Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To stream several pre-recorded videos in order from a Hetzner server to YouTube Live, run a playlist or playback process on the server, feed its continuous output to an encoder, and send that encoder output to YouTube using the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Use RTMPS, test the transitions and audio, and keep the stream key private. The exact playback and encoding setup depends on your files; there is no universal command that safely fits every media combination.
How the Hetzner-to-YouTube setup works
The server does not send a folder of videos directly to YouTube. A playback process selects and advances through the files, while an encoder turns that playback into one continuous live feed. The encoder then connects outward from Hetzner to YouTube’s ingest service.

- Prepare the playlist: put the videos in the intended order and make sure the server can read them.
- Play the sequence: use a media playback or playlist process that advances from one selected video to the next.
- Encode the output: configure an encoder to produce a continuous audio-and-video stream.
- Send it to YouTube: enter the RTMPS URL and stream key from the Live Control Room in the encoder configuration.
This describes the architecture, not a tested command or a guarantee of seamless transitions. The right implementation depends on the files’ codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio streams, containers, and timestamps, as well as whether transitions must be seamless. Test with representative files before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCreate the YouTube live stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed for that stream. YouTube describes the key as similar to the stream’s password and address; use the values shown in Live Control Room rather than guessing an ingest endpoint. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the setup.
- Use the RTMPS URL in your encoder when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts RTMP transport with TLS. Its RTMPS instructions explain how to reveal and copy the URL.
- Store the key in a protected configuration or secret store. Do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, or log. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
Set encoder output to match the material
YouTube’s current encoder settings recommendations support RTMP/RTMPS ingest and list H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Choose settings based on the source, encoder, and available outbound network capacity, then check YouTube’s stream-health indicators.

Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. As one example, YouTube lists 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee that every server, source, or network path can sustain the output. Match the encoder’s resolution and frame rate to the material where practical, and verify the actual result in the Live Control Room preview.
Build and validate the video sequence
Check files before configuring playback
- Confirm the intended order and that every file is accessible to the server process.
- Check each file’s video and audio codec, dimensions, frame rate, container, and timestamps. Differences can affect whether the playback layer can feed one consistent output without gaps or conversion.
- Decide whether a brief gap or transition between videos is acceptable. A playlist that advances files is not automatically a seamless broadcast.
Test with a representative sequence
Run a short test using files that represent the variation in the full playlist. Watch YouTube’s preview and check picture, audio continuity, and the transition from one file to the next. YouTube recommends reviewing the preview and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality before depending on the broadcast. Confirm that viewers can access the event through its watch page. See YouTube’s live encoder setup guidance.

Configure Hetzner networking and estimate traffic
The encoder initiates an outbound connection to YouTube’s ingest endpoint, so this workflow does not inherently require exposing a public inbound streaming port. Hetzner Cloud Firewalls block inbound traffic when no rules are configured and permit outbound traffic by default. If you add restrictive custom outbound rules, allow the server to reach the selected YouTube ingest endpoint. Hetzner says Cloud Firewalls have no charge. See the Hetzner Cloud Firewalls documentation.
Included traffic depends on the Cloud server product and location. Hetzner’s traffic documentation lists 20 TB monthly for CX, CPX, and CAX Cloud Servers in EU locations; US and Singapore allowances vary by plan and server type. The figures on that documentation page were last changed on 2024-05-21, so check the current pricing view for your chosen server and location before projecting costs. Check Hetzner’s Cloud server traffic details.

Estimate outbound transfer from the encoder’s actual bitrate and expected streaming hours. Do not count YouTube viewers’ playback traffic as though it were being served from the Hetzner machine: the server’s relevant stream traffic is the encoder feed sent to YouTube.
Run, monitor, and end the broadcast
- Keep the playback and encoder processes running for the duration of the event. Plan how you will monitor them and recover them if either process stops; reliability depends on your configuration and operation.
- Watch the Live Control Room for stream health and audio/video quality, especially during the initial test and file transitions.
- YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same archive rule applies to streams lasting longer. YouTube’s encoder setup page describes the under-12-hour rule.
- At the end, stop sending content from the encoder and end the stream in Live Control Room as appropriate for your configuration.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | URL, key, or outbound network access | Copy the current URL and key from the relevant Live Control Room stream. Check for restrictive custom Hetzner outbound firewall rules and permit the ingest connection. |
| The encoder reports an SSL error | Transport URL or port | Confirm the URL uses rtmps, not rtmp. YouTube notes that specifying port 443 can resolve some SSL errors; use the endpoint details shown in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions. |
| Video or audio breaks at a file boundary | Differences in media properties or playlist behavior | Test the affected transition, inspect the files’ codecs, frame rates, audio streams, containers, and timestamps, and adjust the playback or encoding workflow. A playlist process does not guarantee seamless transitions. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health | Output settings or sustainable network capacity | Check the encoder’s bitrate, codec, frame rate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s recommendations and the server’s actual outbound capacity. Review the Live Control Room health indicators. |
| The stream stops when a process exits | Playback or encoder process operation | Check which process stopped and plan monitoring and restart behavior for your server setup. Do not assume the host or encoder will recover automatically. |
