For a prerecorded podcast episode, use OBS Studio on your Mac mini: create a YouTube encoder stream, add the episode as an OBS Media Source, pair audio-only episodes with a title card or still image, then send the stream using YouTube’s server URL and stream key. For a live podcast conversation, use OBS microphone inputs instead of a finished-episode source. In either case, verify that YouTube Live is enabled for your channel before the day of the broadcast.
Choose the right setup: prerecorded episode or live conversation
These are different workflows. A finished episode plays from a media file; a live conversation needs the host’s microphone and, if applicable, a camera or guest layout.

| Decision | Prerecorded episode | Live podcast conversation |
|---|---|---|
| Main OBS source | Media Source with a local audio or video file | Microphone or interface audio input, plus camera or graphics sources as needed |
| Visual | Still image, title card, or video episode | Camera, guest layout, graphics, or a simple static scene |
| Audio routing | Playback from the OBS media source | Selected microphone inputs; check the Audio Mixer meters |
| Optional equipment | Usually none beyond the Mac mini and its existing setup | A microphone; headphones for monitoring; interface or mixer for more complex inputs |
| Key rehearsal check | File playback, visual, audio levels, and whether looping is intended | Correct input, echo, levels, camera, and guest mix |

Confirm OBS can run on your Mac
OBS lists an Intel or Apple Silicon processor and macOS 11 Big Sur or later as its macOS baseline. Meeting that minimum does not guarantee the Mac can handle every combination of resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity. Check the OBS system requirements and use a rehearsal to validate your actual workload.
Use the Mac mini’s connections appropriately
Apple’s 2024 Mac mini specifications list front USB-C ports and a 3.5 mm headphone jack, as well as rear Ethernet, HDMI, and Thunderbolt ports; the available ports vary by configuration. Ethernet is a sensible option for a stable studio connection when available, and the headphone jack can be used for listening. The Mac alone does not create the broadcast scene or route the encoder; OBS and your selected sources do that. See Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications.

Set up YouTube Live and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select the stream, choose the encoder workflow, and set the event’s title, visibility, and schedule as appropriate. Follow YouTube’s encoder-stream setup instructions for the current interface.
- Copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and connect or enter the server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. Treat the key as a credential: YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not share it publicly.
- Choose video and audio settings in OBS. Start with YouTube’s recommendations in the next section, then use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard and a test transmission to find settings your Mac and upload connection can sustain.
- Start sending from OBS and check YouTube’s preview. Do not assume that pressing Start Streaming means the public event is ready. Confirm the incoming preview and audio in Live Control Room before starting or announcing the event.
Build the OBS scene for the episode
For a prerecorded audio episode
- In the OBS Sources panel, add an Image source for a title card, cover art, or other visual. Set its size and position in the preview.
- Add a Media Source and select the local audio file. OBS documents support for common formats including MP3, AAC, WAV, MP4, MOV, and MKV. Actual playback can depend on the file’s encoding and container, so test the exact file before the broadcast.
- If the episode should repeat, configure the Media Source to loop. If it should play once, leave looping off and decide what the audience should see or hear after it ends.
- Play the source and check that the image remains visible, audio is present, and levels are not clipping. Do not add a microphone unless someone will speak live.
For a prerecorded video episode
Add the video as a Media Source, position it in the scene, and check that both picture and embedded audio play correctly. Decide whether the source should loop; looping an episode is a programming choice, not a requirement for going live.

For a live host or co-host
- Add or select the microphone under OBS Sources using an audio input capture source, then speak and check the Audio Mixer meters.
- If you use a camera, add it as a video source and confirm framing and lighting in the preview.
- Wear headphones while monitoring if practical, particularly when audio is also playing through speakers.
- Avoid capturing the same microphone both as a global device and again as a scene source; OBS warns that duplicating a device this way can cause echo.
A USB podcast microphone can be useful if you will speak live, and headphones help with monitoring. A mixer or audio interface may be useful for multiple microphones or a more involved setup. None is required just to play a prerecorded episode. OBS documents macOS audio input and output capture sources in its audio sources guide.

If the sound comes from another Mac app
OBS Studio 30 and later documents a built-in macOS Audio Capture Source for macOS 13 Ventura and later. It can capture desktop audio or a single application. Older OBS or macOS configurations may require audio-routing software and manual setup. For a locally stored episode, adding the file directly as an OBS Media Source is the more direct documented route. See OBS’s macOS desktop audio capture guide.
Set stream quality and protect against connection problems
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, its listed recommendation is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. These are platform settings recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Mac mini or network can sustain a chosen video quality. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings.

- A POWERFUL PLATFORM FOR AI — Apple silicon is designed to run demanding AI workflows like using huge LLMs, directly on device.
- Protocol: Prefer RTMPS where supported by the OBS YouTube service or the server URL provided by YouTube.
- Rate control: Set video encoding to CBR, as recommended by YouTube.
- Keyframes: Set the interval to two seconds and do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: Use AAC or MP3. YouTube lists 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz for stereo.
- Resolution and frame rate: Choose settings the Mac can encode reliably and your upload can sustain. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, then confirm in a rehearsal rather than assuming the Mac’s minimum system eligibility equals adequate performance.
YouTube advises keeping upload capacity 20% above the total outgoing bitrate and checking outbound bandwidth, not just download speed. For example, if the configured stream sends at a total of 5 Mbps, the recommendation implies at least 6 Mbps of available upload capacity. That is a calculation applying YouTube’s headroom guidance, not a measured test result. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Rehearse, go live, and preserve the recording
- Test the complete scene. OBS recommends a short test stream or recording before the first real event. Confirm the episode or microphone, visual, scene transitions, and audio levels.
- Prepare early. YouTube recommends having the encoder ready at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand.
- Check Live Control Room. Verify that the preview appears, audio is audible, and the correct event page and visibility are selected before you begin.
- Monitor during transmission. Watch for encoder or connection warnings and listen for dropouts, silence, echo, or unexpected loop behavior.
- End deliberately. Stop the event in YouTube and stop sending from OBS as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but verify the archive is available before relying on it as your only copy.
For current event and preview guidance, see YouTube’s live-streaming tips and OBS’s Quick Start Guide. Archive behavior may depend on current YouTube behavior and account settings.

Troubleshoot common failures
- You cannot create or start a live stream: Check channel verification and whether live streaming is enabled. If you have just activated it, YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- OBS connects but YouTube shows no preview: Confirm the selected event, server URL, and stream key match, then check that OBS is actually sending. Re-copy the key from Live Control Room if needed; do not share it.
- The episode has sound but no picture: An audio-only file needs a visible scene element, such as an image source. Check that the image source is enabled and visible in the OBS scene.
- The file will not play or behaves unexpectedly: Test the exact file in OBS before the event. Although OBS documents common formats, not every encoding/container combination is guaranteed to behave identically. Try a known-good export if playback fails.
- There is silence, echo, or doubled audio: Check the OBS mixer meters and confirm the intended microphone or Media Source is active. Remove duplicate capture of the same input, and monitor with headphones rather than speakers where possible.
- The stream drops frames or disconnects: Check outbound bandwidth and keep the 20% upload headroom YouTube recommends. Reduce encoder load or stream settings if the Mac struggles, and prefer Ethernet when available.
- The stream ends when the episode ends: Check whether the Media Source is configured to loop. If the broadcast should continue, set the intended loop behavior and rehearse it; if it should end, plan the end of the event rather than leaving it unattended.
- The archive is missing: Check YouTube Studio after the broadcast and do not rely on an archive until it is visible; YouTube’s stated automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours.
Keep a YouTube episode running without leaving the Mac mini on
OBS is the do-it-yourself route when you want to run the encoder from your Mac. If your aim is to keep uploaded podcast episodes looping as an always-on YouTube stream without leaving a computer and home connection running, StreamNeo runs the playback in the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
- Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start the free StreamNeo day.
Keep the episode rights and YouTube rules in view
Before broadcasting a finished episode, confirm you have the rights to the audio, music, clips, artwork, and any other material in the file. A stream key only authorizes sending to your channel; it does not grant permission to use copyrighted material. YouTube’s live-streaming rules and copyright enforcement apply to prerecorded episodes just as they do to other broadcasts. Consider whether the stream offers meaningful original programming rather than simply repeating material, particularly if you plan to monetize it. Review YouTube’s live-streaming policies and eligibility guidance and its channel monetization policies.
