To send OBS Studio to Wowza over RTMP, get the ingest details from the specific Wowza destination, enter them in OBS Studio > Settings > Stream using the custom-server option, then start the stream and verify reception in Wowza. The exact server URL, port, application, stream name, and credentials depend on whether you use hosted Wowza Video or your own Wowza Streaming Engine; do not substitute values from another account or product.
First identify which Wowza product you are using
Wowza Video is a hosted service. Wowza Streaming Engine is media-server software installed and managed in your environment. Both can receive an OBS stream, but their connection details and verification screens differ.

Connection values are specific to the live stream or application and may differ from examples in setup guides. Wowza Video’s documented RTMP URL is assembled from its primary ingest server, port, and assigned application; the stream name/key and source credentials are separate values. Use the values displayed for your destination.
Prepare the Wowza destination
Wowza Video
- In Wowza Video, create or select a live stream configured to use an RTMP encoder as its source.
- Open that stream’s Overview page and note its source server/URL, port, application, stream name or key, and source username and password.
- Keep those values private. Do not expose credentials in a screenshot, public post, or shared example.
Wowza Video accepts RTMPS on port 443 if the encoder can send it. Use the protocol and port supplied or supported for your stream rather than assuming every account has the same endpoint.

Wowza Streaming Engine
- In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, create or select the live application that will receive OBS.
- Open the application’s Application Connection Settings and note the server, port, application, stream name, and any source login details.
- Check whether source authentication is enabled. Wowza Streaming Engine requires RTMP/RTSP source authentication by default; a connection login is unnecessary only if the application has been configured not to require it.
TCP port 1935 is Wowza Streaming Engine’s default streaming port, not a guarantee that a particular deployment uses it. A firewall, network policy, or non-default configuration may require different handling.
Enter the connection details in OBS Studio
- Open OBS Studio and go to
Settings > Stream. - Choose the custom service/server option. OBS supports a custom streaming server URL and stream key, so a dedicated Wowza preset is not required.
- Enter the Wowza-provided server URL in the server field and the assigned stream name/key in the stream key field. Match the values to the correct product and destination.
- If the Wowza connection information supplies source username and password fields, enter those credentials in the fields provided by the Wowza workflow or encoder connection method. Do not append or embed secrets in a URL unless the product specifically instructs you to do so.
- Apply the settings and close the dialog. Before going live, check the endpoint, port, application, and stream name against the values shown by Wowza.
Wowza Video’s source username and password are separate connection values. For Streaming Engine, whether credentials are needed depends on the application’s source-authentication configuration. Never use credentials from a different stream or application.

Set output quality for your actual workflow
OBS lets you configure video and audio bitrate in its output settings and resolution and frame rate under Settings > Video. Choose a profile that fits your available upload capacity and the limits of the specific Wowza destination and downstream workflow. The connection instructions do not establish one universal bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or codec for every Wowza account, so avoid copying a supposedly universal profile without checking your requirements.
- Set video bitrate with your sustained upload speed and the receiving workflow’s limits in mind.
- Select a resolution and frame rate your system can produce reliably and your destination can accept.
- Check audio output as well as video; a connection can be established without proving that the received audio is usable.
- Run a short test under realistic network and scene conditions before an important broadcast.
If multichannel audio is part of your setup, OBS documentation lists Wowza among servers tested for RTMP multichannel audio ingestion. In the documented server-side recording context, only the first two channels are retained; confirm the behavior relevant to your own workflow before relying on surround audio.

Start OBS and confirm the stream at Wowza
- For Wowza Video, start the live stream in Wowza as directed for that destination.
- In OBS, start streaming.
- Return to Wowza and confirm the incoming picture in the stream’s preview and inspect its metrics. Do not treat OBS showing that it started as proof that Wowza received a usable stream.
- For Streaming Engine, inspect the live source/application status in Manager and confirm the stream is listed.
- Keep the test running for a few minutes and check both audio and video before using the setup for an event.
Troubleshooting OBS-to-Wowza RTMP connections
OBS fails immediately or appears to connect to the wrong destination
Compare the full server, port, application, and stream name with the settings for the exact Wowza product in use. Wowza Video and Streaming Engine endpoints are not interchangeable. Correct any stale or copied values, then try again.
Wowza reports an authentication error
For Wowza Video, recheck the source username and password displayed for that live stream. For Streaming Engine, verify both the supplied credentials and whether the application requires source authentication. Do not disable authentication merely to bypass an error unless that change is appropriate for the application’s security configuration.

The connection stalls or a network blocks it
Confirm the configured port and ask the network or system administrator to check relevant firewall rules. TCP 1935 is the Streaming Engine default; Wowza Video documents RTMPS on port 443 for encoders that support it. A port change is not a universal fix: use a protocol and port supported by the destination and permitted by the network.

Wowza connects but receives no usable audio or video
Check OBS output configuration, including video and audio settings, and compare it with the requirements for the destination and workflow. Run a short test and inspect Wowza’s preview or source status. There is no single profile established for every account, so a connection alone does not confirm compatible media output.
