How to Stream Pre-Recorded Video to YouTube Live from a Cloud Server

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can stream a pre-recorded video to YouTube Live from a cloud server by creating or scheduling a YouTube broadcast, then running an encoder on the server that sends the video to YouTube’s ingestion URL with the broadcast’s stream key. The server—not your home computer—must keep the media file available, run the encoder, and maintain the outgoing connection. You can manage those pieces yourself or use a managed cloud service.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  • A video file stored where the cloud server can read it.
  • A cloud server with an encoder capable of reading that file and sending a live feed to YouTube. The appropriate server size depends on your file and workload; the available official guidance does not establish one size for every setup.
  • The event’s YouTube server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in public logs, screenshots, or source control.

A cloud server is a service you rent and administer, not a physical streaming device. In a DIY setup, you are responsible for the server, file availability, encoder process, network connection, and recovery if the process stops.

Set up the YouTube broadcast

  1. Open Live Control Room in YouTube Studio. Create a broadcast or schedule one for the intended date and time.
  2. Choose the audience and visibility. Set the event to public, private, or unlisted as appropriate. YouTube’s default privacy setting can vary by age, and you can change it for the event.
  3. Retrieve the connection details. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. Enter them into the encoder running on your server; keep the key private.
  4. Plan how the event starts. A scheduled broadcast and a running encoder are separate parts of the workflow. YouTube’s scheduled-stream instructions describe waiting for the preview and selecting “Go live.” Do not assume every scheduled event will begin automatically: behavior depends on the event and encoder configuration.

Configure and start the cloud encoder

  1. Make the file available to the server. Upload or otherwise place the media file where the encoder can access it. Check that the account running the encoder has permission to read it.
  2. Configure an encoder to read the file and send it to YouTube. FFmpeg is one possible encoder program, but Google’s documentation mentioning FFmpeg describes its own Live Stream API architecture, not a universal YouTube command recipe. The official pages reviewed do not establish one command, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, keyframe interval, or cloud-server size that is suitable for every file and account. Use the settings presented for your YouTube event and encoder, and verify the result in Live Control Room rather than relying on a profile that may not fit your source.
  3. Use a secure connection where configured for RTMPS. RTMPS is RTMP carried through an SSL/TLS connection. For a YouTube RTMPS endpoint, check that the URL uses the rtmps protocol, that the endpoint and application path are correct, and that the connection uses port 443. The TLS connection also needs the server hostname for SNI-based authentication.
  4. Start the encoder at the planned time. Confirm that it is reading the intended file and sending to the event’s URL and key. Then check Live Control Room for the incoming preview or live status.
  5. End the event deliberately. Stop the encoder’s feed and use the event’s end controls in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not treat that threshold as a guarantee about longer streams.

Understand broadcasts, streams, and automation

In YouTube’s Live Streaming API model, a broadcast is the distinct event or video, while a stream is the feed and settings sent by the encoder. A stream resource can be reused for broadcasts at different times. Separate stream resources may be useful for potentially simultaneous events or events with different settings. This distinction matters when building automation: creating or scheduling the event does not, by itself, make the server send the media.

Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a separate pipeline for RTMP or SRT input and HLS or DASH output. It is not a prerequisite for sending a file from an encoder to YouTube Live.

Fix common connection problems

Symptom What to check
Live Control Room shows no incoming preview Confirm the encoder is running, can read the file, and is using the server URL and stream key for the intended event. Check for accidental whitespace or a key from a different broadcast.
RTMPS connection times out Check whether the encoder is attempting cleartext RTMP against an endpoint expecting RTMPS. Verify the protocol, endpoint, application path, and port 443.
SSL certificate or TLS error Check that the RTMPS endpoint and port are correct, that the encoder supports TLS, and that the connection supplies the endpoint hostname through SNI.
The encoder starts but cannot open the video Check the file path and permissions for the account running the encoder, and verify the media file is present and readable on the server.
The scheduled event is not live at the expected time Check whether the encoder has started and whether the event requires you to wait for a preview and select “Go live” in Live Control Room. Scheduled time alone does not prove that media is being sent.
The stream stops unexpectedly Check the encoder process, server availability, and outgoing connection. In a DIY arrangement you must supervise the process and provide any reconnect behavior yourself.

Choose between DIY and managed cloud streaming

A DIY cloud encoder gives you direct control over the server and automation, but you also own its maintenance and recovery. A managed service can reduce server administration and may offer scheduling, but verify its current file, playlist, duration, account, monitoring, reconnect, and pricing limits with the provider. The official information reviewed does not establish comparable current prices or service limits, so a numerical cost comparison would be misleading.

YouTube lists managed cloud services for scheduled or 24/7 pre-recorded streams. For a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it runs uploaded video from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free. It is a YouTube-only service, not a camera livestreaming tool. See StreamNeo for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I schedule the video in YouTube without running an encoder?

No. The broadcast event and the incoming encoder feed are separate; the server encoder must send the media for viewers to receive it.

Does Google Cloud Live Stream API have to be part of this setup?

No. It is a distinct RTMP/SRT-to-HLS/DASH pipeline, not a required step for sending an encoder’s file feed to YouTube.

Can I use the same YouTube stream for later broadcasts?

In the Live Streaming API model, a stream resource can be reused for broadcasts at different times; separate resources can suit simultaneous events or different settings.
