You can stream archived game jam VODs continuously by playing the files through an encoder and sending that feed to YouTube Live. Create or schedule a live event in YouTube Studio, connect the encoder with the event’s stream URL and key, and configure the playback software to repeat your archive or playlist. YouTube’s setup guides explain the encoder connection; the repeat-playback and restart settings depend on the software you choose.
Before you start: check channel eligibility and VOD rights
Confirm that the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16. Check the channel’s eligibility before building an unattended setup; see YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.

Get permission for everything in the VOD
You need the necessary rights for all material in the broadcast, including music. A game jam recording may contain game audio, music, participant contributions, or other third-party material, so confirm that the rights cover YouTube live use. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A Content ID claim can also appear on an archived live stream after it ends. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and guidance on copyright issues with live streams. If appropriate, ask rights holders about allowlisting the channel in Content ID.

Choose a playback and encoding setup
You need software or hardware that plays your VOD files and sends the resulting feed to YouTube Live. YouTube supports encoder-based streaming and describes software encoders as an option for gameplay and overlays; hardware encoders are another option, not a requirement for this workflow. Choose based on your ability to repeat a playlist, recover playback after an interruption, monitor the feed, and record a local backup. YouTube’s guides do not prescribe a particular file-loop or automatic-restart setting, so check the documentation for the playback and encoder software you select.

Create the YouTube Live event and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one. Scheduling gives you a shareable event page and lets viewers set reminders. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Get the stream URL and key. Enter the URL and stream key from the event into your encoder’s streaming destination settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
- Set up VOD playback. Add the archived recordings to the playback software, arrange the playlist, and enable its repeat or loop behavior if available. Confirm how the software handles the end of a file, the end of the playlist, and a playback error; the exact controls vary by application.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Confirm that YouTube receives both picture and sound, check that the intended event is accessible, and verify that playback continues into the next file or repeats as intended before you make the event public or leave it unattended.
- Monitor the live feed and keep a local recording. YouTube recommends checking the stream and recording a local archive as a backup. See its computer live-streaming tips.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous channel therefore should not rely on one indefinite broadcast to produce a complete YouTube archive. Plan deliberate sessions shorter than 12 hours when an automatic archive matters, and retain local recordings for material you need to preserve. Check YouTube’s archive guidance for the current details.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not receive a feed: Confirm that the encoder is using the stream URL and key for the correct event, and that the channel remains eligible to live stream.
- The event receives video but no sound: Check the playback file’s audio and the encoder’s audio input or routing, then verify sound in the YouTube preview before relying on the broadcast.
- The VOD stops instead of repeating: Review the playback software’s playlist repeat or loop behavior, including what happens at the end of the final item. YouTube’s encoder setup does not configure file looping for you.
- The broadcast stops after a rights match: Review the affected content and resolve permissions with the relevant rights holder. For future streams, confirm YouTube live-use rights and any relevant Content ID allowlisting before going live.
- The stream ends but no complete YouTube archive appears: Check the broadcast duration. Streams over 12 hours may not be captured, so use planned sessions under that threshold and make a local recording.
Or let it run in the cloud
For archived videos and playlists that you want to keep live on YouTube without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera.
