How to Stream Online Auctions with Amazon IVS

Amazon IVS can deliver auction video, while your application handles bidders, lots, and bids. Learn which IVS mode to choose and how to configure and test it.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Amazon Interactive Video Service (IVS) can carry live auction video, but it does not run the auction for you. Choose an IVS real-time stage when hosts and viewers need to interact with very low delay, or a low-latency channel for an encoder-led broadcast to a larger audience. Your application must still handle bidder identity, lot state, bid validation, bid ordering, deadlines, and auction rules.

Choose the right Amazon IVS mode for an auction

Decision Real-time stage Low-latency channel
Documented latency target Under 300 milliseconds, according to AWS; actual latency varies with geography, network, and the media chain. AWS Real-Time Streaming overview Under five seconds, according to AWS; actual playback delay varies. AWS Low-Latency Streaming overview
Best fit Hosts and participants need to publish or subscribe to media through an interactive application. A host sends an encoder feed to an IVS channel and viewers watch the channel stream.
Viewer path Interactive stage media; a stage can also be broadcast to a channel for low-latency audience playback. Use the IVS Player when aiming for the lowest possible channel playback latency. AWS says third-party HLS players are not supported for the lowest possible latency. AWS Low-Latency Streaming overview
Implementation emphasis Integrate stage participation into your application. Configure an encoder, channel ingest, and viewer playback.

AWS identifies live video auctions as a real-time streaming use case. Its overview describes audiences beyond 25,000 viewers and up to 12 hosts, subject to service quotas. These are service capability statements, not a guarantee for a particular auction deployment. AWS Real-Time Streaming overview

Design bidding around video delay

Video latency is only one part of the time between a host showing an item and a bidder’s offer being accepted. Different viewers can see different points in the stream because geography, network type and speed, and components in the streaming chain affect observed latency. Do not assume every bidder sees the same frame at the same moment.

  • Make the auction backend authoritative: it should validate bids and determine their order and acceptance, rather than treating what a viewer sees as the source of truth.
  • Define how the application handles a bid near a closing deadline, including which server-side timestamp or auction rule determines whether it arrived in time.
  • Show clear countdowns and explicit bid acknowledgments so a bidder can distinguish a submitted bid from an accepted one.
  • Measure end-to-end behavior with the actual host, ingest, playback path, networks, and viewer locations you expect to serve. AWS latency targets are not per-viewer guarantees.

These are application-design implications of variable stream latency; IVS documentation does not prescribe auction rules or provide an auction engine.

Build an interactive auction with a real-time stage

Choose this path when hosts and viewers need to participate in the same application rather than relying only on a one-way encoder broadcast. AWS provides IVS broadcast SDKs; the web SDK supports joining a stage, publishing and subscribing to media, and monitoring media and WebRTC statistics. A host using an SDK needs camera and microphone access. AWS describes real-time latency as under 300 milliseconds, but actual results depend on the deployment and network conditions. AWS Real-Time Streaming overview · IVS Broadcast SDK: Web Guide

  1. Create the auction application. Implement bidder identity, lot state, bid validation and ordering, auction timing, and accepted-bid communication in your own application. IVS supplies video capabilities, not these auction-specific functions.
  2. Set up an IVS stage and integrate the broadcast SDK. Have the host join and publish stage media; add participant publishing or subscription as your interaction design requires. Consult the SDK guide for the platform and current integration steps.
  3. Choose the audience distribution path. If you need channel playback for viewers beyond the interactive stage participants, AWS documents broadcasting a stage to a channel. Use the IVS Player when low-latency channel playback is the goal. AWS Real-Time Streaming overview
  4. Test the complete bid flow. Check host capture, viewer playback, bid submission, server acceptance, acknowledgment, and deadline behavior together from representative locations and networks. Tune the auction interface to observed end-to-end behavior rather than assuming the documented latency target is universal.

Send a single-host auction broadcast to a low-latency channel

For a simpler production in which a host sends video from an encoder, AWS documents RTMPS, RTMP, and SRT ingest. RTMPS encrypts the ingest connection. AWS’s getting-started walkthrough demonstrates OBS and recommends its native SDKs for production scenarios. AWS: Set Up Streaming Software

  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
  1. Create and configure an IVS channel. Follow the current AWS channel setup and obtain the channel’s ingest details and stream key. Treat the key as a secret: do not publish it in client-side code, logs, or auction pages, and rotate it if it is exposed.
  2. Connect OBS or another supported encoder. In the encoder’s streaming settings, choose the ingest protocol and enter the channel ingest server and stream key provided by IVS. Prefer RTMPS where available to encrypt the connection. Follow AWS’s current OBS walkthrough for the exact setup flow. AWS: Set Up Streaming Software
  3. Set the video format within channel limits. Configure resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to fit the IVS channel’s supported configuration. AWS’s configuration documentation covers these limits; do not assume a setting suitable for one channel or network will suit every production. Amazon IVS Streaming Configuration
  4. Set the keyframe interval deliberately. AWS’s OBS setup guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval. Its configuration guidance discusses one-second keyframes as an option to reduce startup latency, with possible adaptive-bitrate trade-offs such as resolution switching or buffering. Start with the documented OBS recommendation, then test a different interval only if your measured use case warrants it. AWS: Set Up Streaming Software · Amazon IVS Streaming Configuration
  5. Start the encoder and verify playback. Confirm the channel is receiving video, audio is clear, and the intended viewer player can play the stream. Test the auction’s bid submission and confirmation flow alongside playback before opening a live sale.

Plan recording separately

Real-time stages support individual participant recording and composite recording to Amazon S3. Individual files are useful when you need separate participant tracks, such as for moderation or later handling of a publisher’s media; a composite recording combines stage media. Choose based on the downstream review or editing workflow, not just the live broadcast setup. IVS Recording: Real-Time Streaming

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The stage, storage configuration, and S3 bucket must be in the same AWS Region for real-time recording to S3.
  • Recording costs include S3 storage and requests; composite recording also incurs video encoding charges. Check current AWS pricing for your region and usage before estimating total cost.
  • AWS warns that network problems can cause recording data loss and recommends local recording as redundancy.

Recording may be relevant for review or operational needs, but whether a recording satisfies auction evidence or retention requirements depends on the applicable business rules and jurisdiction. IVS documentation does not determine that legal question.

Prepare the host setup and protect the stream

  • For an SDK-based host, ensure the device and browser or app can access a camera and microphone. A USB webcam or separate microphone is an optional equipment choice, not an IVS requirement; AWS does not endorse a particular model or establish that specific gear improves IVS latency.
  • For an encoder workflow, check stable network connectivity, the correct channel ingest details, the active stream key, and encoder settings before the auction begins.
  • Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to the channel until it is replaced or access is otherwise controlled.
  • Review rights for every video, image, music track, and other material used in the broadcast. A streaming service does not grant rights to third-party content.
  • Separately determine any jurisdiction-specific requirements for auction operation, payments, bidder verification, and record retention. AWS IVS documentation does not resolve those obligations.

Troubleshoot common auction-stream issues

Symptom Likely checks and response
No video reaches the channel Confirm the encoder is using the channel’s current ingest server and stream key, the selected protocol is supported, and the channel is configured and active. Re-enter the key securely if it may be wrong or exposed.
Video starts slowly or buffers Check viewer network conditions and the complete media chain. Review keyframe interval and encoder settings against the IVS configuration guidance; AWS notes that one-second keyframes can have adaptive-bitrate trade-offs. Test from the actual viewer locations rather than treating a latency target as a guarantee.
Viewers see the lot or countdown at different times Expect variation by viewer geography, network, and stream chain. Make bid acceptance server-authoritative and communicate whether the auction uses a defined deadline rule; do not use the visible video frame as the bid timestamp.
A participant’s recording is missing or incomplete Verify stage and S3 region alignment and inspect network conditions. AWS warns network problems can cause recording data loss; maintain local recording as a redundant copy when recording matters.
The host cannot publish from the app Check that the app has camera and microphone permissions and that the device exposes working media devices. Consult the relevant IVS broadcast SDK guide and monitor its media and WebRTC statistics.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a separate YouTube-only service for looping uploaded videos; it is not an Amazon IVS integration and does not broadcast a live camera. For a prerecorded YouTube auction stream, upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo keeps the loop running in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
