You can stream a prerecorded MP4 from a Linux server to YouTube Live by using an encoder to send a live feed to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. First confirm your channel can go live, check the file’s codecs, configure a YouTube-compatible output, and test the feed before the event. The server’s location in India does not require a special YouTube ingest endpoint; verify its actual outbound connectivity and upload capacity instead.
Before you begin: check channel readiness
YouTube’s general live-streaming requirements say the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and meet YouTube’s minimum age requirement of 16. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. These are general YouTube requirements; the available official guidance does not describe a separate India-specific encoder rule. See YouTube’s instructions for getting started with live streaming.
Prepare the MP4 and Linux server
Check what is inside the file
MP4 describes a container, not necessarily compatible video and audio codecs. Inspect the actual video codec, audio codec, frame rate, dimensions, and audio tracks before selecting encoder settings. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio, with frame rates up to 60 fps. If the file does not match the settings you intend to send, configure your encoder to produce a compatible live feed rather than assuming the file extension guarantees compatibility. YouTube’s current recommendations are in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Check upload capacity
The server needs stable outbound bandwidth above the stream’s selected bitrate. Leave headroom for normal network variation; a connection that only just matches the video bitrate can result in an unstable feed. Check connectivity to the endpoint YouTube provides, not just a general speed-test result. Server region, provider routing, and egress charges are provider-specific; the official YouTube guidance does not establish that an Indian server needs a particular route or hosting provider.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, complete the channel’s live-stream setup and allow time for first-time activation if needed.
- Create or schedule the event. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.
- Copy the connection details. In the event’s stream settings, copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown there. Use the exact endpoint for that event; do not guess a universal URL. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s credential. For an API-managed setup, use the ingestion information returned for the LiveStreams resource rather than assuming a fixed endpoint. See YouTube LiveStreams ingestion information.
- Configure the Linux encoder. Set it to read the MP4 and publish a live feed using the supplied RTMPS URL and key. Keep the key out of source control, public logs, shell-history files that others can access, and screenshots.
- Start a test feed. Confirm that Live Control Room receives the signal and displays a preview before starting the public event.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its documented RTMPS service uses TLS and port 443. The endpoint and key shown in Live Control Room are the values to use. Read YouTube’s encoder settings guidance alongside your encoder’s documentation. The official guidance cited here does not validate a particular FFmpeg command or Linux build, so verify that your installed encoder supports the options and output format you configure.
Choose compatible encoder settings
Use YouTube’s current settings guidance as a starting point, then match the output to your file and the server’s stable upload capacity. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and a keyframe interval of two seconds; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its supported guidance covers frame rates up to 60 fps.
| Setting | What to configure | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 | Check the MP4’s actual video codec; use encoder output settings that meet YouTube’s recommendation. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 | Confirm the file has an audio track and that the encoder sends it in a supported format. |
| Bitrate mode | CBR | Choose the bitrate for the intended resolution and frame rate, then confirm the server can sustain more outbound capacity than that bitrate. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; 4 seconds maximum | Set the encoder’s keyframe interval accordingly. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps | Match the intended output to the source where practical; do not select a higher rate without a reason. |
Bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, and the table’s selected parameters. For example, YouTube’s current table lists 10–14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 depending on the applicable row parameters. Check the current table rather than treating that range as universal or as a measured guarantee. The guidance is configuration advice, not a promise that a specific server connection will perform reliably.

Test, start, and monitor the event
- Start the encoder early enough to check that the Live Control Room preview appears and stream health is acceptable.
- Listen for audio and watch representative motion, not just a static opening frame. YouTube recommends tests that exercise representative movement and audio.
- Review stream-health messages during the broadcast and monitor the actual picture and sound.
- If the feed is not healthy, adjust the encoder or investigate the server’s outbound connection before relying on it for the event.
See YouTube’s encoder guidance for stream testing and health recommendations.

Keep the stream key private and recover safely
Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the event. Store it in a restricted configuration or secret-management mechanism rather than committing it to a public repository or printing it in logs. If it is exposed, reset it through Live Control Room and update the server configuration that uses it. YouTube documents the reset process in Reset your stream key.
RTMPS, HLS, or DASH?
RTMPS is the straightforward default for a conventional continuous encoder feed. YouTube also documents HLS and DASH, but they fit more specialized encoder needs and require attention to segment or manifest details. Choose by codec, HDR, encoder support, and latency needs—not simply because the server is in India.

| Protocol | When it may fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | Ordinary continuous encoder output and conventional live use | Uses secure RTMP transport; use the correct event endpoint, TLS, and port 443. |
| HLS | An encoder workflow that needs HLS-specific codec or HDR support | Uses HTTPS segment uploads and segment rules; latency is generally higher. |
| DASH | A specialized encoder that implements YouTube’s DASH requirements | Segment and manifest handling is more involved, with codec, container, and timing constraints. |

The preview appears but stream health is poor
Compare the selected bitrate with the server’s stable upload capacity, verify CBR and the keyframe interval, and check the source codecs and output frame rate. If the connection cannot sustain the selected output, reduce the output demands in line with YouTube’s current resolution and frame-rate table.
The preview has no sound or the picture is wrong
Confirm the intended audio track is enabled and encoded as AAC or MP3, and check the video codec, dimensions, frame rate, and representative playback in the preview. A valid MP4 container alone does not confirm those properties.
The key has been exposed
Reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value in the server’s protected configuration. Do not continue using a potentially compromised key; follow YouTube’s reset instructions.
