How to Stream Multiple Recorded Sermons in a Loop on YouTube Without Gaps

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source to play several local sermon recordings in order, with Loop Playlist enabled. That keeps the YouTube Live broadcast running as the playlist repeats, but OBS does not promise frame- or audio-gapless transitions. Test every boundary—including the final sermon back to the first—before relying on it for a service.

Before you start

  • Enable YouTube live streaming in advance. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not wait until broadcast time. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
  • Have the recordings available locally. The computer running OBS needs access to the sermon files throughout playback.
  • Check permissions. Confirm that your church has permission to rebroadcast each recording and all embedded music, video, artwork, or other material. The setup documentation does not establish whether you have those rights.
  • Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. The OBS documentation is dated January 11, 2022; labels or layout may differ in a later OBS version. See OBS Media Sources.

Set up a sermon playlist in OBS

  1. Open OBS and add a VLC Video source to the scene you intend to broadcast. If VLC is not installed, install it before configuring the source.
  2. Open the source’s properties and add the sermon video files to its playlist in the order you want them played.
  3. Leave shuffle off if the sermons need to follow a fixed sequence.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist so the source restarts after the final file. OBS documents this as restarting when the source has run out of media files; it does not describe the setting as a guarantee of seamless transitions.
  5. Check that the source is visible and audible in the OBS preview. Confirm the scene and audio mix you plan to send to YouTube.

For a single recording rather than a playlist, OBS’s ordinary Media Source has its own Loop property. For multiple recordings, VLC Video is the documented playlist option.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you plan to use. Follow YouTube’s channel setup guidance if live streaming is not enabled.
  2. Open YouTube’s encoder setup and copy the stream URL and stream key for the selected stream. In OBS, open Settings → Stream and enter the server URL and key. The exact interface can vary with OBS versions; consult YouTube’s encoder workflow.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. YouTube explains that it tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Do not share or publish it. You can review YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
  4. Start streaming from OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. When the picture and sound are correct, use YouTube’s controls to start the live broadcast.

Choose ingest settings and verify stream health

YouTube’s current general encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 in its stated RTMP(S) guidance. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrates depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec, so use YouTube’s current table rather than applying a number from a different stream setup: encoder setup and live-streaming tips.

YouTube also supports HLS ingest, but it sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP feed and has higher latency. It has its own segment and rolling-playlist requirements. HLS is an encoder and stream-design choice, not a documented fix for pauses between sermon files. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Test for pauses before the service

A looping playlist and a gapless playlist are not the same thing. OBS documents repeating the list; it does not document a frame- or audio-gapless transition guarantee. File endings and beginnings, decoding, audio-track layout, storage performance, and computer load are practical factors to check, not documented guarantees.

  1. Run a test stream using the exact sermon files, OBS scene, and settings planned for the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring audio and video while streaming: live-streaming tips.
  2. Listen and watch across every sermon-to-sermon transition, not just the first one.
  3. Let the entire playlist reach its end and check the final-to-first transition as well.
  4. Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream health during the test; also confirm that your internet connection can sustain the encoder’s upload.
  5. If there is a pause, consider editing the recordings into one continuous program or adding a deliberate short holding visual or audio segment. These are production options, not OBS guarantees; test the revised program again.

Plan for long broadcasts

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a single live event will create a permanent archive for a continuous broadcast extending beyond 12 hours. Plan how you will supervise the encoder and detect connection loss or playback stalls. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and live-streaming tips.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a local OBS computer and home internet connection to remain available, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos. Upload your sermon videos, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It can keep the stream running with your computer off, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
