Use ElevenLabs’ official Node.js SDK and its textToSpeech.stream() method to receive generated speech incrementally, rather than waiting for a complete audio file. This is the right approach when the text is ready up front and your app needs to start handling audio as soon as chunks arrive.
Stream speech with the official Node.js SDK
Install ElevenLabs’ official JavaScript package:

Adapt the stream to a Node.js Readable
If a downstream helper expects a Node.js Readable, wrap the SDK stream with Readable.from():

Pick the interface according to when your text becomes available and whether you need early audio:

For the SDK’s documented Node.js streaming pattern, see the ElevenLabs streaming API reference. ElevenLabs describes streaming HTTP responses as raw audio bytes delivered using chunked transfer encoding, so a client can process or play audio incrementally.

Call the streaming endpoint directly over HTTP
If you do not want to use the SDK, send a POST request to https://api.elevenlabs.io/v1/text-to-speech/:voice_id/stream, replacing :voice_id with the selected voice ID. The request requires text; model_id is optional and defaults to eleven_multilingual_v2 in the endpoint reference. The response is streaming audio data.

Review the streaming endpoint reference for the current request schema and optional parameters. The reference documents controls such as voice settings, language code, pronunciation dictionary locators, seed, previous or next text or request IDs for continuity, and text normalization options. It notes that language code is not supported for eleven_multilingual_v2.

Choose an output format for the playback target
The endpoint’s documented default format is mp3_44100_128. Format names specify codec, sample rate, and bitrate. Select a format your playback or processing destination supports, and check account eligibility before requesting higher-tier formats.

Set expectations for latency and privacy options
ElevenLabs’ latency guide reports approximately 75 ms inference speed for Flash models. That figure covers model inference only, not the full delay from your application’s request to playable audio. Location, network conditions, and endpoint type affect end-to-end latency; the number is not a promised response time.

The endpoint reference also documents enable_logging=false for zero-retention mode, limited to enterprise customers. In that mode, history features—including request stitching—are unavailable. Check the current streaming guide and endpoint documentation when those controls matter to your application.
