YouTube lists encoder streaming as one of its live methods, making an encoder-based workflow a practical way to send a video file or composed program. YouTube does not prescribe a special prerecorded-video setup, though: first confirm your channel can go live, clear the rights to every part of the video, and prepare the broadcast in YouTube Studio.
Check that your channel can go live
YouTube’s current guidance says a channel must be verified and have had no live-stream restrictions during the preceding 90 days. It also states that streamers must be at least 16 years old. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and getting-started guidance before planning a broadcast; platform requirements can change.

Encoder: a practical fit for a video file or composed program
For a prerecorded comparison, an encoder is a reasonable choice because it can send prepared video or a composed program to YouTube Live. This is a practical workflow inference, not a special method YouTube mandates for prerecorded content. YouTube’s help page identifies encoder streaming as an option but does not prescribe a particular encoder, computer, capture device, or technical setting for this use.

Other methods
YouTube also lists mobile, webcam, and console streaming. Those categories may suit a live camera-led presentation or a different existing setup, but the official guidance does not establish one method as best for every creator. Choose based on whether you need to play a finished file, add live commentary or overlays, or switch between sources—and on the equipment and software you already use.
Prepare the broadcast in YouTube Studio
- Plan the program. Decide whether viewers will see only the finished comparison or a presentation with live commentary, demonstrations, or other elements. Make the comparison’s criteria clear—for example, what you compared and why—rather than relying on product footage alone.
- Set up the live broadcast. Create the broadcast in YouTube Studio and provide a clear title and description. Choose the intended audience and visibility, and decide whether to archive the stream. These are useful production choices, not prerequisites established by YouTube’s live-start guidance.
- Connect the encoder. Follow the encoder’s and Studio’s on-screen instructions to connect your selected streaming method. The official sources reviewed do not establish a required bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, encoder, or device for this particular workflow, so do not treat an arbitrary setting as a YouTube rule.
- Test before going public. If your setup supports it, test playback privately or as an unlisted broadcast. Confirm the video and sound are present and that any commentary, graphics, and transitions appear as intended.
- Monitor the live broadcast. Keep YouTube Studio available for stream warnings or interruptions. If something goes wrong, check the dashboard and channel notices for the relevant cause rather than assuming the video file itself is the problem.
Clear rights to every part of the comparison
You are responsible for having the rights needed to use your live content, including music. YouTube’s Livestream terms require creators to have the necessary rights for live content on Google services, including music licensing rights.

Make the comparison meaningfully original
Copyright clearance and monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams as well as long-form videos and Shorts. Its reused-content rules look for significant original commentary, substantive changes, or educational or entertainment value when creators repurpose material. Permission alone does not establish that content meets those rules.
Give viewers your own analysis: state the comparison criteria, explain what the differences mean, and add useful context or demonstrations. Simply replaying retailer or manufacturer videos may raise reused-content concerns even when you have permission. YouTube’s policy includes critical reviews that use clips and edited footage with commentary as examples that may be allowed; that is not a guarantee that any particular broadcast will qualify for monetization. The policy’s July 15, 2025 update renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” to clarify its treatment of repetitive or mass-produced material; YouTube said that update did not change the reused-content policy.

Disclose brand relationships
If a brand influences the livestream in exchange for something of value—such as payment, a free product, or sponsorship—YouTube’s branded-content policy applies to live streams. Declare the paid promotion in Studio and make the viewer-facing disclosure clear and prominent. Read YouTube’s branded-content guidance. YouTube also requires compliance with applicable advertising policies and legal obligations; the platform guidance does not settle the legal disclosure requirements for every jurisdiction.

Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Check whether the channel is verified, whether live streaming is enabled, and whether any live-stream restriction applies. YouTube’s eligibility guidance specifies a restriction-free period of 90 days.
- The stream is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder: Check Studio for a third-party content warning. Review the video and audio for a match; if the material is licensed, contact the rights holder about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist.
- A claim appears after the broadcast: If you archived the stream, check the resulting Content ID notice. YouTube says archived live streams can receive claims after completion.
- The broadcast plays but raises monetization concerns: Review the reused-content policy separately from copyright status. Add original analysis and meaningful context; permission by itself is not a monetization guarantee.
- The video or audio does not appear as expected: Use a private or unlisted test where available, check the encoder and Studio status, and verify the selected source and audio in your setup. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not specify a universal encoder setting for this case.
