No. Nintendo says the Switch’s YouTube app does not capture gameplay, and the console cannot send a live gameplay stream straight to YouTube. The standard setup is a docked Switch, a capture card and a computer running OBS, which sends the video and audio to YouTube Live. Nintendo confirms the direct-streaming limitation.
What you need to stream Switch gameplay
- A Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED, its dock and AC adapter. The standard capture workflow requires HDMI output from the dock.
- A game capture device with an HDMI input and a connection your computer supports. If you want to play on a TV while streaming, choose a device with HDMI passthrough; not every capture device has it.
- A computer capable of running OBS and handling your chosen resolution, frame rate and encoder settings.
- HDMI cable(s) for the connection shown in your capture device’s port diagram. Nintendo requires an HDMI cable for TV mode; whether you need an additional cable depends on your capture device and display setup.
- OBS Studio and a YouTube channel eligible to go live. YouTube says live streamers must be at least 16 years old.
The Switch Lite cannot use this docked capture workflow: it does not support TV mode and cannot be docked. A generic USB adapter does not change that limitation. See Nintendo’s play-mode guide and OBS’s console-capture FAQ.

Connect the Switch, capture card and computer
- Place the Switch in its dock and connect the dock’s AC adapter.
- Connect the dock’s HDMI output to the capture device’s HDMI input.
- Connect the capture device to the computer using its supported USB connection (or internal connection, if applicable).
- If your device has HDMI passthrough and you want to play on a separate TV, connect its HDMI output to the TV. Otherwise, you can use OBS’s preview, but the preview may introduce delay. Do not assume passthrough is included; check the device’s ports and manufacturer instructions.
Nintendo’s TV-mode instructions show the dock-to-display HDMI connection. The capture device sits between the dock and the computer in the streaming setup.
Set up video and audio in OBS
- Install and open OBS. Run Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard if available in your version; it helps choose initial settings based on your computer and network. OBS cautions that performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a Video Capture Device. Choose your capture device, then confirm that Switch gameplay appears in the preview. The precise device name and available settings vary by manufacturer and model. See OBS’s guide to video capture sources.
- Check the Audio Mixer while the game is making sound. If the meters do not move for game audio, open the capture source’s properties and select the appropriate audio device, or add the capture card’s audio input as a separate source.
- Confirm that the game image is framed correctly and that audio is audible without clipping. Add a microphone or other sources only if you need them.
As one model-specific example, AVerMedia’s GC553 OBS guide configures video and HDMI audio separately and lists Nintendo Switch at 60 fps as a reference source. Those steps and that reference are for the GC553 guide, not a universal setting for every capture card.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room. Prepare a stream and choose the encoder workflow. YouTube describes encoder streaming as suitable for gameplay with overlays, microphones or cameras.
- Connect OBS using YouTube’s supported service/account or stream-key workflow. Follow the current YouTube Studio labels; the interface can change.
- If you use a stream key, keep it private. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Before going public, check the stream title, visibility and audience settings in YouTube Studio. Start streaming from OBS when the event is ready, then confirm the incoming picture and sound in the Live Control Room.
YouTube’s current live-streaming getting-started guidance covers encoder setup and eligibility. Its stated minimum age for live streaming is 16.
Choose settings your connection and computer can sustain
Start with OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard rather than assuming that a computer or capture card can stream at its maximum advertised resolution and frame rate. Capacity varies with the encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity, and a capture card’s input capability does not guarantee that the whole setup can encode and upload reliably.

- 【1080P 60FPS Video Capture Card】 This HDMI game capture card is based on USB3.0 high speed transmission port, input resolution up to 4K@30HZ, output resolution up to 2K@30Hz or 1920×1080@60Hz. Type c and USB interface can meet most of the devices in daily life. Easily meet the online capture, real-time recording, online meetings, live gaming and other functions, so you have a better visual enjoyment. Note: For capture use only; requires capture software to function and is not intended for direct screen casting to a monitor or TV
- 【Ultra Low Latency Screen Sharing】 HDMI capture card is made of good quality aluminum alloy with strong heat dissipation, allowing you to enjoy ultra low latency while live gaming or video recording or live streaming, avoiding blue screens and lag. This HDMI to USBC capture card supports easy recording of good quality audio or HD video and transferring it to your computer or streaming platform, allowing you to record 60 fps HD video directly on your hard drive and real-time preview
- 【Plug and Play, Easy to Carry】 This HDMI 1080P video capture card does not require any additional drivers or external power supply, just plug and play for fast capture. The capture card is small and lightweight, so you can put it in your bag for emergencies, making it very portable for outdoor live streaming. It's also a great way to share content in game recording, video conference, video recorder and online teaching
- 【Wide Compatibility USB Capture Card】 Easily streams to Facebook, Youtube or Twitch. With the connection, this HDMI to USB C/3.0 video capture devices can be working on several Operating Systems and various software: Windows 7/ 8/ 10, Mac OS or above, Linux, Android, Laptop, Xbox One, PS3/PS4/PS5, Camera, DVDs, Set Top Box, Webcame, DSLR, Switch/Switch 2, TV BOX, HDTV, Potplayer/VLC, ZOOM, OBS Studio etc.
- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Resolution and frame rate: Set a target that the capture device, computer and upload connection can all handle. The Switch source and the selected capture setup determine what is available; higher capture-card specifications do not automatically improve the stream.
- Bitrate: YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance lists H.264 at 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. This is YouTube’s recommendation for that codec and output combination, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain it. Choose settings suited to a stable upload connection and run a speed test.
- Keyframes and other encoder options: Use the values recommended in YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance for the chosen codec and output. Confirm the settings in OBS against that guidance rather than relying on an old tutorial.
- Test content: Test with representative gameplay movement and game audio, not a static menu. If suitable for your channel, use a private or unlisted test and monitor YouTube’s stream health before a public session.
See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates and the OBS quick-start guide. Neither a nominally compatible computer nor a capture card guarantees stable results at every setting.

- It accepts the Switch dock’s HDMI output and supports the operating system on your computer.
- It works with OBS, and the manufacturer documents how to expose its video and audio inputs.
- Its supported capture resolution and frame rate match your intended stream.
- It has HDMI passthrough if you want a separate TV display while playing.
- You understand how game audio reaches OBS and what cables the device requires.
AVerMedia Live Gamer ULTRA GC553 is one documented example: its manufacturer provides an OBS setup guide showing separate video and HDMI audio configuration and a Switch 60 fps reference. That documentation is not a comparative test or endorsement. Check current manufacturer specifications and availability before purchase.
Copyright and YouTube channel rules
- Meet YouTube’s live-streaming requirements. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16 years old. Check the current eligibility and account requirements in its live-streaming guidance.
- Consider rights in the game and audio. A capture setup does not grant permission to broadcast copyrighted game footage, music or other material. Review the rights and publisher policies relevant to the game, and avoid adding music or other content unless you have permission or a valid license. YouTube may apply its copyright policies to live content.
- Make the stream your own. A gameplay stream should comply with YouTube’s channel monetization and reused-content policies if you seek monetization. Eligibility is not guaranteed simply because footage is captured from a console; consult YouTube’s current policies and provide original commentary or other meaningful contribution where appropriate.
Troubleshoot common Switch streaming problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No Switch picture in OBS | The console is not outputting through the dock, or the capture device/source is misconfigured. | Confirm the Switch is docked, the dock is powered, HDMI runs from dock output to capture input, the capture device is connected, and OBS’s Video Capture Device source selects the correct device. |
| Picture appears, but game audio is missing | The capture device’s audio is not selected or exposed as an OBS source. | Watch the Audio Mixer meters while gameplay audio plays. Check the capture source’s audio properties or add the capture card’s audio input separately, following its manufacturer guide. |
| Gameplay is delayed on the TV or preview | You may be playing from OBS’s preview, which can introduce delay. | Use a capture device with HDMI passthrough and route its output to the TV, if you want a separate display. Verify passthrough on the particular model. |
| Stream drops frames or YouTube reports poor health | The computer or upload connection may not sustain the chosen output settings. | Run a speed test, revisit OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate as appropriate, and test again with representative gameplay. |
| Switch Lite does not appear as a capture source | Switch Lite cannot be docked and does not support TV mode. | The standard dock-to-HDMI capture-card workflow requires a TV-mode-capable Switch or Switch OLED; a generic USB adapter does not make the Lite compatible with this workflow. |

It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
