to a network output, but the right options depend on the source file, FFmpeg build, and event settings. Consult the FFmpeg documentation and test the actual setup with an unlisted or private event before a service. Do not assume a sample command for an unknown file will work unchanged.
Keep the key out of public command history and logs
Configure FFmpeg’s output with the event’s RTMPS URL and stream key using a method that keeps the secret private on your server. Avoid putting a real key in a command that will be saved in shell history or copied into public documentation. Restrict access to any configuration file containing it, and remove or rotate the key if it is exposed.

Test, start, and end the broadcast
- Start FFmpeg early enough to allow YouTube to receive the feed and show a preview in Live Control Room.
- Check the preview, audio, video, and event watch page before the scheduled start. Confirm the sermon is playing from the expected point.
- Check available outbound bandwidth. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload capacity and recommends leaving 20% headroom for other traffic.
- When the scheduled event is ready, select Go live in Live Control Room. Starting the encoder alone does not necessarily make the scheduled event live.
- Monitor picture and sound during the sermon. At the end, stop the encoder and end the stream in Studio following the current workflow.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on automatic archiving for a stream lasting 12 hours or more. Check the current Live Control Room guidance for event controls and behavior.
Rights to check before broadcast
YouTube’s livestream terms say live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and that the provider must have the necessary rights for the content, including music licensing rights. Review the recording’s sermon, worship or background music, slides, photographs, and any third-party video before airing. Owning the recording does not by itself establish permission to use every work included in it. See YouTube’s terms; licensing obligations can also depend on your jurisdiction and the specific material.

Common problems and fixes
- Live streaming is unavailable: verify the channel and check for restrictions. If this is the channel’s first enablement, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- No preview appears: confirm FFmpeg is running, the event-specific URL and key are correct, and the Linux server can reach the ingest service. Check server output for connection or authentication errors without publishing the key.
- YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bandwidth: compare the configured bitrate with the server’s sustained upload capacity, leave the recommended headroom, and reduce the output demands if the connection cannot sustain them.
- Video or audio is missing or incompatible: inspect the source codecs and container, then adjust the FFmpeg output to a supported format and the event’s chosen settings. Test again before the scheduled broadcast.
- The event page is scheduled but viewers do not see a live broadcast: check that the feed has reached the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room at the appropriate time.
- The key may have leaked: reset it in YouTube Studio and update the server’s private configuration with the replacement.
Or let it run in the cloud
