To repeat a fireplace clip that already includes sound, put -stream_loop -1 before its input’s -i, then use output-side -t if you want a finished file of a specific length. If the video and audio are separate files, loop each input and map the intended streams explicitly.
Loop a fireplace video that already has audio
For a one-hour MP4, use this as a starting point:
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i fireplace.mp4 -t 01:00:00 -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 23 -c:a aac -b:a 192k fireplace-loop.mp4Replace fireplace.mp4 with your input filename and change 01:00:00 to the desired duration. The command repeats the input indefinitely while writing, but the output-side -t stops the export after one hour.
-stream_loop -1is an input option: it tells FFmpeg to loop the next input indefinitely, so it must appear before that input’s-i. FFmpeg documents0as no looping and-1as infinite looping: FFmpeg advanced options.-t 01:00:00limits the output duration. Put it after the input and before the output filename: FFmpeg main options.-c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 23and-c:a aac -b:a 192kare example re-encoding settings, not a promise of a particular quality or file size. Encoder availability depends on your FFmpeg build, and playback compatibility depends on the target device or service.
Loop separate video and audio files
When the fireplace picture and crackling sound are in different files, loop both inputs and select the streams you want:
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i fireplace-video.mp4
-stream_loop -1 -i crackling-fire.wav
-map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 -t 01:00:00
-c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 23 -c:a aac -b:a 192k
fireplace-loop.mp4Each -stream_loop -1 applies to the input that follows it. The first -map selects the first video stream from input 0; the second selects the first audio stream from input 1. Explicit mapping is especially helpful when a file has several audio or video streams or when FFmpeg’s automatic selection would choose the wrong one. See FFmpeg stream selection.

The files may have different durations and formats. Both are repeated, and -t sets the resulting file’s end time. Repeating inputs does not automatically smooth their joins: listen to the audio and inspect the picture at the seam. A click, silence, or visible jump usually means the source itself needs editing or a better loop point; FFmpeg’s input-loop option does not crossfade the seam for you.
Choose between a fixed-length export and continuous output
Make a file that ends at a chosen time
Keep -t DURATION in the command to produce a finite export. Use a duration appropriate to your project, such as -t 02:30:00 for two and a half hours. Because the inputs are looped indefinitely, a finite duration must be specified if you want the file to finish. -shortest is not a substitute here: it ends output when the shortest output stream ends, which is not a useful stopping condition when all relevant inputs loop indefinitely. FFmpeg’s duration and termination options are described in its main options.

Keep a local output running until you stop it
For an output that should continue until manually stopped, omit -t and direct FFmpeg to the output target you have configured. The loop command alone does not supply a platform’s ingest address, credentials, protocol, or current streaming settings. Obtain those details from the service you are sending to rather than guessing or reusing an ingest URL.

FFmpeg documents the video loop filter separately from input-level looping; the filter’s loop=-1 setting repeats frames indefinitely. For an ordinary file with picture and sound, input-level looping is the simpler starting point: FFmpeg loop filter.

When to re-encode, copy streams, or join segments
Re-encoding
The example commands re-encode video and audio into H.264 and AAC. This is a practical compatibility-oriented starting point, but it takes processing time and the stated settings may not suit every source, destination, or installed build. If FFmpeg reports that an encoder is unavailable, check the encoders included in your installed build and choose one it supports.
Stream copy
-c copy passes streams through without re-encoding, which can avoid an encode step. It is not guaranteed to work for every combination: success depends on the source codecs, output container, and operation. Consult FFmpeg’s stream-copy documentation and test the result in the intended player.

Join several different clips
If you have multiple sequential segments to join rather than one clip to repeat, use a concat approach. FFmpeg’s FAQ describes the concat filter when re-encoding is needed and the concat demuxer as an option when avoiding re-encoding. Joining segments is a different task from looping one reusable input, and the methods are not interchangeable: FFmpeg concat FAQ.

- The clip plays once and stops: Check that
-stream_loop -1is before the correct-i. With separate video and audio, add the loop option before each input you want repeated. - The output does not end: Add output-side
-t DURATIONafter the inputs and before the output filename. Without a duration limit, an indefinitely looped input will keep producing output until stopped. - The wrong sound or picture appears: Add or correct the
-mapselections. For separate files, map the video from the video input and audio from the audio input. - FFmpeg reports an encoder or codec error: The example’s encode settings may not be supported by your binary. Check your installed FFmpeg build and its available encoders, or select a supported encoding method.
- The loop has a click, gap, or jump: Review the source at its start and end. Choose a cleaner loop point or edit/crossfade the material before using it as a repeating input.
FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly for the newest revision; its documentation advises consulting locally installed documentation when using an older version. The exact command may need adjustment for your operating system, FFmpeg build, source files, and output target: FFmpeg documentation.
