How to Stream a Single Gaming VOD on Repeat to YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To repeat one recorded gaming VOD as a YouTube Live broadcast, add the video to an OBS Studio scene as a Media Source, enable Loop, connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream, and start streaming. Your computer and internet connection must remain on while OBS is broadcasting. Check your channel’s live-stream eligibility and the VOD’s content rights before you begin.

Before you set up the stream

Check that your channel can go live

YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days; users must also be at least 16 to live stream. Confirm your channel’s current eligibility in YouTube Studio before preparing the broadcast, since Studio labels and requirements can change. YouTube: Get started with live streaming.

Confirm rights to everything in the VOD

Review the full recording, not just the gameplay: rights concerns can include the game footage, soundtrack, licensed music, overlays, and other material. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. If a match is detected, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you; continued use can lead to temporary interruption or termination. A license alone may not prevent an interruption: YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams.

Set up a single-file loop in OBS

  1. Create a scene: Open OBS Studio and add or select a scene for the VOD broadcast.
  2. Add the recording: In the Sources panel, select + > Media Source, name the source, and choose the local video file. OBS documents support for local formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. If the video does not appear as expected, check that the file is readable and that the selected source points to the correct location. OBS: Media Sources.
  3. Enable the repeat: In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. This makes the file play again when playback completes. Restart playback when source becomes active is a different option: it restarts playback when the source becomes active or visible, but it does not replace the Loop setting for continuous repeats.
  4. Check the scene: Confirm the video is visible in the OBS preview and that its audio is set as intended. Do a short local check before going live so you can catch a wrong file, missing picture, or unexpected audio.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Set up an encoder stream: In YouTube Studio, create or open a live stream and choose the encoder-based setup. YouTube describes encoders as a common method for gaming and other streams. Follow the current Studio prompts to access the stream details. YouTube: Get started with live streaming.
  2. Copy the stream details into OBS: Use the stream key and connection details provided by YouTube in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a recording, or share it with someone who should not control your broadcast.
  3. Start and verify: Start streaming from OBS, then check YouTube’s live preview and status in Studio. Confirm the picture and audio are right before sharing the event with viewers.
  4. Monitor the broadcast: Keep an eye on OBS and YouTube Studio, especially if the stream is meant to run unattended. The documented workflow does not establish a guaranteed uptime or a universal long-duration configuration.

What to expect from a single VOD loop

For one local recording, an OBS Media Source with Loop is the direct setup. OBS also documents a VLC Video source for playlists, but a playlist is unnecessary when you want to repeat only one file. YouTube’s API documentation uses liveStream for the incoming feed and delivery settings and liveBroadcast for the viewer-facing broadcast; most creators can use Studio’s encoder setup without working with the API. With this local method, OBS sends the encoder feed from your computer, so the computer must stay powered on and connected to the internet for the broadcast to continue. The cited setup guidance does not establish a single required bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, upload speed, or PC specification for every VOD and connection. Use the current settings and status guidance shown in YouTube Studio and OBS for your setup rather than assuming one value will suit all systems.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

  • The VOD plays once and stops: Reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled. Restart playback when source becomes active is not the same setting.
  • The wrong video plays or nothing appears: Check the Media Source’s selected file and confirm the file is locally accessible and in a supported format. Verify the source is visible in the scene and in the OBS preview.
  • YouTube does not show the expected feed: Check that OBS is using the stream details for the intended YouTube live stream, then review the live preview and status in Studio. Interface labels may change, so follow the current encoder setup prompts.
  • The live stream is interrupted after a content warning: Review the VOD for third-party material and resolve rights issues before restarting. If you have permission to use the content, contact the rights holder about whether your channel needs to be added to its Content ID allowlist.
  • The broadcast stops when you leave: OBS is running the local-file workflow on your computer; if the computer or its connection goes offline, that setup cannot keep sending its feed. Monitor the computer and stream when continuity matters.
