You can use VLC to play a continuous kirtan playlist, but VLC’s documented playlist-streaming example does not establish that VLC by itself can send a compatible feed directly to YouTube Live. YouTube requires an encoder configured with the event’s stream URL and key. Build the playlist, connect a compatible encoder, then verify the signal in YouTube Studio before relying on it for a broadcast.
What you need for a continuous kirtan livestream
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream: YouTube says it must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the person livestreaming must be at least 16. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance has the current requirements.
- Kirtan recordings you are authorized to broadcast, arranged as a playlist in VLC.
- A computer and a stable network connection for the entire broadcast if you run the playback and encoder locally.
- An encoder that can send a YouTube-compatible feed using the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Studio. VLC’s documented local-network example is not proof of direct YouTube compatibility.
VLC’s stream-output tools can process media files and stream output; its documented playlist example uses successive inputs and sout-keep to keep output open across track transitions. Prepare and loop the playlist in VLC
- Add only cleared recordings. In VLC, create a playlist containing the kirtan tracks you intend to broadcast. Confirm permission for each specific recording and its underlying composition for YouTube livestreaming and the relevant territory. Religious or devotional content is not automatically free to rebroadcast.
- Choose the sequence and repeat behavior. Arrange tracks in the intended order and configure VLC’s playlist repeat/loop behavior for your desired sequence. Test the ending-to-beginning transition and track-to-track gaps before the event.
- Keep output open across tracks if configuring VLC stream output. VLC’s documented example uses multiple playlist inputs with
sout-keepso the output remains open when one file ends and another begins. That is a continuity feature for the illustrated VLC workflow, not a YouTube connection recipe. - Check your local output first. Play the playlist from start to finish through at least one transition. Confirm sound, video, orientation, and levels; a playlist that loops locally does not demonstrate that a separate encoder or internet feed will remain connected.
Create the YouTube event and protect its stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create an event or schedule it, then use the stream settings YouTube displays for that event.
- Copy the current Stream URL and Stream key into the matching fields in your compatible encoder. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it, include it in a public screenshot, or expose it in a public command or configuration. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room stream settings.
Exact YouTube Studio labels and prompts can change. Follow the event’s current Live Control Room instructions and use the credentials displayed for that event, not a key copied from an old setup.

Make sure the encoder feed matches YouTube’s requirements
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension of RTMP, for encoder connections. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum recommended interval of four seconds. Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so there is no single bitrate to prescribe for every mostly static kirtan stream. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and set values supported by your encoder and chosen video format.

The available official VLC documentation does not verify a particular VLC version, operating system, module, output configuration, or bridge that will deliver YouTube’s required protocol and settings. If your VLC build cannot produce a compatible feed, use an encoder that supports YouTube’s protocol and can accept VLC’s output. Verify the complete signal path on the actual machine rather than assuming playlist playback alone is enough.
Test the broadcast and go live
- Start the encoder feed well before the event. YouTube suggests starting at least 15 minutes before a scheduled stream so you can check the setup; see YouTube live streaming tips.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the preview and check that both picture and audio are present. Listen for clipping, silence, unexpected track gaps, or an abrupt loop boundary.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and resolve any warnings before the audience arrives. Monitor the encoder, computer, network, VLC playlist, and YouTube event during the broadcast; each is a possible point of interruption.
- For a scheduled event, follow Live Control Room’s prompts and click Go live when the preview is ready. Starting the encoder feed does not necessarily start the scheduled event for viewers.
- At the end, stop the encoder feed and end the event using YouTube’s instructions. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not establish automatic archiving for streams of 12 hours or longer.
Keep the stream continuous: what can fail
There are separate links in the chain: VLC must keep playing the media, the encoder must maintain a compatible output, the computer and network must stay available, and YouTube must continue receiving the feed. An uninterrupted VLC playlist alone cannot guarantee an uninterrupted public livestream. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring because reliability depends on the configured encoder, computer, connection, and source behavior.

- A song ends and the feed drops: check playlist transitions and whether the encoder output stays open across files. VLC’s
sout-keepexample addresses output continuity in its documented workflow, but not YouTube ingestion. - YouTube shows no preview: check the event’s current stream URL and key, encoder connection status, and whether the encoder uses a protocol YouTube accepts, especially RTMPS.
- Preview appears but audio or video is wrong: test the actual source playlist and verify the selected codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s guidance.
- The stream becomes unstable: inspect encoder health, computer load, network stability, and YouTube stream-health warnings; do not assume a looping playlist prevents connection failures.
- The key may be exposed: reset it in Live Control Room, then update the encoder with the replacement key.
