That avoids building the entire JSON text and parsed object tree in application memory—but it does not guarantee a fixed memory ceiling or make every 1GB file feasible on every device. The practical goal is bounded, incremental processing with explicit cleanup, not a promise that a particular file size will always work.
What streaming changes—and what it does not
The browser Streams API is designed for data created, processed, and consumed incrementally; a File is a Blob, and Blob.stream() exposes its contents as a readable stream of chunks. That lets the application avoid first turning a large file into one complete string. The WHATWG Streams Standard describes the model as processing data “without ever reading all of it into memory.” MDN: Streams API · MDN: Blob.stream() · WHATWG Streams Standard

Streaming is not a guarantee that every part of the conversion uses constant memory. A parser can still retain every parsed record, an output queue can grow faster than the destination can consume it, and one exceptionally large record or field can itself require substantial memory. A 1GB file is a challenge to design for, not a universal browser safety threshold: the cited platform documentation establishes no generally safe maximum file size, memory multiplier, or conversion speed.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose the JSON shape and flattening rules first
A parser must know what unit it should emit. Common inputs include a top-level array of records, a single JSON object, or JSON Lines, where each line contains a separate JSON value. A parser that handles one shape should not be assumed to handle the others. Pick a parser or tokenizer that supports the actual input format and can emit records or selected values incrementally, rather than constructing the complete document tree.

Before converting, define how nested data maps to columns. For example, a policy might map customer.name to a column named customer.name, leave a missing value blank, and serialize an array as JSON text within one cell. Another policy might expand array elements into separate rows. These choices affect the meaning and shape of the CSV; there is no universal flattening rule imposed by browser APIs.
- Paths: Choose a consistent name for each nested field, including how to distinguish literal dots in keys from separators in paths.
- Arrays: Decide whether to serialize them inside a cell, select particular elements, or expand them into multiple rows. Row expansion can change record counts and relationships.
- Missing and changing fields: Decide what a missing field becomes, and how to handle records with fields not present in earlier records.
- Column order: Fix the header order in advance, discover a schema in a separate pass if rereading is acceptable, or define an explicit policy for fields that appear late.
If the file cannot be reread and new columns may appear after output begins, a header written at the start cannot include those columns unless the schema is already known. Plan for that constraint rather than silently dropping late fields or producing rows that do not match the header.

Build a bounded pipeline
A useful design is File.stream() → incremental decoding → a streaming parser → record-by-record flattening and CSV serialization → awaited writes to the destination. Each stage should pass data onward without accumulating prior records. The Streams API provides the incremental processing model and flow control; the application still has to avoid unbounded queues and retained arrays. MDN: Streams API · MDN: Blob.stream()

- Get a local file. Let the user select it through a file input or picker, then use the resulting
Fileas the stream source. For the large-file path, do not call a full-file text conversion and retain its result. - Decode across byte boundaries. Use a streaming decoder, not an assumption that each byte chunk ends at a character boundary. A multibyte character may be split between chunks, so the decoder must preserve partial decoding state.
- Parse incrementally. Use a tokenizer or streaming parser that can preserve state across chunks and emit the required records or selected values. It must handle JSON quoting, escapes, nested structures, and values split across chunks without building a complete object tree.
- Flatten one record at a time. Keep only the current record or selected fields needed for its output, along with bounded parser state and any bounded output buffer. Do not append completed records to an array.
- Serialize each row and await its write. Write a row or a deliberately bounded batch, then wait for that write before producing more output. This lets downstream flow control slow the producer instead of allowing an unlimited queue to accumulate.
- Release resources on every exit path. Handle parse errors, cancellation, write failures, and user permission denial. Close the destination on successful completion; on failure, abort where supported, release reader or writer locks, and clear references to buffers and previews.
Cloudflare demonstrates a Web Streams parser pattern using @streamparser/json-whatwg in a Worker. That example illustrates incremental parsing; it is not evidence of a browser-local 1GB conversion benchmark or proof that the package suits every JSON shape. Select a parser by its format support, event or path selection, behavior with large tokens and deep nesting, worker compatibility, error reporting, maintenance, and bundle size. Write CSV correctly without buffering the whole result
CSV serialization is separate from JSON flattening. For each cell, quote it if it contains a comma, a quote, or a line break; double any quote characters inside the quoted value. Use one consistent line-ending convention. RFC 4180 is a useful compatibility reference, but document any dialect choices your application makes. RFC 4180: Common Format and MIME Type for Comma-Separated Values (CSV) Files
Write the header once when the column schema is fixed, then serialize and write each row as it is produced. Await each destination write—or each small, bounded batch—before requesting more records. If parsing runs ahead while output is slow and the application keeps enqueuing chunks, memory can still grow even though the parser is streaming.

Keep buffers bounded by design. Avoid collecting rows for a large preview, joining all CSV strings into one final string, or retaining output chunks for a later download. Consider the size of individual records as well as the number of records: a huge field, unusually deep nesting, a very wide schema, or heavy quote escaping can cause memory spikes within an otherwise incremental pipeline.
Save through a file stream when available
Where the browser supports it and the user grants permission, a file picker followed by FileSystemFileHandle.createWritable() gives the application a writable file stream. Await its writes and close it after successful completion; closing commits the changes. This API requires a secure context, and browser support and permission behavior vary, so feature-detect it and verify the browsers you intend to support. For example, the core output sequence for a picker-selected handle is:
const handle = await window.showSaveFilePicker({ suggestedName: "converted.csv" });
const writable = await handle.createWritable();
try {
await writable.write(headerText);
for await (const rowText of csvRows) {
await writable.write(rowText);
}
await writable.close();
} catch (error) {
await writable.abort(error).catch(() => {});
throw error;
}
This illustrates output ordering and cleanup, not a complete converter: csvRows must come from a parser and flattener that preserve state and do not retain all rows. The actual user interaction, cancellation handling, and error reporting belong in the surrounding application code.
Fallback downloads have a memory trade-off
If a direct file stream is unavailable or the user cannot grant access, a conventional download may be an option, but do not assume it remains bounded if the implementation first collects every output chunk and constructs one final Blob. That approach can retain the complete CSV output. Likewise, Response.blob() consumes a response stream to completion before resolving to a Blob; it is not equivalent to writing each generated CSV chunk directly to disk. MDN: Response.blob()
If you use an object URL for a download, release references when they are no longer needed and revoke the URL after its use ends. The File API specifies that an object-URL mapping keeps its associated Blob from being garbage-collected while the mapping exists. W3C: File API
Use a worker for responsiveness, not as a memory fix
Moving parsing and flattening to a Web Worker can keep heavy processing away from the page’s main thread. MDN documents Streams API availability in workers as well as windows. But a worker does not reduce the data retained by an algorithm: buffering every record or output chunk still consumes memory. Keep the same bounded-state and backpressure design, and arrange cancellation and error reporting between the page and worker. MDN: Streams API · MDN: Blob.stream()
Quick Recap
Test the failure cases before relying on large-file conversion
- Split input at arbitrary byte and text boundaries, including inside multibyte characters, escaped strings, and nested values.
- Test the actual supported JSON shapes and malformed input; confirm that errors identify failure rather than producing a quietly truncated CSV.
- Include missing fields, late-appearing fields, arrays, large individual records, deep nesting, and wide schemas to validate the flattening policy and memory behavior.
- Slow the destination deliberately and confirm that awaited writes prevent an ever-growing output queue.
- Exercise cancellation, denied picker permission, write failure, and parse failure; verify that cleanup runs and the output is not treated as complete.
- Test on the browsers and devices your users actually have. Without a named benchmark specifying machine, browser version, dataset shape, destination, and method, a file-size claim or throughput number is not transferable.
