Your streaming subscription may work abroad, but the movie selection can change when you cross a border. Before leaving, check the service’s travel rules for your destination and the exact movie, then download it in the service’s app at home if your plan and device support offline viewing. A download is a useful backup—not a guarantee that every title will play in every country or stay available indefinitely.
Will your streaming subscription work abroad?
Usually, you can still use a streaming service while traveling, but you may see a different catalog from the one at home. Netflix says each country has its own selection of original and licensed titles, Disney+ says availability can vary by location, and Prime Video says members abroad can stream selected titles whose selection may change.

That means a subscription does not guarantee access to the same movie everywhere. Check the service’s official travel guidance and search for the exact title for your destination before you go. Netflix also notes that title selection and download choices—including audio and subtitle options—may differ outside the country where you signed up. - Identify your trip details. Note the streaming service, the account’s home country, your destination, and your travel dates. Rules can depend on both where the account is based and where you are going.
- Check the movie, not just the service. Look up the exact title in the destination catalog or confirm that the app offers a download for your account. A movie appearing at home does not mean it will be offered abroad.
- Check plan and device eligibility. Read the service’s current download rules for your subscription and device. Requirements differ; for example, Disney+ currently limits downloads to qualifying Premium-level plans and supported phones or tablets.
- Download at home and verify it. Use Wi-Fi before departure, then open the app’s Downloads area and confirm the movie is listed. Do this while you can still troubleshoot sign-in, storage, or download problems.
- Check renewal or expiration conditions. Some downloads require periodic internet access to remain active. If the service specifies a reconnection interval, connect the device before that interval passes.
What to know about each service
Netflix
Netflix says each country has its own catalog and that the country associated with an account cannot be changed unless the subscriber moves. Its travel guidance says selection and download options may differ outside the signup country. For second homes or frequent travel, Netflix’s current help guidance also describes connecting monthly from the main viewing location; check the live page for how it applies to your account.

Can you watch a downloaded movie on a plane?
Often, if the service allows the download on your plan and device, the title has finished downloading, and it remains valid. Open the app’s Downloads area before boarding to confirm the movie is there. Do not assume a download will work forever or in every location: services can impose device, plan, expiration, or periodic-internet requirements. For Disney+, the device must reconnect at least once every 30 days.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is a movie missing while you travel?
Streaming rights and available catalogs vary by country, so a title offered at home may not appear in the destination catalog. A title can also be unavailable to download even when it can be streamed, and some audio, subtitle, or download options may change abroad. Search the destination catalog and check the service’s travel guidance; if you need certainty for a flight or other offline period, use a valid app download rather than relying on live streaming.
