You can use FFmpeg to send a church sermon feed or prerecorded sermon to YouTube Live, but FFmpeg alone does not make a stream reliably run forever. The basic path is media source → FFmpeg on a host that stays available → YouTube ingest → viewers. For a continuous stream, you also need to monitor the session and plan for interruptions, restarts, and YouTube’s current live-stream limits.
This guide covers the YouTube encoder workflow. It distinguishes a live camera or mixer feed from a prerecorded sermon loop because they require different input setups. There is no single FFmpeg command that is safe to copy for every source and ingest protocol.
Choose the source before configuring FFmpeg
First decide what “24/7” means for your church channel. FFmpeg can read media, apply filters or transcode it, and write to an output format or streaming protocol. The right input depends on whether you are sending a live service or replaying recordings. See the FFmpeg documentation and formats documentation.
Live camera or mixer feed
For a live service, FFmpeg must receive the camera or production mixer’s video and audio. That generally means capturing from the hardware or software output available on your streaming computer and routing the intended audio into the same production path. A prerecorded-file loop is not the right input model for a live feed.

Church streaming setup guidance identifies cameras, microphones, a streaming computer, and reliable internet as common setup considerations; it does not establish a minimum computer specification or bandwidth requirement. Your camera, audio system, capture method, and operating system determine the FFmpeg input configuration. See StreamingChurch.tv’s church live-streaming documentation.
Prerecorded sermon or playlist
For a replay channel, the input is one sermon file or an ordered collection of recordings. FFmpeg’s input and format options include looping-related functionality, but a loop is not automatically a complete 24/7 system. File endings, timestamps, audio/video synchronization, and whether the output remains compatible with YouTube depend on the media and command you configure.

For a sequence of sermons, decide how the next item is selected and what should happen if a file is missing or unreadable. Test transitions and audio levels before leaving the process unattended. FFmpeg documentation explains available options; it does not provide one universally reliable church-sermon playlist command.
Create and configure the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select a stream. YouTube’s encoder workflow provides a stream server URL and stream key for connecting an encoder. Follow the current on-screen setup flow in YouTube’s “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder” guide.
- Choose the ingest protocol and confirm its requirements. The server URL and key must be used with a compatible output from FFmpeg. RTMP and HLS are not interchangeable command-line settings; use the protocol and endpoint YouTube provides for the selected workflow.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, include it in a public script or screenshot, or send it to people who do not operate the stream. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s controls before continuing.
- Configure FFmpeg for the actual source and endpoint. Select the input capture or file, codecs and container/output format that match the ingest protocol, then provide the current YouTube server URL and key. The exact command depends on those choices; the available documentation does not establish a tested, ready-to-copy command, encoding preset, minimum CPU, or minimum upload speed for every setup.
- Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s preview. Confirm that both picture and sound arrive as expected in Live Control Room before making the stream public or leaving it unattended. YouTube’s instructions describe connecting the encoder and starting content; use its current controls to manage the stream.
RTMP versus HLS ingest
Use the protocol YouTube’s stream setup specifies and match FFmpeg’s output accordingly. HLS is a particular case: YouTube says it has higher latency because video is delivered in segments. Its Help page specifies TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and supported codecs. Google’s developer guide adds requirements including muxed M2TS media, supported H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, and a closed GOP. Check the current documentation before configuring HLS because protocol constraints can affect the output format and encoder settings.

Do not assume an RTMP-oriented FFmpeg output will satisfy HLS requirements, or that settings for one source file will suit a camera feed. Validate the selected ingest protocol, codecs, segment or keyframe requirements, and current endpoint instructions against YouTube’s documentation.
Keep a 24/7 stream available
A successful connection is only the start. A continuous channel needs a host that remains powered and connected, a process that can be observed, and an operator plan for failures. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archival note does not establish that a single live session can remain active indefinitely. Build your operating plan around the possibility that a session ends or needs to be restarted, and verify current YouTube live-stream rules.

Monitoring and recovery checklist
- Check Live Control Room for the incoming preview and stream status, rather than relying only on the FFmpeg process appearing to run.
- Watch for a stopped process, loss of input, network interruption, or a session that has ended. Decide who is responsible for checking alerts and restarting the encoder and, when necessary, the YouTube session.
- Test the restart procedure while an operator is available. Confirm that it reconnects with the current server URL and key and that the source resumes in the intended state.
- Keep the streaming host, source files, and network equipment in a location and configuration suitable for sustained operation. A power loss, software update, or internet outage can interrupt the chain.
- Limit access to stream credentials and document how authorized volunteers can retrieve or rotate them without putting the key in public-facing materials.
These are operational recommendations, not a guarantee of uptime. The cited FFmpeg and YouTube materials explain media handling and the encoder workflow; they do not promise that a particular computer, command, or single YouTube session will remain live indefinitely.

Before looping recordings, check that your church has permission for every element in the video and audio, including music, lyrics, backing tracks, photographs, and clips that may have been licensed only for an in-person service or a limited-use stream. A recording made by the church does not by itself establish rights to third-party material in it. Review YouTube’s current policies and any applicable licenses before putting a replay channel on air. Do not treat an FFmpeg command or a successful preview as evidence that content is cleared.

Also decide whether a continuous replay is appropriate for your congregation and channel. Label prerecorded material clearly in the stream title or description where relevant, and ensure the schedule, sermon context, and any pastoral information remain accurate when the video repeats.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded sermons looping on YouTube without leaving a church computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed. The stream runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home or at church; each slot handles the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See plans and details.
