Download the video or make it available offline, then use encoder software such as OBS to send it to YouTube. YouTube Studio supplies the stream URL and key the encoder needs; a Drive sharing link is not a substitute.
Before you start
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so check well before the planned broadcast. YouTube’s stated minimum age for live streaming is 16. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements
- You need permission to download or access the VOD, enough local disk space if you download or mirror it, encoder software, and a stable upload connection.
- Decide whether this is a one-off event or an always-on loop. The steps below cover a DIY encoder broadcast; a cloud option appears after them.
Make the Google Drive video available to your encoder
Google Drive’s browser player and sharing links are for viewing. YouTube Live’s encoder workflow instead sends a live feed to YouTube using a stream URL and key. Get the file onto your computer or make it genuinely available offline rather than assuming an encoder can use the Drive link directly. Google Drive video playback information
Option 1: Download a local copy
- Open Drive on the web, select the video, and choose Download. Keep the file somewhere with enough free space for the full recording.
- If Download is unavailable, the owner may have disabled downloads for viewers or commenters. Ask the owner for permission or a downloadable copy. Google Drive download instructions
- Wait for the download to finish and confirm that the file opens locally before setting up the broadcast.
Option 2: Use Drive for desktop
Drive for desktop can stream files while online or mirror them to the computer. Streaming uses less local storage, but depends on internet access and file availability during playback. Mirroring stores a local copy and uses disk space. Set up the YouTube Live event and encoder
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule it for later. Follow the encoder setup flow. YouTube’s encoder workflow
- Copy the connection details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not share or publish it.
- Add the VOD as a media source. In OBS or another encoder, add the downloaded or offline-available video file as a media source. OBS’s interface can change between versions; look for the option to add a media source and select the local file. Set playback to loop only if you intend the recording to repeat.
- Choose a supported output. YouTube recommends RTMPS for general live streaming. Use H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video with RTMP/RTMPS; set constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of two seconds (and no more than four seconds), and a frame rate up to 60 fps. Match the output resolution and frame rate to the VOD where practical, and choose a bitrate that your upload connection can sustain. - Check preview and audio. Start sending the feed from the encoder, then wait for YouTube’s preview. Confirm the picture, audio levels, and motion look right before starting the public event.
- Start the event and monitor it. In Live Control Room, use the available go-live control for your setup. Watch stream health during the broadcast and check for dropped frames or warnings.
Test upload capacity before the broadcast
Use your actual outbound upload capacity, not the download-speed figure from a speed test. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% bandwidth headroom and testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream. A gaming recording with fast motion and sound is a better test than a static screen. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate reliably, lower the output bitrate or resolution and test again. YouTube streaming tips

End the stream and protect the recording
End the event in YouTube Studio and stop the encoder when the broadcast is finished. YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. If the VOD matters, keep the original Drive file or a separate local recording as your backup rather than relying on the YouTube archive alone. YouTube’s encoder and archiving guidance
Fix common problems
There is no Download option in Drive
The file owner may have disabled downloads for people with viewer or commenter access. Request suitable access or ask for a downloadable copy.

A Drive video plays in the browser, but the encoder cannot load it
Browser playback does not establish that the sharing URL is a live encoder source. Download the VOD or make it available offline, then select the local file in the encoder’s media-source settings.
The Drive download fails
Google says browser third-party-cookie settings or extensions can interfere with downloads. A high recent volume of views or downloads can also trigger a temporary restriction that typically resets within 24 hours. Try the relevant browser settings or wait before retrying. The stream drops frames or shows poor health
Check outbound upload bandwidth, leave headroom, and lower bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the current output. Test the same video, audio, and motion in advance; do not wait until the event is public to discover a capacity problem.
The stream ended but there is no archive
Check the event duration. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local copy or recording when you need a reliable archive.

Should you use HLS instead of RTMPS?
For a typical gaming VOD restream, use the encoder’s ordinary YouTube/RTMPS setup. YouTube also documents HLS for particular codec or HDR requirements; OBS is listed among encoders that support HLS output. HLS sends segments and has higher latency, so it is not the default choice unless you have a specific reason to use it. YouTube HLS setup guidance
