YouTube’s encoder workflow is the documented option for advanced productions using external audio hardware. Configure and balance the inputs before going live, then check the Live Control Room preview and monitor the broadcast.
Decide what needs to be heard
List the audio you want viewers to hear: for example, your microphone, computer or game audio, playback you have permission to use, or a remote guest returned by conferencing software. These may be separate physical devices or audio feeds from software. The controls available to combine them depend on your encoder, operating system, and connected equipment.

YouTube distinguishes mobile, webcam, and encoder streaming. Its encoder guidance covers external audio hardware and advanced productions, making an encoder the practical starting point when you need to combine inputs. A mobile or webcam setup may suit a simpler broadcast, but its ability to route several independent sources depends on the app and device.

Use the encoder for a simple mix
If you need a microphone and computer audio, first check whether your encoder and operating system can capture both. Route or select each source using the controls supported by that software. Do not assume every encoder has a control with the same name, or that every operating system exposes the same audio routing options.

Add a mixer or interface when you need more control
A mixer or audio interface can be useful when you have several microphones or want hands-on control over individual inputs. YouTube lists mixers and multiple microphones as examples for advanced setups; that does not mean every creator needs extra hardware. Check that your sources connect to the device and that its output can be used by your computer and encoder.
Start with equipment you already have. YouTube says creators do not need expensive equipment to begin streaming; add hardware to address a specific input, connection, or live-control need rather than buying it by default.

Connect and balance the sources
- Connect physical sources. Plug microphones and other audio devices into the intended computer, mixer, or interface inputs. For software sources, use the routing options supported by your operating system and encoder.
- Select the intended inputs. In the encoder, choose the devices or routed feeds you want included. Exact menus and controls vary by encoder and operating system, so follow the current documentation for your specific setup.
- Set and check levels. Make speech easy to understand and keep other sources from overpowering it. Listen to a test recording or a private or unlisted preview, if available, and check for missing, muted, or distorted audio. There is no universal gain value for every microphone and room.
- Check the combined mix. Listen to the output viewers will receive, not only to each source in isolation. Confirm that the intended sources are present and that muting or changing a source has the expected effect.
Preview, go live, and monitor
- Open YouTube Live Control Room for the scheduled or newly created stream and connect your encoder using the stream settings provided there.
- Check the preview before starting. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview before you start the public broadcast. Confirm that the picture and every intended audio source are present.
- Start the broadcast and keep monitoring. YouTube recommends continuously monitoring audio and video quality during the stream. If a source disappears or becomes too loud, correct it at the encoder or mixer and verify the resulting mix.
Leave upload capacity beyond the encoder’s total stream bitrate. YouTube Help recommends 20% of headroom: the total bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth, and the extra room is a recommendation, not a guarantee against interruptions. The usable upload capacity can vary, so check the connection under conditions similar to the live broadcast.

Protect the stream key
Your stream key lets the encoder send its feed to YouTube, so treat it as private access information. Do not publish or share it. If it is compromised, a channel owner or manager can reset the key in Live Control Room and then update the encoder with the replacement.

Use HLS audio settings only for an HLS stream
YouTube’s HLS guidance recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround, and lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 as supported audio codecs. These recommendations are specific to HLS ingestion; they are not a reason to change settings on every YouTube stream. Follow the current HLS preset and settings for your encoder. YouTube names OBS among encoders that support HLS output.
YouTube’s 5.1 guidance supports mono, stereo, and 5.1 channel layouts; other configurations may convert unreliably to stereo. This concerns multichannel surround output, which is different from combining several independent microphones or software sources into a stereo mix.

Troubleshoot common audio problems
- A source is missing: Check that it is connected or routed, selected in the encoder, and not muted. Confirm the encoder is receiving the intended device or software feed.
- One source overwhelms the others: Lower that source at the encoder, mixer, or interface, then listen to the combined mix again.
- Audio is distorted: Reduce the affected input level and check the signal at each point in the chain, including the source device and mixer or interface.
- The preview is silent or differs from your local monitoring: Check the encoder’s selected output and inputs, then verify the Live Control Room preview before starting the broadcast.
- The stream drops or struggles: Compare total stream bitrate with available upload bandwidth and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. This recommendation does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
- The encoder can no longer connect: Check that it is using the current stream key. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder.
