How to Configure FFmpeg for 720p YouTube Streaming on a VPS in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a prerecorded video, a practical starting point for 720p30 YouTube streaming is FFmpeg with H.264, a two-second keyframe interval, CBR-style rate control targeting 8 Mbps video, and AAC stereo audio at 128 kbps. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum for 720p30, but lowering the bitrate is a picture-quality compromise—not a guaranteed fix for an underpowered VPS. Whether a low-cost India-region server can encode your particular video in real time must be tested on that instance.

What YouTube expects for a 720p stream

YouTube’s current encoder-settings page recommends H.264 at 8 Mbps for both 720p30 and 720p60, and lists 3 Mbps as the minimum for each. It also recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds between keyframes. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

Setting 720p30 starting point 720p60 starting point
Video codec H.264 H.264
Recommended video bitrate 8 Mbps 8 Mbps
Minimum video bitrate listed by YouTube 3 Mbps 3 Mbps
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds
Audio AAC or MP3; 128 kbps recommended; 44.1 kHz for stereo AAC or MP3; 128 kbps recommended; 44.1 kHz for stereo

The recommended bitrate is a quality target, not proof that your server can encode at that rate. Frame rate, source complexity, decoding and filtering load, CPU allocation, and the network route all matter. At 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP corresponds to two seconds; at 60 fps, use 120 frames for the same interval.

Prepare YouTube and the VPS

Get the private ingest details

In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream. The output URL in the command below combines those values; do not publish the key in a public script, screenshot, repository, or log. If the key is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before using the stream again.

Check FFmpeg support and server constraints

Install an FFmpeg build that includes the libx264 encoder and RTMPS protocol support. The FFmpeg protocol documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection and documents real-time pacing for RTMP output: FFmpeg protocol documentation. Encoder options are build- and encoder-dependent; consult FFmpeg codec documentation for the controls supported by your build.

Before renting a plan, check its full recurring price, India-region availability, CPU allocation and sustained-use policy, RAM, permitted outbound ports, continuous outbound throughput, transfer or fair-use cap, and support terms with the provider. The video target alone is 8 Mbps; allow headroom for audio and operational variation. An advertised port speed or an “unmetered” label does not establish that the server can sustain the stream’s throughput continuously. No named India VPS plan or verified low-cost 720p encoding benchmark is established here, so this is not a provider recommendation.

Run a prerecorded MP4 to YouTube at 720p30

This illustrative command loops a local MP4, scales it to fit inside 1280×720 while preserving its aspect ratio, pads to a 16:9 frame, outputs 30 fps, and encodes H.264 video with stereo AAC audio.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -vf "scale=1280:720:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1280:720:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,fps=30,format=yuv420p"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -profile:v main
  -b:v 8M -minrate 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
  -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'

Replace these values before running it

  • input.mp4: the video file path on the VPS. Ensure the account running FFmpeg can read it.
  • YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL: the ingest address from the YouTube Live Control Room.
  • YOUR_STREAM_KEY: the private key associated with the stream. Keep it out of public files and logs.

The command is an example assembled from published settings; it has not been executed or tested. Its -re input option paces a prerecorded file in real time, while -stream_loop -1 repeats it indefinitely. Remove -stream_loop -1 if the source should play once. If the source is already 1280×720 with the intended aspect ratio, the scale and pad filters may be simplified; retain the frame-rate and pixel-format choices only if they suit the source and destination workflow.

The -b:v, -minrate, and -maxrate options target a steady 8 Mbps video rate, with a 16 Mbps buffer setting. The two-second GOP at 30 fps is set by -g 60; -keyint_min 60 and -sc_threshold 0 discourage shorter scene-cut keyframe intervals. Exact rate-control behavior depends on the FFmpeg build and encoder. The veryfast preset is a sensible first attempt on a CPU-constrained host, not a guarantee of real-time performance or an optimal setting. AWS’s separate IVS instructions show similar FFmpeg syntax, but are not authority for YouTube settings: AWS IVS streaming-software example.

For a 720p60 attempt

YouTube lists the same recommended and minimum H.264 bitrates for 720p60 as for 720p30, but 60 fps requires the VPS to process more frames per second. Change fps=30 to fps=60, and change -g 60 -keyint_min 60 to -g 120 -keyint_min 120 to preserve the two-second keyframe interval. Test the actual source and instance; the shared bitrate recommendation does not mean the CPU workload is the same.

If you need to try a lower bitrate

YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the H.264 minimum for 720p30 and 720p60. You can test a lower target by changing the three 8 Mbps rate values to 3 Mbps and adjusting the buffer as appropriate for the chosen rate. Expect possible loss of detail, especially in motion. Lowering bitrate reduces network use but does not necessarily ease CPU saturation: bitrate and encoding complexity are separate constraints.

Validate the VPS before relying on it

  1. Use representative content. Test the same type of video, motion, resolution, and audio that you plan to stream. A static image or short light-load test cannot establish performance for demanding footage.
  2. Watch FFmpeg’s processing speed. The reported speed should remain at or above real time. If it falls below 1x, the server is not keeping up with the paced source.
  3. Monitor the host. Check CPU and network use during a sustained test, not only at startup. Determine whether the bottleneck is decoding/filtering, encoding, or outbound connectivity.
  4. Check YouTube stream health. Keep the Live Control Room open and respond to its stream-health messages. YouTube recommends representative pre-event testing, monitoring stream health, and reviewing its messages; see YouTube’s encoder settings and testing guidance.
  5. Test the route and policy. Confirm the server can sustain outbound traffic to YouTube on the required port and that transfer or fair-use terms allow the intended continuous use.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to investigate What to try
FFmpeg speed stays below real time CPU capacity, source decoding, filters, frame rate, or encoder preset Check CPU load; test a simpler source or fewer filters; try a faster preset; compare 30 fps with 60 fps only if 30 fps meets the need. Re-test on the actual instance.
YouTube reports an unstable or interrupted stream Outbound route, sustained throughput, bitrate headroom, or provider limits Review YouTube’s health messages and VPS network use; verify port access, sustained throughput, and transfer policy with the provider. A lower bitrate may help network pressure but may reduce image quality.
FFmpeg cannot open the input Incorrect path, permissions, or unsupported media Confirm the file exists at the specified path, the FFmpeg user can read it, and the installed build can decode its formats.
RTMPS connection fails Incorrect ingest URL/key, missing RTMPS support, or blocked outbound port Re-copy the current ingest URL and key from YouTube Studio, verify FFmpeg protocol support, and check the provider’s outbound-port rules.
Picture is stretched, cropped, or has bars Scale and pad behavior versus source aspect ratio Check the source dimensions and aspect ratio. The example preserves the image inside 1280×720 and pads the remaining space; adapt the filter only if you deliberately want a different crop or fit.
Image quality is poor at the lower target Reduced bitrate, especially with motion and fine detail Test the 8 Mbps recommendation if the VPS and route can sustain it, or use a less demanding source. Do not assume a bitrate change can fix an encoding-speed problem.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a prerecorded YouTube channel stream that stays live without a VPS you configure and monitor, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot includes 10 GB storage (pooled across active slots), looping and playlists, and team support. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account; monthly billing is available at $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India, while card checkout is available worldwide. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not send a live camera feed.
